Daddies and Daughters

Growing up not having a father figure in my life I always wondered what it would be like to have a dad. I’m blessed to now have a relationship with my dad, but definitely missed out on all the fun things dads do with their little girls. Maybe that’s why I’ve been blessed with two beautiful little girls and a husband who adores them.

I love watching DaddyB with the girls, seeing how they talk and play and how he makes them feel special. In our house the girls have Daddy-Daughter adventures where they get to spend the day with DaddyB doing some fun things mixed in with errands, it’s quality time that they treasure.

Another annual event that all three of my favorite people love is the Daddy Daughter dance that our school hosts. I love seeing DaddyB and the girls dress up and enjoy hearing all about their night. Last week they were able to participate in this years’ dance.

{Aren’t they awesome!!!}

They had a great time getting ready. US Angels sent the girls dresses and both of them felt like princesses. The quality of the dresses are outstanding. You can see the details in the stitching and feel it in the material.

As Lil’ C twirled around the room, {feeling like a princess}, she made sure to let us know her skirt had 6 layers.

And Miss A, looked grown up in the best way possible. I couldn’t believe how beautiful she is and how she’s turning into a young lady.

If you’re looking for a dress for a special occasion, like formal dances, holiday pictures, fancy parties, weddings, or confirmations, I would highly recommend checking out US Angels, they have great selections for little ones all the way through teenagers. usangels.com

At the event DaddyB and a photographer took lots of pictures and I can’t wait to see them all once they’re posted. The best thing is how the girls won’t need pictures to remember these special moments with their daddy.

For those of you who have lost your fathers in one way or another, take heart. I pray that you will find someone who will fill that role for you, be able to witness it in your own home as you make your own family, or be able to help others who might be missing out.

I received free product from US Angels, my thoughts and opinions are my own.

How to Keep Your Kids Safe this Halloween

As an ambassador for Rayovac I have been compensated for this blog post. All thoughts and opinions on the products are my own.

Whether your kiddos are trick-or-treating this Halloween, handing out candy, or attending a party you want them to be as safe as they can be right?!?

Here are some tips to help keep your kids safe this Halloween:

1. Have a plan

  • Decide if you’re going as a group (depending on age of your family members) or if the child will be picked up or dropped off.
  • Charge your mobile phones and if you have one, bring your mobile battery power pack.
  • If you’re trick-or-treating plan a route ahead of time and adjust accordingly.

2. Discuss

  • Speak to your children about what to do in a variety of situations. This will help them not only to be aware of what they might experience but also give them ideas on how to handle the situation.

Some ideas include; when they see someone in a scary costume, when a stranger invites them into their home, when other children cut in line, if someone’s porch light is not on.

  • If you have an older child make sure you discuss rules while they are with friends and curfew ahead of time so that they can ask questions and understand the rules before their night out.

3.  Take Safety Precautions

  • Bring a source of light with you. Glow sticks are fun, but flashlights are often better especially in dimly lit areas where children might easily trip.

Rayovac has a great flashlight perfect for Halloween night that combines the power of a flashlight with the fun of a glow stick.

How to Keep your Kids Safe this Halloween

The Glow in the Dark Flashlight, features include:

Super bright 14 LED light
Beam Distance: 59 feet (18.5 meters)
Battery Run Time: 9 hours on Rayovac Heavy Duty batteries (included)*
Glow in the dark rubber grip
Lifetime warranty

And is available for $4.99, however for the month of October, Rayovac has a promotion for $1 off. To get your discount head here: Rayovac.com and enter the Promo Code: GLOWINTHEDARK {you can also get FREE SHIPPING on orders $25+}.

  • Another great way to keep your children safe is to teach them how to be a good pedestrian. Practice during the day and if possible at night as well.
  • Have your child wear a costume that is easily visible by vehicles, if necessary add reflective strips to their costume/clothing to help drivers spot them.

While these are only a few things that you can do to help keep your children safe I’d love to hear some ideas of yours. Please leave a comment here telling me what tips you use to keep your kiddos safe on Halloween or any night.

Shop maurices and Support the American Cancer Society

I received compensation in the form of product and gift cards in return for spreading the word about this great cause and administering and hosting a giveaway on my site.

Are you a conscientious shopper? Are you mindful of where your money is going and do you seek out purchases that have a “greater good” behind them?

Several great brands have programs where profits from sales are donated to a charitable cause, which makes the purchase that much more meaningful. It’s rare, however that you see a retail store donate more than 50% of a product sale going directly to help support as well-known, a non-profit organization as the American Cancer Society. However, that is exactly exactly how women’s fashion retailer, maurices is getting involved this holiday season.

maurices donates to American Cancer Society.png

This 2013 maurices Holiday Necklace includes three fashionable necklaces packaged together and comes in both silver and gold. Retailing for $12, the company will contribute a minimum of $6.00 from the sale price of every necklace to the American Cancer Society to support its mission to finish the fight against cancer by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

This year, through sales of the new Holiday Necklace, the company hopes to raise more than $400,000 helping to make a difference in the lives of those families impacted by cancer.

We all know someone who has been directly affected by cancer and it’s a cause that is extremely important to the maurices family,” said Brad Hartmann SVP, Chief Creative Officer. “Holidays are a time for giving and we are excited to introduce the latest addition to our accessories collection and offer consumers a gift that gives back in a big way.”

For the last nine years, maurices partnership with the American Cancer Society has raised more than $8 million for the organization from combined fundraising efforts within their retail stores through the sales of custom designed jewelry, in-store fundraisers and corporate financial contributions.  Now through January 5, 2014 (or while supplies last), maurices invites consumers to join in the fight against cancer by purchasing the necklace set at one of the more than 875 stores nationwide or online.

maurices is donating one of their beautiful holiday necklaces to a lucky MommyBKnowsBest.com reader. {This would be a great win because wearing the necklace and telling others about the necklace and the donations to American Cancer Society would only increase their efforts to fight cancer.}

Enter here:

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Also be sure to enter my maurices gift card giveaway that’s going on right now as well, if you win, you can buy a few necklaces for friends and family!

This holiday season the goal is to raise $400,000 in addition to their annual $8 million. Please consider purchasing a few of these gorgeous necklaces so you can shop and do some social good at the same time. For more information on maurices charitable efforts or to shop, check out their social channels here:

Although I received compensation for my promotions of this program, all of the opinions stated in the above post are my own honest words and thoughts. All-in-all I think this is a great charitable cause and am thankful to be able to bring this to you.

My Invisalign Treatment Progress and Refinement Plans

*I am a member of the Invisalign Mom Advisory Board, I receive complimentary Invisalign treatment, but am posting my own, personal opinions.

MAB BadgeHey there! I love giving tips and talking about Invisalign, but it’s been a little while since I last updated my personal progress, so this post is dedicated to just that.

I’m sitting here Invisalign-less, no attachments, no aligners, nothing, but I’m not done yet. I know it sounds like a riddle, but basically I have finished my initial set of 51 top and bottom aligners and while I can see MUCH improvement in my smile, there is still some fine tuning that will complete my perfect smile. These adjustments are called refinement.

Let’s go back a little. Here’s my last Invisalign progress post: MommyB’s Invisalign Progress. Since the beginning I have been able to watch my smile transform, and even though I don’t have many crooked teeth, my smile was not filling up my mouth. I have enjoyed watching my smile change and even noticing the differences when I brush and especially when I floss my teeth.

My last few trays focused mainly on correcting the overlap of my bottom front teeth. For as long as I can remember those teeth have crossed over, so to feel a much flatter, smoother surface on the back of those teeth is incredible. While I’m not super excited for refinement {to be completely honest}, I am excited about the end results, those results are what compels me to follow my treatment plan and those results are what will encourage me to keep up my dental care after my treatment is completed.

Back to refinement. If you read one of my earlier Invisalign posts, I mentioned the process of impressions, at the time the only option available at the orthodontist were the “goopy” impressions. They weren’t the worst thing in the world, but having a stuffy nose and getting them done didn’t mix well. I have heard a lot of people mention how they hated the process. Fortunately, I have been able to experience both sides of the coin, and with this refinement, was able to have my impressions taken via Invisalign Technology iTero scanner.

After the orthodontist filed down my attachments, scans were taken to be sent to Invisalign to create my refinement trays. {My actual first impressions from January 2012 on the left and a stock image of the iTero scanner in use.}

Invisalign Impressions MommyB

Here are some differences between the two impression techniques:

  • iTero impressions are cleaner (no goop)
  • iTero takes a few minutes longer
  • iTero has no bad taste
  • iTero gives you opportunities to take a break
  • iTero allows you to rescan in the office right away where the other form of impression may be sent back to the orthodontist and another appointment required
  • iTero technology gives Invisalign a more in-depth look at your teeth and bite

If I had a choice between the two I would probably choose the iTero scan, mostly because of the quality of impression it gives Invisalign but really, I’m not too picky.

And last but not least, here are a few pictures of my teeth before Invisalign and currently, be warned, lots and lots of pictures of teeth coming up…

Invisalign Progress Collage MommyB

For the next 4 months I’ll be Invisalign-less, but am excited to continue to talk to you about the treatment and my personal progress too. Refinements are normal after the initial Invisalign treatment is done, not everyone has refinements, but it’s also not something to freak out about either.

Do you see the progress?? Which impression method would you choose??

My thoughts on Integrated Prom – White Prom, Black Prom

Mom PromAs I prepared for my Mom Prom just last weekend, little did I realize that there were high school students in South Georgia getting ready for their first prom….their first integrated prom that is.

For over 40 years, students at Wilcox County High School, in Rochelle, Ga have been attending a segregated prom. One prom for the white students, and one for the black students were hosted by parents of each race. Parents supported the segregation by planning, paying for and continuing this age-old, hometown tradition. I like to call it “white prom” and “black prom” let’s be honest folks, we need not beat around the bush.

Surprisingly, the school board has avoided the situation all together, basically washing their hands of being either right or wrong and sitting by while the parents took over.

Are the parents to blame? Does this make the school innocent? Who’s really in charge here?

Thankfully, and finally, students at Wilcox County High School, stepped up where their school board administrators, local businesses, and even parents have failed. Standing up out of the ignorance of segregation and fighting for their right to end what is more than an antiquated tradition and clearly racism. Four girls, 2 African American and 2 Caucasian created a Facebook page, asking for support and donations to host their own, independent prom.

Integrated Prom MommyBKnowsBest

“We were doing that so we could get the word out, so that some people would be able to donate and help us out with what we were doing,” said senior Mareshia Rucker.

The night of the prom,  nearly half of the school’s student body were in attendence at Wilcox County High School’s first integrated prom in 2013… unfortunately, they aren’t the only place in our country with this same mindset.

CNN.com reports: “Wilcox County is not the only place with a racially segregated prom, nor is it the only one that’s attracted widespread attention in recent years. In the 2009 documentary “Prom Night in Mississippi,” director Paul Saltzman followed the preparations for the first integrated prom in Charleston, Mississippi. Actor Morgan Freeman, a native of the area, offered in 1997 to cover the cost if the school board would hold an integrated prom, but the offer wasn’t accepted till 2008.”

While this prom was a great success, there were still students and parents in opposition of the prom, and as a result “white prom” was held again this year. We can hope that this nation learns from this story and takes steps in the direction towards racial equality. If nothing else, these intelligent, amazing teenagers have inspired others, made history, and stood up for what they believe in. Who says children can’t teach adults?!?

Check out Integrated Prom’s Facebook page to see some pretty amazing pictures that I wanted to use for this post but didn’t have permission to, and support what they are doing, whether it is with prayers and words of kindness or donations.

What are your thoughts on this issue?? Who do you think is to blame? But even better still, how can WE change this?

Invisalign, Not Just for Crooked Teeth

Are you one of the people who think that Invisalign is only for straightening teeth. I’ve even heard people say, “Yeah, Invisalign can fix crooked teeth, but not really crooked teeth right??” And to that I say, “wrong and wrong”.

When I went to Invisalign Headquarters last year I learned so much about the technology of the Invisalign program and products that even some of my own misconceptions were dispelled.

I thought to myself, “sure I have a few crooked teeth and thought Invisalign would be great to correct those issues of my overcrowding as I get older”, but little did I know Invisalign works in many other ways, and I’m living proof.

Did you know that Invisalign works for correcting:

  • Overbite
  • Underbite
  • Crossbite
  • Overcrowding
  • Openbite
  • Spacing Issues
  • General Straightening

Again, for me, I knew I had a few crooked teeth that could use some adjusting, but I didn’t realize my smile wasn’t as full as it could have been, and is now becoming due to my use of the Invisalign system. In my progress picture you can see the difference where my back teeth are starting to fill up my smile rather than there being a sinking space. Totally cool right?!?!

I encourage you to take a look in the mirror and consider if you want a healthier smile (straight teeth have health benefits too!!). If you think you may be a good candidate or want to improve your smile, take Invisalign’s free smile assessment: HERE.

Teaching Your Kids Financial Responsibility

Have you considered teaching your children about financial responsibility? Maybe you’re trying to find out ways to instill monetary value, and work ethics into your children. In this day-in-age it can be hard to remind kids the value of a dollar, especially with magic credit cards and online purchases.

I’ll admit, our girls are pretty young, but that doesn’t thwart our efforts to prepare our girls for the age where they’ll be receiving a regular allowance and teaching them how to make frugal choices.

At age 2 and 5, 10 cents to them is like a “katrillion bejizzlon dollars”. I know a large number of you, my readers, have children who are a little older as well, or may be getting into the “allowance-stage” of childhood.

VirtualPiggy_125x125One of the newest, coolest, online ways to teach your children how to be financially responsible is Virtual Piggy.

As you help your child set up their Virtual Piggy profile, you have the opportunity to discuss internet safety, money management, and making wise choices. Your child will be super excited that the can, in a sense, take the reigns of their spending, while you control their boundaries and protect their identity.

Children can make purchases at family-friendly, Virtual Piggy approved merchant websites, and purchase gift cards to major brands through Virtual Piggy’s online store. {Virtual Piggy is signing new merchants every week.}

Now through January 15th Virtual Piggy is offering special promotions through their Member Value Program. http://bit.ly/MVPiggy” target=”_blank”>www.virtualpiggy.com/mvp.(*some offers will start or end sooner).

What’s your biggest concern when it comes to teaching your child how to be financially responsible?

Young Hollywood’s Secret to Smile Success

Invisalign Teen

I don’t have a tween or a teen in my home, but I’m sure before I know it my little girls will be big girls and be total “teenie boppers” just like their mom was. I do however have the priveledge of knowing some of the teen “idols” of today because I have a 14, soon to be 15 year-old sister, who keeps me somewhat clued in on the hottest things.

Invisalign TeenWhen I heard about the Invisalign Studio program and the fact that many young stars are wearing Invisalign I was very impressed. As a mom and someone wearing Invisalign I know the benefits of Invisalign over traditional braces, but it’s even cooler to see young hollywood and your average teenagers researching and asking about Invisalign too.

Invisalign Studio members include budding 12 year-old film star Bailee Madison,  Jimmy Bennett, who just celebrated his “Rockin’ 16th birthday” with an Invisalign Teen sponsored party at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood, Zendaya Coleman from Disney’s hit television show “Shake It Up,” and Cameron Quisengfrom the band Allstar Weekend.

Take a look at some great videos including a confessional with Jimmy Bennett himself, images of Bailee Madison with her aligners, and more information about Invisalign Teen here:

For an everyday-teen’s perspective I encourage you to check out my friend Lolli’s blog post about her daughter’s experience with Invisalign Teen and see the results yourself:  http://betterinbulk.net/2012/04/invisalign-a-teens-story.html
