Go!Go! Sports Girls – Toy Review

Be inspired, be a dreamer, think BIG!

We have some lofty goals for our girls, but feel that instilling future thinking qualities in them now will help them to aspire to greatness. We want our girls to love God, love others, and work hard to accomplish their goals in life.

I remember as a kid I wanted to be a ballerina, pediatrician, architect, mommy, teacher, and in different ways I’ve achieved some of those dreams through being a mom. Ever since they were little our girls have had dreams too. Since she was a toddler Miss C has wanted to be a fashion designer for people and pets, and Miss A has wanted to be a Little Gym instructor and has loved science and art/music since I can remember.

I’m thankful that my girls life in today’s world. While I’m not naive to the fact that in most cases women are still not being treated as equals to their male counterparts, I do know that there has been some progress and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them and their children.

Aligning with the ideals of empowering girls, Jodi Bondi Norgaard and Kara Douglass Thom have combined their talents to create Go!Go! Sports Girls. This unique line of dolls and books inspires girls to be strong, fit, smart, and adventurous to name a few qualities.

What we love about Go!Go! Sports Girls

In a world of dolls that often times are encouraging girls to grow up quickly, these dolls are refreshingly age-appropriate. Instead of focusing on hair and makeup these dolls and their stories emphasize what their bodies can do.

We were able to check out Go!Go! Sports Girls Read and Play Sets where dolls came with their very own stories. Soccer Girl Cassie and Cheerleader Girl Roxie were a big hit in our house as Miss C has been involved in both sports.

Go!Go! Sports Dolls are soft bodied, easy to clean and are also great to sleep with since they’re not hard like other dolls and toys. {Having the soft body does make them a little hard to sit up on a shelf though.} I also love that their hair isn’t easy to tangle.

Miss C really loves the books that come with the dolls. Cassie comes with a book about teamwork and Roxy’s book talks about being a leader, both great life skills for growing girls to learn.

The kit description mentions that they come with doll accessories, but our two dolls didn’t come with anything other than the doll, book, and the sports uniform the dolls were wearing. **Other dolls may include these items.

In having a chance to speak with creator Jodi Bondi Norgaard, I told her how, as a multiracial family always love when brands have girls of different ethnic backgrounds. While at this time the dolls are pretty light-skinned, Jodi mentioned they were hoping to add more dolls to their collection.

Current dolls include, Cassie – Soccer, Maya – Gymnastics, M.C. – Dance, Suzi – Swimming, Ella – Running, and Roxy – Cheerleading. Which doll do you think your child(ren) would like?

What qualities do you think are important for little girls to have??

Daddies and Daughters

Growing up not having a father figure in my life I always wondered what it would be like to have a dad. I’m blessed to now have a relationship with my dad, but definitely missed out on all the fun things dads do with their little girls. Maybe that’s why I’ve been blessed with two beautiful little girls and a husband who adores them.

I love watching DaddyB with the girls, seeing how they talk and play and how he makes them feel special. In our house the girls have Daddy-Daughter adventures where they get to spend the day with DaddyB doing some fun things mixed in with errands, it’s quality time that they treasure.

Another annual event that all three of my favorite people love is the Daddy Daughter dance that our school hosts. I love seeing DaddyB and the girls dress up and enjoy hearing all about their night. Last week they were able to participate in this years’ dance.

{Aren’t they awesome!!!}

mommyb-daddy-daughter

They had a great time getting ready. US Angels sent the girls dresses and both of them felt like princesses. The quality of the dresses are outstanding. You can see the details in the stitching and feel it in the material.

As Lil’ C twirled around the room, {feeling like a princess}, she made sure to let us know her skirt had 6 layers.

mommyb-lil-c-us-angels

And Miss A, looked grown up in the best way possible. I couldn’t believe how beautiful she is and how she’s turning into a young lady.

If you’re looking for a dress for a special occasion, like formal dances, holiday pictures, fancy parties, weddings, or confirmations, I would highly recommend checking out US Angels, they have great selections for little ones all the way through teenagers. usangels.com

At the event DaddyB and a photographer took lots of pictures and I can’t wait to see them all once they’re posted. The best thing is how the girls won’t need pictures to remember these special moments with their daddy.

For those of you who have lost your fathers in one way or another, take heart. I pray that you will find someone who will fill that role for you, be able to witness it in your own home as you make your own family, or be able to help others who might be missing out.

I received free product from US Angels, my thoughts and opinions are my own.

American Girl Charlotte Grand Opening on MommyBKnowsBest

American Girl Store is at Southpark Mall, 4400 Sharon Road, Charlotte, NC 28211. The best entrance to park next to is the Macy’s wing of Southpark Mall and you’ll find the store as you walk to the Mall entrance on the second level. {You won’t be able to miss it.}

In all we loved learning about the history of American Girl, enjoy the wholesome values and character that this brand brings to keep our daughters young as opposed to some products available on shelves today. While the cost of an American Girl doll can be higher than some customer’s budget there are options to purchase accessories, mini versions of their favorite dolls, or a great incentive {like my girls are doing} to save up their money by doing chores and birthday dollars.

Have you ever been to an American Girl store? Will you visit the NEW American Girl store in Charlotte, North Carolina?

This is not a paid post, I attended a media event upon request from American Girl. All opinions and thoughts are my own honest words. Your experiences may vary.

Why I’d Rather Build My Daughters’ Self Esteem than Buy a Magazine

My friend, and fellow blogger {and Charlottean}, Kelley Crowe wrote a post today about the controversial Sports Illustrated Swimsuit 50th Anniversary Edition. Check out her thoughts here: This is Not Okay For My Daughter’s Eyes…

I completely agree with Kelley’s sentiments and understand her frustration and here’s Why I’d Rather Build My Daughters’ Self Esteem than Buy a Magazine and my response to Kelley’s post.

Self Esteem in Girls MommyB

As a conservative mom of two girls who wants her children to know that their worth is not skin deep, issues like this really make me sad that our Nation is going overboard. I think often times the general population, (some parents included), start to tune things like this out because it’s more the norm than not.

Yes, I already mentioned I’m conservative, and things in stores like music videos or magazines, or even some mannequins dressed provocatively bother me. Do I wish that stores, television, and people would stop promoting the objectification of women? Sure! Do I wish they would stop promoting the objectification of men? drugs? alcohol? sex? etc, yup.

The only thing we can really do as parents is change our children; let them know our moral beliefs, let them ask questions and find answers, discuss situations, and maybe once and a while flip off the tv {or cut the cable like we did}, turn over the magazines in the store, and pray for our family and the future of our Nation.

What are your thoughts on the Sports Illustrated cover, or magazine in general? I’d love to hear what your thoughts are on the topic of self-esteem and children, even if you disagree, but please be respectful or your comments may be deleted.

Holiday Gift Guide for Girly Girls #MyKindofHoliday

For some of you savvy shoppers, your Christmas shopping is already complete, and others of us {ahem} still have a long list of people to shop for.

Personally, I love shopping for the many different people and personalities that we have in our circle of friends and family, and because the holidays are already busy, I try to save as much time as possible by shopping in “one-stop shops” like Target.

While we don’t buy our girls a lot of gifts we do like to get them a few things they have been wanting.

Here are a few of my favorite toys for girly girls like my gals: {ps they also play with Transformers and blocks on the regular.}

Holiday Gift Guide for Girly Girls #mykindofholiday

As you can see we have the newest LaLa Loopsies, and an adorable Hello Kitty, the awesome doctor station from Disney’s Doc McStuffins that Lil’ C has on her list, the Disney Princess Cupcake Party that the girls always love playing when we are at friend’s houses, cool craft sets, clothes, a scooter for Miss A, the interactive Jingle Bells book and talking puppy, and last but not least Lego Friends sets that both girls love playing with.

Believe me it was hard to pick 10 of my favorites! What are your girly girls getting this year?

Empowering Girls Through Sports #playlikeagirl

It’s been said that girls who actively participate in sports are healthier of course, but also get higher grades in school, and are more likely to have a better self esteem. While I won’t go as far to say that being involved in athletics will keep your daughter on the straight and narrow for the rest of her life, I will say that I have known young women who are involved in sports and have seen how focused, and guided they are in life. The positive impact that coaches and team mates have on those girls is incredible.

Growing up I was actively involved in community softball, and dance {although I would never label myself as athletic or sporty} and DaddyB played football and was in track and field. We both realize the importance of sports in our girls lives and what it brings beyond health factors.

Even though Miss A and Lil’ C are 3 and 6 years old, we feel it’s important for them to experience a diverse array of sports. From swimming to football, gymnastics and soccer, karate, dance and the list goes on, we don’t hold them back when it comes to trying out sports.

We encourage our little ladies to, “Play Like a Girl”, and even though that phrase, in the past, has carried negative connotations, we’re claiming it, and giving it power. Playing like a girl is awesome! We were made different than boys in lots of ways, and have our own strengths that we bring to the sports we play. I’m all for celebrating our uniqueness and will always be my girls’ biggest fan.

To encourage strength and pride in being an athletic girl, we watch television programming, {especially pre-Olympics and Olympic sports} YouTube videos, and talk about female professional athletes from different sports genres. I love seeing the glimmer our daughters’ eyes as they watch the Williams’ sisters, Yuna Kim, Gabby Douglas, and other awesome girl-powered athletes play. The sense of empowerment that my girls get from seeing strong women rock their sport and being active is invaluable.

Whether our girls are playing in our backyard, participating in sports with friends, or enjoying one of their classes, we’re always proud of their efforts. I think our proudest moments are when our girls conquer their fears and you can see the pride on their faces. Of course I love the moment Miss A learned how to cartwheel and think it’s awesome Lil C can dribble a soccer ball like a champ, but knowing that they both can be empowered through the sports and activities they participate in is what makes our hearts happy.

Verizon FiOS gives your family the connection and speed you need to play with the big boys. Share your proudest moment of your daughter’s athletic achievements at www.verizon.com/playlikeagirl. You could be chosen to win a grand prize valued at $5,000!

Building Confidence for Biracial Girls – Yay9! Review

This is a review and review samples were used in this review.

As my girls get older I want them to know how beautiful they are, because they are created in God’s image. Through books and talking with several biracial parents and biracial people themselves I know that often times biracial children have a hard time figuring out who they are. I know I am only a small piece in their puzzle to loving themselves, but as a mom teaching them self worth and confidence in who they are is one of the more important values I want them to own.

I’ve tried to learn tips and tricks for styling their hair and feel like I do a pretty good job with the resources I have. DaddyB and I tell them all the great things not only about their looks but about the people they are. We often have dates with each child on their own to connect and let them know how special they are. Of course we do also focus and celebrate their uniqueness.

When Miss A was about 3 I stumbled on this Sesame Street video:

i-love-my-hair-tee

I was so excited to show it to Miss A and also bought her this really cool shirt to go with it: {pictured on right}

And of course as Lil C grew up she got this as a hand-me-down and loves wearing it. We always ask the girls which one they are or is their favorite.

Another fun company that celebrates diversity and being who you are, was brought to me by another awesome blogger is Yay9!.

Yay9! is a company that wants to be an experience for little girls who celebrate their own style. The characters Joyce, LuLu and Violet represent each one of the company founders’ girls and their unique personalities. Not only that, but they are also celebrating diversity and encouraging my girls to love their hair, skin color, and their style.

Addye Durant, the creator of Yay9!, has a vision to make Joyce, LuLu and Violet part of a movement and with our support, expand their projects and brand.

I love reading the about pages for businesses and that is no different for  Yay9!. You can tell from the get-go that they are a fun company and this transfers to their products as well. I love that the brand is great for little girls, tweens, and teens too.

We had the opportunity to check out a couple of their tees and I thought the packaging of the shirts was very creative. They were wrapped like candy and included really cool and large hair bobble hair ties. These shirts do run very small so I suggest ordering big since they do have some shrinkage too. The girls LOVED the designs can you tell?!?!

How do you teach your children confidence?

Be sure to head Yay9!’s website to read more, shop, and check out the Joyce, Violet, and Lulu in action.

I also encourage you to visit their Indiegogo page and if you like their vision, make your contribution, and get your perk.

We received review samples of Yay9! products in order to give honest opinions. Review samples are placed into consideration and are only posted if it is something we believe is important to share about. We like Yay9! however we understand your opinions may vary. Thank you for being considerate and having an open mind while reading this post.

MommyB Knows Best's Holiday Gift Guide

MommyB Knows Best's Holiday Gift Guide Deck the Halls and break out your lists it’s time for another installment of MommyB Knows Best’s Holiday Gift Guide for the family! In speaking with different families I know that some families provide lists of desired items and others have little to no ideas to go off of. Personally, I like a list for a guideline, but I love purchasing items that I think the gift recipient will be surprised by and love. Here are a few unique stocking stuffer and gift ideas that I wanted to share with you. I hope they can be helpful in your holiday shopping.

CVS Beauty Collage

Stocking stuffers can be the last item on your shopping list and sometimes the most difficult. I love shopping for little trinkets at CVS/pharmacy. When it comes to my stocking stuffer wishes I’d pick the CVS/pharmacy ExtraCare Beauty Club picks. Some of my favorites are Revlon’s Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain, Nuance Salma Hayek Walnut Body Scrub {it’s to die for!!}, and for fun, Katy Perry Lashes Oh My!{choose something modest or get fancy!} to name a few. All of these products are around $7 and under in CVS/pharmacy’s Beauty Club, perfect stocking stuffer price and size.

Our favorite Christmas movie to watch with our girls is Veggie Tale’s St. Nicholas: A Story of Joyful Giving. We like this movie because it tells about the person St. Nicholas and explains the reasons behind why we give gifts at Christmas time, something we try to teach our girls. You may even want to consider buying this one to watch before Christmas gets here. The lowest price I’ve found the video so far is on Walmart’s Website.

Won’t you share??? What’s going in the stockings at your house??

Disney’s Sofia the First Premier

Cinderella Princess Sofia the First

This coming Sunday, November 18 (7:00-8:00 p.m., ET/PT) Disney will introduce its first little girl princess with the debut of “Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess,” on the Disney Channel and again on Thursday, November 22 (9:00-10:00 a.m., ET/PT) on Disney Junior. If you happen to miss it, the movie will also be available the following day on WATCH Disney Junior, Disney Junior On Demand and DisneyJunior.com.

Cinderella Princess Sofia the First

Set in the storybook world of Enchancia, the movie introduces Sofia, an average girl whose life suddenly transforms when her mother marries the king and she becomes a princess, Sofia the First. Sofia must learn to navigate the extraordinary life of royalty while holding on to her own hopes and dreams. Her journey to being the best she can be also paves the way for those around her to realize how special they each are. Disney’s Cinderella makes an appearance in the movie to offer Sofia some words of wisdom – princess to princess.

Sofia’s royal adventure begins as she prepares to move into the castle with her mom, starting a new family with her step-father, King Roland II, and step-siblings, Amber and James. Helping Sofia in her journey are the three headmistresses of Royal Prep Academy – Fauna, Flora and Merryweather (the beloved fairies seen in Disney’s classic “Sleeping Beauty”) and royal steward, Baileywick, as well as a group of cute woodland creatures led by a wise-talking rabbit, Clover. Sofia soon discovers that looking like a princess isn’t all that difficult, but displaying honesty, loyalty, courage, independence, compassion and grace is what makes one truly royal.

Created for kids age 2-7 and their families, the stories of “Sofia the First” communicate positive messages and life lessons that are applicable to young children. While she lives in a captivating world of castles, wizards and flying horses, Sofia remains a relatable peer-to-peer princess who is experiencing many of the same social situations as young viewers at home including learning how to fit in, making new friends and mastering new skills.

Check out a fun Sofia the First music video here: Princess Sofia the First Music Video and browse the rest of the videos for more on this adorable Princess.

A “Sofia the First” television series will premiere in early 2013. The movie and series will roll out internationally through mid-2013 on both Disney Channels and Disney Junior channels.

Sofia the First

Since watching the preview trailers on Disney Junior Miss A and Lil’ C have been so excited, even as much so as to play the characters of Princess Sofia and her mother when they are dressing up.

We can’t wait for Sunday night because we’ll be hosting an amazing Princess Sofia Premier Party with our friends!

While we know you can’t be here in our home, we hope that you’ll be celebrating on Sunday too!!

And for birthday party ideas make sure you check out the post after our party filled with all sorts of Princess Sofia the First ideas and images!

Perfectly Perrywinkle Back-To-School

Perfectly Perrywinkle Back-to-SchoolLittle Miss A, my oldest, my first-born had her first day of Pre-K yesterday. In preparation I made sure she had a few days of Little Gym summer camp since she’s been home with me 24/7 pretty much.

And even though summer camp gave her a little taste of what school would be like she was still nervous about going to school.

Days leading up to school DaddyB and I talked school up telling her what it would be like, how much fun she would have, and tried to calm her fears.

Miss As First Day of PreschoolYesterday morning when she woke up she was in a great mood, {which at 4 years old sometimes can be a toss up}, she got dressed in her school uniform, but most importantly added her Perfectly Perrywinkle headband to complete the cutest preschool outfit ever. {Sorry for the mobile pic but our main laptop is in the “shop”.}

Aside from being super cute the headband was customized to Miss A’s school colors, red, white, and navy, and at Perfectly Perrywinkle you can request colors to go with your child’s favorite outfit, your family’s favorite sports team, or you can select one of their pre-made headbands listed on their Etsy site.

The headbands are a little pricier than most of Miss A’s other headbands, but for one she can wear to school anytime we’ll be able to get a lot of use out of it, plus they make perfect gifts, *hint, hint!!

Perfectly Perrywinkle’s headbands are for any age, brand new baby girls through sassy moms and can dress up any outfit. The headbands and materials are made with great care and cute fabric and you can really tell. Make sure you check out their Facebook page and feel free to tell them MommyB sent you.

I received super cute samples of Perfectly Perrywinkle headbands for this review, which in no way effect my opinions expressed in this post. All opinions expressed are mine, however yours may vary,
