The new year is upon us and it’s a well-known time of year for change. People make resolutions, what not to eat, what to do more of or less of, and also changes on how they are going to organize or manage their household.

Here are some resolutions to help you manage your household while making small changes that will improve the organization and tidiness of your home:

1. Replace your batteries in items like remote controls, smoke detectors, and nightlights to avoid last minute (especially night-time) battery changes. Also using batteries that last longer and cost less help to stretch out the need for battery changes, which is why we stick with Rayovac batteries.

2. Buy furniture that doubles as organizers. We have several pieces of furniture that act as organizers, our ottoman for example has a great storage area for games and blankets, which makes for easy cleanup when friends pop in. We love anything that has bins too.

3. Use ordinary items for organizing. I love using clear shoe organizers for all kinds of things like cleaning products, and craft supplies, but mostly we use ours for our pantry door to hold grab-n-go snacks or store treats (out of kiddos reach).

4. Line your fridge. Do you love cleaning your refrigerator?? No, no one that I know does either. To set yourself up for easy, stressless cleaning, consider lining your refrigerator with contact paper, wax/parchment paper. Move your items, lift and dispose of the paper and then replace with a fresh piece and move your items back. You’ll be saving paper towels and electricity too.

Whether your New Year’s Resolutions are different or you don’t have any, these are still some great, easy, tips to get you going in the direction of a happier, tidier home.

Healthy Resolutions for Kids {Giveaway}

Have you made resolutions for yourself, perhaps to live a better, healthier life? Do you make family resolutions? How about resolutions for your children? My girls are still pretty young, but there are things I hope, dream, and pray for them this year. I want Miss A to do well in school, I want Lil C to flourish as her own individual, and of course I hope that they are both loving, caring people who think of others, among many, many other traits and values.

In general, my girls are pretty healthy when it comes to eating, being active, and overall health, which we are very blessed by. However, there are always improvements we like to make to continue to give them the best lives possible, and I’m guessing if you’re still reading this post, you may have a special child(ren) in your life that you care about as well.

Here are some of my personal tips that I’ve used to encourage health in my girls lives and also some that we will begin to implement and work on.

Get Active!

Whether you participate or not {strongly recommended}, take your kiddos to the park, enroll them in sports classes, go for a family hike. It’s great for them physically, but also builds confidence, if done in a group encourages social growth, and makes them happier *see endorphins.

Have Fun with Food

We like to make food faces on pancakes, drink out of fun straws, cook together, make mustaches out of everything, especially milk and color our foods with food coloring to brighten up any plate.

Enrich their Lives

Give your child opportunities to volunteer, and learn about a senese of community. Visit museums and historical landmarks. Let them express themselves through art, dance, writing, help them find their best means of self-expression and celebrate it!

Make Healthier Choices

Trade out treats for fruits, hide veggies where the kids will least expect it, and make sure your children get plenty of hormone-free calcium. Since Lil’ C was 1 year old we’ve been trying to get her to drink milk, any kind of milk, soy, almond, chocolate, and used every trick in the book, we’ve given it a few months and just last night at dinner, because “sissy” LOVES milk {and if I could caps the LOVES even bigger I would, I have not seen a child who enjoys milk more than Miss A} we offered Lil’ C a medicine cup of Smart Balance® Kids Milk and she drank it! No matter what the reason for making health a bigger priority in your life, the outcome will always be a good one, if done the right way. Personally, I have struggled with my own weight battle since I was in the 4th grade. I KNOW what it takes to be a healthy, fit person, but my foundation and food issues from my childhood through early adulthood continue to take over.

I am the type of person who will always need to monitor my calorie intake, that’s just the way it is. With the BodyMedia Fit, I’m able to keep track of what I’m putting in my body and how active I am. It’s a GREAT reminder of how unhealthy I’ve been, especially when I see so few hours of sleep. A Taste of Kidfresh Quick and Healthy Meals

Have you resolved to eat better this year? That’s awesome!! What about the kiddos? I know each household is different, some families adhere to the “the kids eat what we eat,” motto, and others there are parents making one dish per person. Whether or not you agree with any form of feeding the kiddos, I hope we can all agree we want to try to give our kids the healthiest food possible. Sometimes it’s not possible to eat healthy. Here are a few reasons we as parents opt for the unhealthy:


  • it’s quicker to grab fast food or pop something into the microwave
  • it’s cheaper
  • we don’t want to make a whole separate meal if we’re not having the same thing they are


Now the list goes on, as we all know reasons pile up, but Kidfresh, a foodline designed for kids ages 2 to 8 years has developed meals that are affordable, microwaveable, and 100% natural. At about $3.49, Kidfresh meals tout that they are made with all-natural ingredients, trans-fat/corn syrup/ filler/ artificial coloring/ free. But do they taste good??

Kidfresh Mac + CheeseMiss A doesn’t like pasta {I know!! What kid doesn’t like pasta?!?!},  so we didn’t even try them with her because we knew what the verdict would be. Baby C, on the other hand, eats almost everything we put in front of her, especially carbs. The first try I gave Baby C Kidfresh’s Spaghetti Loops Bolognese, unfortunately she didn’t care for these so I ended up discarding most of the meal, but as we all know just because a kid doesn’t eat doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try again. The next time I tried their Wagon Wheels Mac + Cheese {these are the only two options my grocer carries,}. As soon as I took these noodles out of the microwave I could smell the real cheese {you know how it smells different than the processed stuff,} and it was delightful, and even though I wanted to munch on it I restrained myself. Baby C gobbled it up until she was full and I saved the leftovers for the next day. She wasn’t loving the leftovers, however when I gave her the Mac + Cheese again a couple of weeks later she ate almost the entire dish, I attribute her finickiness to being a toddler.

My favorite thing about Kidfresh aside from how awesomely healthy the meals are is that they are good portions, the Mac + Cheese didn’t come drenched in cheese, it was just the right amount, encouraging my kids to eat but not stuff themselves.

Personally I’d love to try the 4 other flavors that Kidfresh makes, so I hope that EarthFare Huntersville stocks them up {hint, hint}. However I love that I have a quick, healthy option for Baby C when I need something fast and I don’t have to go with the alternative, or at least it gives me another meal for the food queue.

True Resolutions for 2012 – Trop50

Tropicana Trop50Are you a resolution maker? Someone who vows to do better in the New Year? Even if it’s continuous throughout the entire year I think most of us resolve to improve on what we are already doing. I personally know there are always things I can be working on in my life. I’d like to share a few of mine with you.

Make sure I have daily devotions, if I can’t do them in the mornings then at least sometime throughout the day

-It’s very important for me to have time with God and to make Him more of a priority this year.

Take time for me. As a mom who puts herself on the back burner {can you relate?}, I am promising myself to work less, get more sleep, drink more water, eat healthier, and, dare I say it, even pamper myself once and a while.

Be the best mom I can be. Having more silly moments with the girls, creating and maintaining a close circle of healthy, supportive, fun, good friends for them to play with, and also making sure they are healthy inside and out as well.

Which brings me to mention Trop50. Baby C has never took to the bottle, unfortunately when I was nursing hubby did not get to help feed her, and I made sure I was always somewhat close-by in case she needed to be fed. She never took formula and more importantly when I weaned her she did not want to have anything to do with cow’s milk. We tried everything, bottle, sippy cup, and even medicine dropper, she just wasn’t going for it. Because Calcium is such an important vitamin we consulted with our pediatrician and he suggested other ways for her to get the nutrients she needed. One way was to introduce Calcium enriched orange juice (among other ways).
