Tips for Younger Children with Eyeglasses

Last year Lil’ C mentioned she was having a hard time seeing things in her Kindergarten classroom. Little did I know there were several signs that I brushed off that were pointing to her needing glasses. After a visit to the eye doctor, I realized that Lil’ C’s headaches probably weren’t related to allergies but most likely from eye strain.

While I was glad we went to see the eye doctor I wish I would have figured out that C’s eyes were bothering her sooner. Regardless, we found out that her eyes only need a little bit of help as her eye muscles are still developing. The ophthalmologist said this is a pretty common issue with children in this age group.

Isn’t she cute?!?!

Since I’ve never needed glasses I wasn’t sure how to properly clean them or wear them. Luckily we’ve learned some great tips on eyeglass care for children that will help C take care of her glasses.

“If they’re not on your face they’re in your case.” This was a rhyme that C was taught to ensure that her glasses go in a safe place when she’s not wearing her glasses.

These days having glasses is “cool” and everyone wants a chance to wear them, unfortunately it’s also an opportunity for your child’s glasses get broken. Role play with your child scenarios where they learn to be comfortable saying, “no” to their friends when it comes to trying on glasses.

Purchase at least 2 pairs of glasses in case one is broken or misplaced. Of course buying glasses can get pricey so I suggest finding the frame shape for your child and checking out discount glasses websites like the ones we found at GlassesUSA.com. Aside from having a pair that she can use in case one is damaged, we also found that it’s nice for her to have a pair in her bedroom for nighttime reading and downstairs for school work since she’s not required to wear her glasses 24/7.

Have your eye doctor, or another adult show your child the correct way to remove their glasses. Often times Lil’ C will pull her glasses off with one hand causing her glasses to need adjusting and even going as far as bending the screws in her glasses {oops}. Sometimes you have to learn the hard way, but teaching your child is the best way to help their glasses last.

Purchase the protection plan. Trust me, it’s well worth it. See tip #4, C needed a new pair of glasses after bending one of her screws and scratching up her lenses a little, luckily we only had to pay a small copay for a replacement pair.

Diabetes Awareness Month Tips and Savings

This is a sponsored post in partnership with The Motherhood.

Did you know November is Diabetes Awareness Month?? According to the CDC, more than 29 million Americans have diabetes and even more that don’t know they have it. That’s a lot of people! If you aren’t personally affected by diabetes I bet you can think of someone who is.

I’ve seen people living with diabetes all my life.I grew up with a couple of children who had Type 1 diabetes and required an insulin pump and shots. In my own family, my mother had Type 2 diabetes {praise God has not been diabetic for years because of weight loss and healthier living}, and my father-in-law who passed a couple of years ago had diabetes that left him with several diabetes related conditions.

While it’s never something you want to hear that people have to live with, there are ways to modify your diet and supplements/medications that can help manage diabetes.

Protect Your Smile and Enamel Health as You Age

This is a sponsored post on behalf of CVS/pharmacy and Colgate Enamel Health all opinions are my own.

It’s a fact that adult oral care and protecting our enamel is vital for a healthy smile.

There are so many abrasive foods and drinks that wear down our tooth enamel on a daily basis that it’s really important to be mindful of how to maintain our clean, strong smiles.

How to Protect Your Smile and Enamel Health MommyB #healthyteeth #colgatehealthyenamel

As a coffee and soda drinker I love the NEW Colgate Enamel Health toothpaste and toothbrush because together, they help to replenish natural calcium and polish tooth enamel. Healthy enamel doesn’t just look good, it also helps create a smoother surface so germs are less likely to stick as well.

Being an adult undergoing teeth straightening treatment my teeth have also been subject to a lot of wear, so anything I can do to whiten and protect my teeth during and after treatment you can count me in.

Tips for Having an Intentional Summer

This is a sponsored post on behalf of The Motherhood.

Like many families do, our family packed up our belongings and moved into a new home. Though we’re on the other side of “town” and only 30 minutes from our old house, it’s almost like we’re in a new state. We’re not familiar with the parks, don’t know the best farmer’s markets to go to, haven’t got a clue what the best summer camps are. One thing we do know though is that even though we have a lot of unpacking and settling to do, we want our girls to have an intentional summer.

What does intentional summer mean for our family? It looks a little something like this:

Tips for an Intentional Summer MommyB

My nature is to unpack and make sure everything has a home and designated spot, but the longer I’m a mom the more I realize that I want these beautiful girls to have a fun and memorable childhood. That includes spending time with friends, and creating family traditions.

Here are some of the tips I’ve used this busy summer to make sure we’re being intentional:

1. Create a Summer Bucket List with a variety of activities to complete throughout the summer.

2. Vary your play, choose one water play day, one outdoor play, one indoor play day and theme them as well.

3. Be spontaneous (I know a Type-A personality saying this, but I’ve really had to step out of my personality to make sure my kids enjoy themselves), go for ice cream before dinner, pop into a kids play place with no notice. You’ll be surprised at how impactful of a memory this will be with your children later on in life as well.

4. Let them choose an activity or destination. Giving your children the power of choice will not only be really exciting, but it will also give them confidence in making decisions.

5. Play safe and be proactive. I am “one of those moms”, you know the ones who carry a big bag (not a diaper bag anymore but still a considerable size) with everything imaginable in them? I am certain I would win if I were on the game show “Let’s Make a Deal!” by pulling out something random that almost no human carries on their person. That’s what’s great though, when the girls scrape a knee while playing hopscotch at a friends house or are playing in the water I’m armed with the right mom gear to make sure we can keep the fun going.
