PodKeeper’s New and Improved Website and Twitter Party

As a proactive mom I’ve always felt that being scheduled and organized, while allowing for some flexibility has really helped me manage the busy-ness of parenting. As my girls get older, they have more responsibilities and activities that I need to handle and without a way to track it all, I’m often found missing out on an event or forgetting items.

MH900446326

Of course I have several Facebook groups, email threads, group text messages, newsletters, {and the list goes on} for each activity and event, but to be honest, that in itself can be a little overwhelming. I find myself wondering, did I post the thread? did I write that down in my calendar? and racking my brain just as much as if I had no system in place.

When I heard about PodKeeper I was super excited about a website that could handle my groups, events, forums, calendar all in one central location. My excitement drove me to offering social media services to PodKeeper and I currently work with a great brand, that helps me as a parent, and one that’s product I use and love.

Because I heart PodKeeper, I want you to try this free, online website, not for me, but so you can see how the site can revolutionize your definition of organizing your family.

To learn more about PodKeeper, and some great NEW features, I encourage you to join me for our upcoming Twitter Party. Susan from 5minutesformom.com will be joining us as well!

Empowering Girls Through Sports #playlikeagirl

It’s been said that girls who actively participate in sports are healthier of course, but also get higher grades in school, and are more likely to have a better self esteem. While I won’t go as far to say that being involved in athletics will keep your daughter on the straight and narrow for the rest of her life, I will say that I have known young women who are involved in sports and have seen how focused, and guided they are in life. The positive impact that coaches and team mates have on those girls is incredible.

Growing up I was actively involved in community softball, and dance {although I would never label myself as athletic or sporty} and DaddyB played football and was in track and field. We both realize the importance of sports in our girls lives and what it brings beyond health factors.

Even though Miss A and Lil’ C are 3 and 6 years old, we feel it’s important for them to experience a diverse array of sports. From swimming to football, gymnastics and soccer, karate, dance and the list goes on, we don’t hold them back when it comes to trying out sports.

We encourage our little ladies to, “Play Like a Girl”, and even though that phrase, in the past, has carried negative connotations, we’re claiming it, and giving it power. Playing like a girl is awesome! We were made different than boys in lots of ways, and have our own strengths that we bring to the sports we play. I’m all for celebrating our uniqueness and will always be my girls’ biggest fan.

To encourage strength and pride in being an athletic girl, we watch television programming, {especially pre-Olympics and Olympic sports} YouTube videos, and talk about female professional athletes from different sports genres. I love seeing the glimmer our daughters’ eyes as they watch the Williams’ sisters, Yuna Kim, Gabby Douglas, and other awesome girl-powered athletes play. The sense of empowerment that my girls get from seeing strong women rock their sport and being active is invaluable.

Whether our girls are playing in our backyard, participating in sports with friends, or enjoying one of their classes, we’re always proud of their efforts. I think our proudest moments are when our girls conquer their fears and you can see the pride on their faces. Of course I love the moment Miss A learned how to cartwheel and think it’s awesome Lil C can dribble a soccer ball like a champ, but knowing that they both can be empowered through the sports and activities they participate in is what makes our hearts happy.

Verizon FiOS gives your family the connection and speed you need to play with the big boys. Share your proudest moment of your daughter’s athletic achievements at www.verizon.com/playlikeagirl. You could be chosen to win a grand prize valued at $5,000!

Everything you Want to Know About Classes at Little Gym of Huntersville/LKN

Now that you and your child have settled into a great school routine, it’s a perfect time to add in and educational, athletic, extracurricular activity.

You’ve probably heard me talk about The Little Gym of Huntersville/Lake Norman before, and after having two little girls go through various programs, camps, and events that Little Gym offers, I’d like to consider myself a little bit of a mom expert when it hoes to Little Gym. Perhaps that’s one reason I represent The Little Gym of Huntersville/LKN as Mombassador.

Little Gym of HuntersvilleLKN

Today I’ll answer some common questions you may have about The Little Gym of Huntersville/LKN referred to throughout the rest of this post as TLG.

What classes does TLG offer? TLG offers a wide variety of classes including gymnastics, sports, and dance.

What is the age range for classes at TLG? TLG welcomes children ages 4 months through 12 years.

Where is TLG located? TLG Huntersville/LKN is located at exit 23 off Route 77. It is nestled with some great shops right off Gilead Road and close to Presbyterian Huntersville and Earth Fare.

What’s the best way to see if my child likes a class? Sign up for a FREE “Intro” class for the age group that fits your child’s age. Also, if your child has a friend who is currently enrolled, they may join their friend for a “bring a friend” class {as long as they are in the same age group for the class}, please make sure you or the member calls to let TLG know that you’re coming, we love visitors and want to make sure we’re well staffed!

Why should I choose TLG as an activity for my child? TLG teaches children how to be active, have fun, learn life-skills, in a non-competitive, nurturing setting. As a Little Gym mom, I’ve seen my girls learn real skills in their dance and gymnastics classes, make some great friends, learn to respect their teachers, and have seen them grow. I am only speaking for TLG Huntersville/LKN, but the teachers and staff are amazing and are more than people we see twice a week. Instructors take the time to get to know each child individually and on a personal level. That means a lot to me as a mom that my family isn’t only dollar signs to a business.

What is the makeup policy? Unlike many gym and dance programs, TLG offers makeup classes for members who notify TLG in advance, before class begins. Makeup classes must be scheduled in advance to ensure there is the appropriate child to teacher ratio, and do carry over to additional semesters so long as your child is enrolled.

Can I see my child during class? Often programs do not allow you to stay for classes or you must view on a closed-circuit television, however TLG Huntersville/LKN offers you and your child the comfort of being able to see each other during class. For the timid child this gives a sense of security. It also allows for family members to watch your child perform and gives children a sense of accomplishment.

For the non parent-child classes, TLG hosts a couple of parent involvement classes where parents/family are able to join students in their classes and participate.

How much does it cost? Price varies depending on your payment plan, and when you start your child in classes. There is a once a year registration fee per family and parents may sign their children up for Parent Survival Night, camp, or host birthday parties at TLG for an additional fee. However the initial trial class is always FREE!!

How do I sign my child up?

Check out the Programs and Classes schedule HERE, select a time and age group that fits your child’s needs and call TLG directly or sign up via their website for your child’s first class! For any questions TLG is very helpful and knowledgeable about the best options for your family.

Hopefully I’ve been able to not only answer some questions you may have, but also spark your interest in what I think has been one of the most valuable investments our family has made in the development of our children.

Are the Harlem Globetrotters Family Friendly?

My family and I had never been to see the Harlem Globetrotters, not even when I was a little kid, so watching the Harlem Globetrotters show was a first for us all. Before we headed to the show I played some videos for the girls of the Globetrotters in action, you should have seen how wide their eyes were in amazement. They kept asking if we were going to see the,  “basketball guys” every day leading up to last Saturday.

Needless to say we were all very excited. We expected to see lots of cool basketball tricks and silliness that was geared towards families. When we arrived at Time Warner arena the lines were longer than I had seen at a performance/show there. {That was a good sign for us, and luckily it wasn’t too cold outside.}

Here are some shots from the game:

Harlem Globetrotters MommyB Collage

Here are our thoughts as a more conservative family, and please keep in mind our girls are ages 3 and almost 6 years old.

Things that were applause-worthy:

[crosslist]

  • Overall entertainment value
  • Sportsmanship Globetrotters had with their own team
  • Great athletics and skill
  • Silly moments including  fun with Globie and Big G
  • A girl on the court of course!!! {Miss A and Lil C were thrilled to see T-time}
  • Fun interaction with the crowd

[/crosslist]

Things that were cringe-worthy:

[badlist]

  • Some humor was mean-spirited, slightly vulgar
  • Sportsmanship between the opposing team was not there

[/badlist]

Again, we do have smaller kiddos and conservative values, and while there are only two “negatives” on our list, there were several instances of both that we just weren’t comfortable with. For example, there were multiple comments about a referee’s weight {even going to the extent of pulling up his shirt}, a mini bump-n-grind session between Special-K, {the showman/mc} and a woman in the audience at half-court, some name calling mostly of the opposing team.

Personally, I feel like the show could have left jokes that seemed more demeaning or bullying out and been more encouraging and showing children in the audience how to be skilled and win without needing to call names or be cocky. One mom said she felt like the humor was to the tune of Spongebob and we did notice a few other parent’s expressions with some of the jokes/comments that were made.

If people were to ask me if this is a family-friendly show before I had seen it I would say, “of course!!” And I even put it in the title promotional post before the show: Harlem Globetrotters Charlotte – Wholesome Family Entertainment. And now, if people were to ask me I would still say it is family-friendly with some more explanation and disclaimers for age and appropriate-ness. The show did have a lot of redeeming factors and it was fun and overall entertaining, however I would not say it’s currently a, “wholesome show”, which is unfortunate.

The Harlem Globetrotters have such an awesome name recognition and have so much amazing history, not to mention all the charitable causes they do benefit, that if the writers would adjust the show slightly to show more tricks and skill, and keep the fun humor of the Globies, spraying water on the audience, and the fun fan moments the show would be even more attractive to families of all ages and values.

All-in-all though I know families are different and know that parents know their children and families the best, if you are interested in checking the show out for yourself and want to get your tickets to the Harlem Globetrotters “You Write the Rules” tour use the promo code “TOGETHER” to save $7 per ticket*. *Discount available on select ticket levels”

Have you ever been to a Harlem Globetrotters show?? What were your thoughts?

My family and I received complimentary tickets to the Harlem Globetrotters show. This in no way effects my opinion of the show and all thoughts expressed in the above post are mine, my husband’s or those I observed.

Harlem Globetrotters Charlotte – Wholesome Family Entertainment #globiefamily

If you have read any of my other family entertainment posts you know that DaddyB and I are very selective with the entertainment choices we make for our girls. {Who as a reminder are almost 3 and almost 6}. They don’t care for “scary” scenes in movies and are still pretty young. DaddyB and I both remember seeing things from our childhood that have stuck with us now as adults and while we have the chance to enjoy our children’s innocence we are going to do just that. We love having opportunities where they can not only enjoy entertainment, but also learn from it as well.

Family Entertainment

When I think about wholesome family entertainment the Harlem Globetrotters performance definitely comes to mind. The Globetrotters have been an institution since 1926, yes that’s right, more than 85 years! That’s an amazing history, with over 20,000 games. Can you imagine how many families have watched them in that many years??

We want our girls to live and see a healthy, active lifestyle and encourage them by putting them in classes where they can learn physical skill as well as other important life skills, play with them at home, and we also enjoy watching sports on television and explaining rules, training, skill, and everything it takes to put together a game. As the girls grow we want to take them to more sporting events, however we know that some events aren’t so family friendly, which is why we are very excited to take them to the Harlem Globetrotters performance here in Charlotte.

We know the girls will be able to see, first-hand, the fun of sports, the athleticism that the Globetrotters portray, cool displays of skill, and will be able to enjoy it in a wholesome setting where we don’t have to worry about some of the issues we might encounter at a typical sporting event.

If you’re in the Charlotte, North Carolina area come join us, and if not I know there are games all over the country, so check it out and see if there’s a performance coming your way!!

Harlem Globetrotter Banner

The Harlem Globetrotters love seeing families laugh together during our games, and would love to see your family when we come to a city near you.  If you’re looking for an awesome event the whole family will enjoy, get your tickets to the Harlem Globetrotters “You Write the Rules” tour.  Your family’s smiles will start before you even get to the game because this year, your family can vote at harlemglobetrotters.com, and decide rules for the game like two balls in play at the same time that could affect the final outcome. After the game, Globetrotters will stay on court to sign autographs and take photographs with your kids.  The only thing better than finding an event the whole family will enjoy, is getting a great deal on it.  Save $7 per ticket* by using the promo code “TOGETHER“.  Get ready to experience a show your family will remember for a lifetime!  *Discount available on select ticket levels

I received complimentary tickets to the show so I can tell you a little more about my family’s experience. This in no way effects my opinion, good or bad of the Globetrotters. Your opinions of the Harlem Globetrotters and their games may be different.

Football Versus the Ads

I have to admit, as much as I enjoy watching football with hubby, especially the Super Bowl, I have always been most interested in the Super Bowl advertisements. As a Communications major in college I whole-heartedly looked forward to the Super Bowl to scope out which ads would be amazing and which ads just didn’t make the mark.

With that being said, this Sunday was no different. Sure, I was excited to watch the football game {and chose the Ravens for no reason in-particular}, and I was definitely excited to see Alicia Keys sing the National Anthem, loved Jennifer Hudson and the choir from Sandy Hook Elementary {which made me tear up, you too?!?}, and who could forget the amazing Beyonce {and the rest of Destiny’s Child}!?!? But I was in it for the ads.

Superbowl Commercials

Here are my feelings regarding the ads I saw in no particular order: weird, really?!, gross!!!, that’s cool, Paul Rudd, go goats!, seniors are cool, babies {and Babylandia}!!!, animals, NOLA = magic, tears, love when daddies dress up, but the wedding dress…not cool dude, not cool.

Of course I amongst others, {mostly 49ers fans} loved the Miracle Stain ad by Tide. It was hilarious to see the fans flock to Montanaland and buy their, “stain on a stick.” But the star of the commercial was the wife, a Raven’s fan. The ending was the total kicker.

Montanaland

If you happened to miss Tide’s Miracle Stain ad or the Super Bowl as a whole, SHAME ON YOU!!! Just kidding. You can watch it on Youtube by clicking on this link: http://youtu.be/YoOfBVraMNw

Miracle Stain

What do you think??? Do you have a favorite part of the game? Was it the football, the performances, or the ads??

Head to Tide’s Facebook and Twitter to see more messes, spots, and stains and vote on whether you would “Save it!” or “Wash it in Tide!”

The Little Gym – A Family Experience

The Little Gym of Lake Norman/Huntersville

If you’re familiar with my site you’ve seen my posts on The Little Gym, whether I was talking about their core values, birthday parties, or reasons why both kids and parents alike love The Little Gym, and if you’re new to the site then, “Welcome!!!”

The Little Gym of Lake Norman/Huntersville

I am a HUGE supporter of The Little Gym (TLG), not only because the owners, Mr. Pete, and Mrs. Kim are such an amazing duo, not only because the staff at TLG has been extremely friendly, not only because my daughters get to learn the value of teamwork, being healthy, and listening to an adult, not only because they learn actual dance, sports, and gymnastic skills, but because The Little Gym is, in it’s entirety, a family experience.

The Little Gym Family

Each individual member of our family benefits from classes at TLG. My daughters get to enjoy their class and learn many skills, I get to know that I am providing a safe, fun experience for my children to learn {and meet some fun parents in the lobby}, and my husband is able to watch his girls excitement as they practice and show him moves at home and in their end of season shows. It’s really a sense of accomplishment for the whole family when your children are involved in something like The Little Gym. The Little Gym encourages parents to sit and watch our children, and gives us tips on what to work on at home and how to encourage our children, that’s definitely very unique and valuable when it comes to child-centered activities and classes.

Tide & The NFL Present: Show Us Your Colors Sweepstakes

Tide NFL Blog AmbassadorMuch to my delight I was asked to join the ranks of the Tide/NFL Blogger Ambassador Program.

We are a Tide family, and although I don’t blog about sports often, The B family are Dallas Cowboy fans. I became a Cowboys fan by marriage and my daughters even had a pink Cowboys onesie that’s been handed down. So this job is a perfect fit for me, but moreover I know, after posting on my Facebook page and Twitter page about the NFL and household chores that many of you are BIG NFL fans.

This football season Tide has teamed up with the NFL. Take one part grass stains, a dash of mud, and a pinch of sweat, and you’ve got one messy uniform, but with the help of Tide, each of the 32 NFL teams can keep their colors from staining or fading. It’s the perfect union.

Everyone knows that one BIG way NFL fans show our pride is by wearing our team’s colors, and we don’t want our team’s colors to stain or fade either, so what better product, than family-trusted Tide to tackle those messes?!?

To celebrate this passion for team colors, Tide is asking NFL fans everywhere to participate in the “Show Us Your Colors” sweepstakes. The passion NFL fans have for their team’s colors, and the meaning behind them, began in October, 1920 , when the first NFL game was played and fandom began. More than 90 years later, Tide is celebrating this passion by asking fans to visit the brand’s Facebook page or Tide.com to share a photo documenting a time you were most proud to wear your team’s colors.

Check out some of my team color pics:

MommyB Knows Best NFL Collage

You can upload YOUR photos today through November 30th on http://www.facebook.com/Tide/app_174226236047730 for a chance to win an all expenses paid trip for two to Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans, LA. In addition, the team with the most photo uploads will receive a $15,000 donation to their charity from Tide.

Make sure you check on Tide’s Facebook page and Tide.com regularly see how your team stacks up against the competition in real-time, and rally fans of your team for even more support. Show those colors!!!

What are your NFL team colors???

Little Gym of Huntersville/Lake Norman Spotlight

The Little Gym of Lake Norman/Huntersville A few weeks ago I wrote a fun story on why Miss A and I love The Little Gym of Huntersville and Lake Norman. If you haven’t read it, shame on you!
