Diabetes Awareness Month Tips and Savings

This is a sponsored post in partnership with The Motherhood.

Did you know November is Diabetes Awareness Month?? According to the CDC, more than 29 million Americans have diabetes and even more that don’t know they have it. That’s a lot of people! If you aren’t personally affected by diabetes I bet you can think of someone who is.

I’ve seen people living with diabetes all my life.I grew up with a couple of children who had Type 1 diabetes and required an insulin pump and shots. In my own family, my mother had Type 2 diabetes {praise God has not been diabetic for years because of weight loss and healthier living}, and my father-in-law who passed a couple of years ago had diabetes that left him with several diabetes related conditions.

While it’s never something you want to hear that people have to live with, there are ways to modify your diet and supplements/medications that can help manage diabetes.

Protect Your Smile and Enamel Health as You Age

This is a sponsored post on behalf of CVS/pharmacy and Colgate Enamel Health all opinions are my own.

It’s a fact that adult oral care and protecting our enamel is vital for a healthy smile.

There are so many abrasive foods and drinks that wear down our tooth enamel on a daily basis that it’s really important to be mindful of how to maintain our clean, strong smiles.

How to Protect Your Smile and Enamel Health MommyB #healthyteeth #colgatehealthyenamel

As a coffee and soda drinker I love the NEW Colgate Enamel Health toothpaste and toothbrush because together, they help to replenish natural calcium and polish tooth enamel. Healthy enamel doesn’t just look good, it also helps create a smoother surface so germs are less likely to stick as well.

Being an adult undergoing teeth straightening treatment my teeth have also been subject to a lot of wear, so anything I can do to whiten and protect my teeth during and after treatment you can count me in.

It’s easy to shopping for essentials like toothbrushes and toothpaste at my local CVS/pharmacy. With ExtraCare, you’ll earn 2% back on your purchases, {paid out quarterly in the form of ExtraBucks}.

If you’ve been a long-time reader you’ll know I’m someone who loves to write about oral health and saving money, both important things to keep our homes and families healthy and happy.

How to Make Oral Hygiene Fun for Your Family

This is a sponsored post on behalf of The Motherhood.

Have you been following my family’s LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge? Did you post a “Swish Selfie” to help the Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America program?  If not here’s my first post talking about How Your Oral Hygiene Can Help a Charity in Need.

Since we started the challenge of course we’ve been more mindful of our oral health. Though it’s not always fun to clean your teeth we found a few creative ways to get a healthier mouth for the whole family.

Oral Health Fun Must Haves:

• LISTERINE® Antiseptic

• LISTERINE® WHITENING® Original Gel Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste

• REACH® Floss

Oral Health Fun Must Haves #listerine MommyB

Ways to make oral hygiene fun:

  • Wear a dress-up costume and brush “in character”
  • Have a mouthwash contest to see who can gargle the longest
  • Spit mouthwash out missing teeth {Miss A was really good at this}
  • Buy light up or musical toothbrushes {I know they’re more expensive, but way fun!!!}
  • Make a oral hygiene check sheet and give rewards for healthy mouths
  • Sing songs and make brushing fun. {We pretend the girls tongues are breakdancing in their mouths.}

Our mouths feel clean AND silly since we’ve completed the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge. See:

B Family Oral Fun MommyB #listerine

As a mom I noticed my girls breath smelled better, and mine did too, but I also noticed that I felt healthier. I know it sounds weird, but when my teeth are clean and healthy I notice how it effects my overall health. I love challenges that help my entire family be more healthy.

Don’t forget that YOU and YOUR FAMILY can get involved in improving your oral health and helping others by posting a “Swish Selfie” to the LISTERINE® Brand Facebook page and learn more about the challenge.

Do you have any tips for making oral hygiene fun for your family??

I received a Target gift card to purchase LISTERINE® Brand products from Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. and The Motherhood as part of my participation in the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.

How Your Oral Hygiene Can help a Charity in Need

This is a sponsored post in partnership with The Motherhood, however a very important message and cause that was laid on my heart to write about.

I like to think our family takes pretty good care of our teeth, both flossing and brushing, but with our busy schedules brushing time is often rushed. With such a quick brush and not even a thought of a mouthwash or oral antiseptic {for me specifically} and all the coffee and soft drinks I enjoy, I know my teeth aren’t quite as clean as I would like them to be.

Did you know that there are more germs in your mouth than there are people on earth? That’s right – and believe it or not, even if you brush and floss, you’re likely missing millions of them! In fact, brushing alone misses 75% of your mouth, which is why it’s critical to go that extra step to achieve optimal oral health for yourself and your family.

Recently I headed to my second home Super Target to pick up some items for my Listerine challenge. I found that the Listerine brand carries several products that I never knew about {but I’ll save telling you more about those till my next post}. Luckily, my family and I have the opportunity to be able to take great care of our teeth and in turn our overall health. I know calling oral health and opportunity may sound weird, but there are so many children that don’t have a choice when it comes to oral hygiene.

Surprisingly, oral disease has become the most chronic childhood illness in the U.S. Millions are affected, suffering from various forms of oral disease like tooth decay, and experience pain so severe it affects their ability to eat, sleep and learn. It impacts children of all backgrounds, but especially the millions who are unable to afford access to regular professional care that can help treat these conditions.

Smile Across America with #LISTERINE and MommyB

For every person who posts a “Swish Selfie” to Listerine Brand’s Facebook page, Listerine will make a contribution to help Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America program toward their goal of connecting 210,000 children with needed oral health services in 2014.* Through your support we make a difference in oral health for ourselves, our families and children across the U.S.

*$5.00 will be donated per “selfie” up to a grand total of $64,000.

What are your biggest oral health/hygiene struggles??

Ways to Help Children with Canker Sores

Thank you Jack N’ Jill for sending a sample of your product.

Lil’ C is a child who, right before she turned 3 years old, has started to get frequent canker sores. In case you are not familiar with the term, canker sores, are the lesion-type sores inside your mouth that can often cause pain and discomfort, especially during mealtimes.

Canker sores are not contagious, and often the result of genetics. They mostly occur in women in their teens and early 20’s although young children to older adults may get them as well. Diet is also another leading cause of canker sores, some studies say it can signify the lack of enough vitamin B-12 in one’s daily intake.

While we don’t know exactly what is causing our child’s canker sore outbreaks, we do know some things she’s been in contact that contribute to her being more prone to get them, and also the length of time they take to heal. Being a momma, the more I can help her stay comfortable and get less canker sores, the more I am willing to do and research.

Please do keep in mind that I am not a medical professional, only sharing my own personal story with you and recommend before starting any treatment with your own child, whether medical or at home, that you receive approval from your pediatrician.

We try to stay away from anything acidic, which, for Lil’ C, mostly includes citrus, {lemonade, oranges,} and tomato sauces, {pasta dishes, pizza}, although your child may eat more acidic foods, you can find them listed here: www.webmd.com

We also found out that some toothpastes contain a special foaming ingredient known as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), that irritates canker sores and can sometimes be a cause of an outbreak as well. In our search for organic toothpaste that does not contain SLS, we were introduced to Jack N’ Jill Certified Organic toothpaste.

Jack N’ Jill not only has no SLS, but there are no preservatives, and no fluoride. The toothpaste comes in five different Organic Fruit Flavors that smell AND taste good. Believe me, I’ve tried a lot of organic toothpastes, and Jack N’ Jill is one of the few organic toothpastes that tastes good {of course I tried it too!!!} Miss A and Lil’ C agree!!

Jack N' Jill Toothpaste

We highly recommend using Jack N’ Jill to prevent canker sore outbreaks in little ones, but also to promote good oral health, remember to also choose a toothbrush with soft bristles if your child is prone to canker sores!

Hopefully some of the tips in this post will help you if you have a child who suffers from chronic canker sores, but again, please remember, if the outbreaks are frequent consult your pediatrician for medical advice.

I received Jack N’ Jill products which helped aid in my canker sore prevention research. The opinions and thoughts in this post are my own, honest words. Your opinions may vary.

Reasons to Choose Invisalign over Dental Veneers

So you’re an adult and you want straight teeth. Perhaps you’ve thought about the wide variety of treatment plans out there. Have you narrowed it down? Often people in a similar situation will come down to two choices, Invisalign versus dental or porcelain veneers.

Invisalign vs Veneers

If these are your two options here are a few important points that may help you make your decision.

  1. Quality over Quantity – It’s a well-known fact that you get what you pay for. If you’re looking for a quick fix procedure that will mask problems with crooked or gap-teeth then veneers may be a good choice for you. However it is important to remember that in the process the entire front surface of the tooth’s enamel is permanently removed to accommodate the veneer and that this process is irreversible. Whereas, Invisalign takes a longer amount of time, {typical treatment lasts around a year} and corrects issues like overcrowding, bite problems, and more. While not an overnight solution your actual teeth end up healthier, which we’ve seen studies show improves overall health as well.
  2. Maintenance – Consider how much maintenance you want to deal with and the timing of correcting your teeth. With dental veneers the application process is relatively quick with minimal office visits {depending on how many veneers need to be added}.  However, I’d like you to consider the fact that because of the way veneers are made they do have a tendency to chip or break requiring them to be replaced which can be expensive and add to your office visit tally. Unfortunately, because of the way veneers are attached and that fact that tooth enamel does not grow back, the only option is to replace old or worn veneers. This process is necessary every 5 to 10 years depending on a number of variables. Invisalign treatment requires less office visits than a typical orthodontist but more up-front that with veneers. However, once you are done with the Invisalign treatment and occasional refinement, wearing your nightly retainer will allow you to keep your perfected smile.
  3. Price Point – Depending on the number, and quality of veneers you need to achieve your perfect smile, each veneer can run anywhere from $900 to $2,500. Multiply this per tooth and add in maintenance and replacement costs and you could end up with a pretty expensive smile. In comparison, Invisalign treatments average out to be around $5,000 to $7,000 total cost, and some* dental insurances may cover a portion.
*It is rare that a dental insurance will cover adult Invisalign, but depends on your company and coverage.

One final note for you to ponder: If you ultimately choose veneers for whatever reason {tooth shape or coloration}, you may want to consider properly aligning the teeth with Invisalign before you get your veneers. This process could significantly decrease the total number of veneers that you need resulting in overall cost savings.

I hope my points have helped you make an educated decision as to whether Invisalign or dental veneers is for you, either way make sure you find a good doctor who is recommended for the procedure you choose best for yourself!

Are you considering Invisalign, veneers, or another option to correct your smile? I’d love to hear any questions you may have.

Braces: Then and Now

Everyone knows the best way to fix crooked teeth is to see an Orthodontist for treatment, that hasn’t changed. Some even say that an early form of dental braces even dates back to 400-300 BC and adorns the mouths of ancient mummified bodies. Weird: yes, Resourceful: yes.

Throughout the centuries braces have gone through many changes, each step of the way improving materials being used as well as steps involved in the teeth-straightening process.

Here are some pictures of my friends, their children, (Thanks for the pics ladies: http://www.musingsfromme.com,  www.Shanamama.com) and of course super-pop star Katy Perry sporting traditional metal braces.

Traditional Braces

But today, there’s a choice. The choice to go a little more incognito with your dental care. With Invisalign and Invisalign Teen, the choice is clear, literally!

Not only are the aligners next to invisible, you can easily remove them to eat and drink, brush/floss your teeth, for quick photos, or any activity as long as you try to keep them in the recommended 23 hours a day. Invisalign’s technology department is hard at work {trust me, I got to visit one of their development teams in person} figuring out ways to make Invisalign even more awesome than it already is. You would be blown away if you knew how each tray {one top, one bottom for most cases} was made and the care and precision behind it would amaze you.

Because Invisalign technology is steadily increasing that means great things for orthodontic care and the fact that Invisalign can treat many more cases now than ever, including cases that you may think too difficult for the procedure. If you’re not sure, ask your Orthodontist if you are a good candidate for Invisalign or Invisalign Teen. Oh, and make sure you check out these NOW pictures for some inspiration!!

Back to School – Looking Your Best

Invisalign Teen

Back to School BackpackNow that it’s back to school time most kids are doing everything they can to look sharp. Some have complete new wardrobes, some have fresh haircuts, and others are focusing on more long-term changes. While I am one to say looks are not the most important thing in the world, it’s important especially for children and teens to feel their best, and when it comes to great looking teeth, oral hygiene also comes into play.

As with any change we or our children make to improve our lives, eating better foods, working out, checking off our to-do lists, making sure they study for tests and achieve good grades or even having an amazing smile, there is always work and effort involved.

Having Invisalign* myself I can attest that while the system makes my journey towards straighter teeth easier than traditional braces, I still have moments that I have to remind myself about the end goal of the entire process. Just as I need to work out to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, I need to wear my aligners for a minimum of 23 hours daily to achieve maximum results.

The Invisalign Teen program offers compliance indicators offer a great reminder for your teen or child as to whether or not they are wearing their aligners the appropriate amount of time. If this is a concern for you or your kiddo here are a few ideas to encourage them to continue wearing their aligners and make it to their end goal: a beautiful, healthy smile.

1. Create a smile board. Cut out images of what you or your child believe are beautiful smiles. Also, use their last image from the Clin-check at the orthodontist (some will give upon request, check with your orthodontist.)

2. Reward them. Aka bribe them. Aside from the reward of a great smile some of us or our kiddos may need an added incentive, for me I’d love to go to the spa when I’m completely done with my 50 aligners. (and if any of you want to send a gift card for my success I will not “return to sender”. :))

3. Find successes. Visit blogs from previous Invisalign Mom Advisory members, or check out video testimonials from real Invisalign users on Invisalign’s website here: http://www.invisalign.com

How do you encourage your children, or self to work hard to look your best??

Top Seven Reasons to Wear Invisalign

For those of you who know me through my blog or in person you know I can be a little silly, but mostly fun. The other day, as I was coincidentally at the orthodontist waiting for my 3-month check up, I wrote down what I thought were some fun reasons {some silly some more realistic} to wear Invisalign. Here is my list, in no particular order. Let me know if you agree.

1. All the “cool kids” are doing it:

Invisalign Cool Kids

Invisalign’s Studio Program features some pretty famous, performing teens {http://www.mommybknowsbest.com/young-hollywoods-secret-to-smile-success/} and of course their Mom Blogger Advisory Board isn’t too shabby either {http://www.mommybknowsbest.com/invisalign-mom-advisory-board-my-induction/}

2. They have a super power
Invisibility man

It’s invisibility {sort of}. Invisalign is nearly invisible to the human eye, more often than not I have people who tell me they didn’t even realize I had it, except when I’m super smiling and laughing under bright lights and in close proximity.

3. They’re magic – one minute they’re there and the next they’re gone!
Magic Hat

Invisalign aligners are easy to remove and replace after eating, drinking, and brushing. Once I got my attachments the first week or so was a little harder but now it’ so easy to pop them off and on, and I love the fact that I don’t need a special tool to keep my teeth clean and the fact that I can easily floss.

4. Keeps you squeaky clean
Rubber Duckie

Because you’re able to brush and floss just as if you were not wearing braces you are able to continue your normal oral care and make sure your teeth are squeaky clean.

5. Trays aid the countdown

Aligner Count Down

Each week you change out your aligner you get to count down till the end of your treatment. The typical length of treatment is around a year, give or take. I have 51 upper and 51 lower trays in all, how about you???

6. Don’t have to worry about color coordinating like with traditional braces ( they match your entire wardrobe)
Little Miss Matched

Thank goodness because I already have a problem matching my socks!!

7. In all seriousness they actually do make a difference.
Jenn Invisalign Progress

I can already see movement in my teeth even at week 15. I’m so excited to continue this process and keep you updated. I’m loving my smile and will be sharing more with you next month on my progress and the testimonials of others.

In the meantime if you have any questions or comments feel free to leave them here and I’ll get back to you!!

Young Hollywood’s Secret to Smile Success

Invisalign Teen

I don’t have a tween or a teen in my home, but I’m sure before I know it my little girls will be big girls and be total “teenie boppers” just like their mom was. I do however have the priveledge of knowing some of the teen “idols” of today because I have a 14, soon to be 15 year-old sister, who keeps me somewhat clued in on the hottest things.

Invisalign TeenWhen I heard about the Invisalign Studio program and the fact that many young stars are wearing Invisalign I was very impressed. As a mom and someone wearing Invisalign I know the benefits of Invisalign over traditional braces, but it’s even cooler to see young hollywood and your average teenagers researching and asking about Invisalign too.

Invisalign Studio members include budding 12 year-old film star Bailee Madison,  Jimmy Bennett, who just celebrated his “Rockin’ 16th birthday” with an Invisalign Teen sponsored party at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood, Zendaya Coleman from Disney’s hit television show “Shake It Up,” and Cameron Quisengfrom the band Allstar Weekend.

Take a look at some great videos including a confessional with Jimmy Bennett himself, images of Bailee Madison with her aligners, and more information about Invisalign Teen here:

For an everyday-teen’s perspective I encourage you to check out my friend Lolli’s blog post about her daughter’s experience with Invisalign Teen and see the results yourself:  http://betterinbulk.net/2012/04/invisalign-a-teens-story.html
