Kids Fall Fashion Tips – See Kai Run Giveaway

This is a sponsored post/giveaway in partnership with Nakturnal

Fall is here and that means more than just pumpkin spice everything. It means it’s time to start switching your kiddo’s wardrobe to long sleeves and pants. This past weekend I started organizing the girls’ closets. Donating clothes that are too small for C and pulling out big sister’s hand-me-downs for Fall. Miss A’s closet is a different story, since she’s the oldest I realized we need to make some shopping trips in the very near future.

While Miss A doesn’t love to go shopping, she definitely has her very own style even at the ripe age of 9. Don’t you miss the younger ages when most of the time you could just choose what your child would wear without much input from them?? {I know some kids are born opinionated when it comes to clothes, but I “got away” with picking out clothes for a while with Miss A.}

Now that the time is upon us, I figured I would share some of our favorite tips for shopping for Fall clothes.

Head to consignment sales

Fall is a great time to head to the consignment sales, when you’re ready to swap out seasons. A lot of consignment stores and sales will have Fall items at a reduced rate. I’ve been noticing some great specials on some of my favorite consignment stores and at Kid-t0-Kid I can take the clothes that C has grown out of and use the store credit to buy new-to-us clothes for Miss A.

Take advantage of online sales

Online resources tend to have great deals right now and if you know your child’s size you’re bound to get what you need at a good price. Plus it’s easier for your child to choose the looks they like without having to head to the stores after school or even worse ….. on weekends!!! Plus aren’t these shoes adorable???

Consign online

If you’re not in love with my first two tips, maybe you can combine them and find consignment choices online. My blogger friend Brittany Dixon raves about ThredUp.com. She uses the service to buy used clothing for her sweet girls and seems to love it. PS, there are other companies who do this as well but I wanted to recommend a brand I’ve heard good things about.

Clothing swap

Sadly, we don’t have too many friends who hand us down for Miss A but C gets some adorable clothes from friends so her closet is always bursting with lots of options for Fall fashion. Some moms choose to host a clothing swap in their home, our school is also great about having uniform swaps, and we pack up boxes to give to our friends letting them know whatever their girls won’t wear they are free to donate or give to a friend.

Since sometimes updating your child’s Fall wardrobe can get a little pricey, I’m giving away a $50 giftcard to help you out.

How to Take the Spooky Out of October

Let’s face it, some families just do not like the spooky aspect of October. My girls aren’t into the skeletons or creepy zombies {one more than the other} and I’m not sure if it’s because I’m getting older, but as the years go by the more I’m turned off by scary things too. {I used to enjoy horror films growing up, now not so much.}

We have tons of friends, neighbors, and family who don’t mind a little spooky and some who totally love it, but for those of you who are like us, not fans, here are some ways to “Take the spooky out of October“.

How to Take the Spooky out of October MommyB

Celebrate Fall – Below are some ways your family can focus on Autumn and the Harvest.

  • Pick pumpkins at a local farm, it’s a fun activity and provide great decorations.
  • Leaf Art. Whether you’re making a banner from paper leaves or you’re using leaves for a leaf rubbing collage, there are a lot of things that you can make using one of Fall’s most beautiful gifts. {I pinned a bunch on my Holiday Themes pinterest board.}
  • Talk to your children about harvest, what it means for farmers, and the importance of it.
  • Host a Fall celebration with bobbing for apples, warm cinnamon donuts, and pumpkin painting.
  • Decorate your home with leaves, pumpkins, hay bales, maize corn, and other fall favorites.
  • Buy deliciously scented Fall candles. October is a great start to an awesome smelling home, in my opinion.
  • Enjoy warm drinks including hot cocoa, apple cider, and pumpkin spice anything.
  • Host a pie night with friends and create awesome Fall flavors, half the fun is baking and the other is eating.
  • Have a Fall family photo shoot. Make sure you choose a location that will highlight the weather and Fall changes.

Non Spooky Fall MommyB

What are some of the ways your family celebrates October in a non spooky way?

In honor of an un-scary October, I’m giving away a great book by Tommy Nelson, “Good Night, Little Pumpkin”. This adorable, not terrifying board book is great for children ages 1 to 4 years. It’s a sweet story that talks about the sounds, and smells of Fall that your kiddos will love to sit with you and read.

Family Getaway: Tweetsie Railroad Review

Thank you Tweetsie for media admission for this review.

Looking for fun weekend activities with your family? I strongly encourage you to take the beautiful trip through the Blue Ridge Mountains and have the time of your life at  North Carolina’s first amusement park: Tweetsie Railroad.

My family and I (kids ages 2 and 5 years) were able to spend an entire day compliments of Tweetsie enjoying a variety of attractions. Tweetsie is a very family friendly attraction that is celebrating their 55th season, and has something for every age group.We enjoyed a delicious lunch, in a cute themed restaurant, for a fair price, while we scoped out Tweetsie’s four major areas, Miner’s Mountain, Main Street, Country Fair, and Tweetsie Junction.

Tweetsie Park Map

We pushed the stroller to up to the Country Fair, which, truth-be-told, was quite a workout, so that our girls could enjoy the fun carnival-style rides {there were only a few rides that our 2 year-old was not able to go on}. They loved the carousel but really wanted to ride the chair lift to Miner’s Mountain. This is what mommy thought of the ride:

Tweetsie Chair Lift Mom

If you are a scaredy cat  fearful of heights like me, Tweetsie so kindly offers a very uneventful bus ride up to Miner’s Mountain as well. Also if you take the bus vs. the chair lift you can bring the stroller up the mountain with you. Not surprisingly at all, the other members of my family wanted to ride the chair lift again…and again.

Once we safely arrived at the top, we enjoyed feeding various breeds of animals at the Deer Park, and watching the wonderful live entertainment, including the clog dancers, hilarious magic show, and Hopper and Porter’s™ Musical Celebration. The girls also rode a few more rides, and watching people pan for gold. We did our own “gem mining” at one of the many shops, filling our gem bag as full as we could get with beautifully colored stones – a great souvenir.

Tweetsie Gem Mine Family MommyB

Believe it or not, that’s not all Tweetsie has to offer. Of course Tweetsie Railroad wouldn’t be famous if it weren’t for their amazing steam engine, Number 12 that gives train rides throughout the day, lasting for three-miles and stopping every so often for the engineer to fill up with coal and water. PARENT TIP: If this train is a little too loud for your smaller children {or the big ones}, there’s a smaller train on top of Miner’s Mountain that features a mouse-filled, musical, neon-colored, tunnel that will make the kids giggle and dance.

Before you leave, make sure you stop by all the fantastic shops around the park, mostly featured on Main Street, each one carries different items anywhere from snacks, to clothing, handmade gifts, and of course Tweetsie gear. Our girls loved their sparkly cowgirl hats, and said, “yee-haw” the entire ride home to Charlotte, or at least until they fell asleep in the car, being a cowgirl all day is tiring work!

Reader Kelly H reflects on her time spent at the park as a child and how she’s making Tweetsie a part of her own children’s memories: “Going to Tweetsie Railroad, as a child, remains one of my most vivid memories. Riding the train anticipating the Cowboy/Indian fight, meeting Fred Kirby, and being “in jail”..great times. I have enjoyed making new memories with my four children there also.”

Here are a few more pictures from my family’s trip, and our amazing time at the beautiful Tweetsie Railroad.

Tweetsie Collage

To get the family even more excited for a visit to Tweetsie I strongly encourage you to check out their amazing website: http://tweetsie.com/ that answers any questions you may have, features great photos of their hottest attractions, and also has some fun games and facts for you and the kiddos too.

Prices are well worth the cost considering there is so much to do. We are planning another trip very soon, not to mention that the Blue Ridge Mountain area has a lot of other sites and attractions to offer. I would definitely recommend making a weekend trip of it. {Tweetsie’s website also has discount offers for partnering businesses in their area.}

Tweetsie Tickets MommyB

General Admission tickets are: Adults $35, Children 3-12 $22 and Children age 2 and under- Free. If you enter the park after 3:00pm you get to use your ticket for the following day as well. *Some restrictions apply. {Pretty cool if you ask me!} Head to Tweetsie Railroad’s website or Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/Tweetsie to find out more information on group rates and senior pricing.

Have you ever been to Tweetsie Railroad? What’s your favorite part?

Or Are you considering a trip? Let us know if you have any questions. Thanks for reading!!!

Thank you to Tweetsie Railroad for great customer service, a clean park, and our complimentary admission tickets. All thoughts and opinions are honest and based on our own experiences, your experience may vary.

How Our Family Prepares for Halloween – Kmart Kreator

Kmart Kreator

Now that Fall is officially here, the major Fall and Winter holidays are not far behind. With just over a month until Halloween I know some of my friends are getting their Fall and Halloween decorations up in their yards and redecorating the inside of their homes, and of course buying all of the Fall scents like pumpkin spice, apple cider and the delicious aromas that accompany this time of year.

There are three main things we do as a family to prepare for Halloween. We decorate, go to the pumpkin farm as a family, and choose Halloween costumes for the girls.

MommyBKnowsBest HayrideWe, the B Family, {that’s my family in case you didn’t already know}, usually wait until at least October 1st to get our decorations up, the fall leaf window decals, our adorable pumpkin votives that spell, “Fall” and of course anything cutesy within the Fall/Halloween theme, since my girls think most things this time of year are, “spoooooooky.”

As a family tradition, we always plan to go around Mid-October to a local farm, {the same one every year}. Each member of our family selects their very own pumpkin. Again, because our girls are tender spirited we are very mindful of how we decorate our pumpkins once we get them home.

For Miss A’s first Halloween, we painted her hands and placed handprints on the pumpkin, one year we used felt stickers to decorate, and this year, we have colored brads from Kmart to decorate our pumpkins with. What can I say, sometimes I stay traditional and other times I like to mix it up! But either way, knowing how we are going to decorate or what medium we’ll use definitely helps save us some time and is fun way to get creative and display our different creations each year too.

Speaking of creations, one of the biggest preparations we have to make when Halloween comes around is choosing a costume. If you don’t purchase a costume in time, one of three things could happen:

a. your child will get their costume in the mail on November 3rd and never forgive you

b. they will have to attend Halloween parties and go trick-or-treating in one of the few leftover clearance costumes that no one really wants

c. they’ll end up wearing their regular clothes and say they are a student, or a teenager {which surprisingly we get a lot of at my house. When this happens we make the trick-or-treaters do a dance or sing a song, they have to work for their candy at the B house!!}

Kmart Kreator Back on topic, this year Kmart is making costume selections a ton easier with their Kostume Kreator. This fun online tool allows you and your kiddos to browse through popular costume selections using various categories like fairy, scary, or superhero. You can add accessories that are also available at Kmart stores and Kmart online to enhance the costume, I personally love wigs. The most fun part though is that your kid {or even you} can easily upload an image of their face and be transformed as they find themselves with a custom background and their face on the costume they’ve created with the Kmart Kreator.

Miss A and I had fun browsing through the costumes and adding our own personal touches to fit her personality.

Here’s what we came up with:

MommyBKnowsBest-kmart-kreator-postcard Isn’t she adorable?? Now we have to make one for Lil’ C!!

Want to have some fun planning for Fall? Check out the Kmart Halloween section for some adorable decorations for your home and make sure you grab the kids and head over to the Kostume Kreator to pick your child’s Halloween costume or just to have some fun. Would love to hear how yours turned out!

Using Kmart’s Kreator is helping me create a fun and memorable Halloween for my family. Try it for yourself! Find all your Halloween needs at Kmart’s Halloween Shop.

Pumpkin Spice Hershey’s Kisses Review

Being pregnant this time around I’ve had the weirdest cravings, maybe because I spend a good amount of my day-to-day in the grocery store, or maybe because this little one wants different things.

Little “Miss A” and I perused the Halloween Candy aisle to stock up our own pantry and fill our own bellies, sorry Trick-or-Treaters, your time will come. We stumbled upon several different kinds of holiday Hershey Kisses including, but not limited to, the Candy Corn and Carmel Apple but what intrigued me most for my recent preggo cravings was the Pumpkin Spice. Mmm sounded delish.

Once we got home and the car was unloaded, I was very excited to break into this bag and much on these creative holiday candies. In an attempt to show you the insides of the Pumpkin Spice Kiss check out this fun photo.

I assumed as most Hershey Kisses it would be chocolatey, my favorite! But instead it is more of a pumpkin white chocolate mixture. Now I love love love sweets and chocolate and again perhaps it’s my maternity taste buds, but I found this treat by itself to be a little too sweet. I would suggest these to go best on top of sugar cookies or maybe in some hot cocoa or coffee to take the sugary “edge” off the sweet treat.

Overall, a tasty once and a while treat that can (Pumpkin) Spice up your desserts but not something I would snack on regularly, perhaps that’s why it’s a limited edition item.

If you’re a fan of Hershey Kisses, grab some here:
