Why You’ll Want to Read a Book about Trash {Guest Post}

All children are recyclers at heart. They are inventors, creators and magicians when it comes to re-using things lying about the house. An old towel becomes a cape, boxes are space ships or racing cars, an empty soda bottle makes a super submarine and a cardboard tube is a pirates telescope. When children look at the world of waste they see endless possibilities.

At Retrash we can totally relate to that wonder of creating things from unwanted waste. Retrash is a book all about reusing waste to create beautiful pieces of art and practical items. It inspires creativity and imagination through stories of upcycling, recycling and living sustainably.

The book, show cases over 80 artists from all over the world who are looking at waste in new and creative ways.

This gorgeous dress and others like it are the work of Australian designer Danette Rowse, and are made by recycling fabrics found in charity shops including table cloths and pillow cases.

“I am inspired by my desire to make comfortable, versatile and quality clothing for children.” says Danette.

Robyn Stewardson creates these beautiful owls using found objects, mainly kitchen utensils which are assembled using wire.

“I have been an avid op-shopper for years and thrive on giving something discarded a new lease on life. Now visiting op shops and trash and treasure markets is a must to find the materials I need to create my ever expanding parliament of owls.” says Robyn.

10 year old Olive Reichel makes ‘Miss O’s’ off cut bears using fabric off cuts from her mum’s design studio.

“I really, really, like making teddies. I get inspiration from random things everywhere and I like basing my ideas on pictures in my head.”

Brady-Anne Cushing creates hand made products from fabrics that are repurposed or salvaged.

“We gather our materials in many ways (salvage shops, remnants left over from friends, home decor projects, yard sales, etc.). We enjoy the challenge of finding unique materials in unconventional ways. We take great pride in the quality of our original items and create them with strength and integrity to bring years of
enjoyment!”
says Brady-Anne.

I believe that Retrash can inspire a small step for change and I am passionate about getting his book into the world.

SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Review

I am a member of the SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Parent Council and receive admission to cover media events.

SEA LIFE Aquarium Charlotte-Concord North Carolina Review MommyB

Being on the SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Parent Council I’ve had lots of opportunities to check out the progress of Charlotte, North Carolina’s newest, family-friendly attraction. I must say when I heard SEA LIFE was coming to our area I was thrilled, and after visiting with my family earlier this week, I can still say I’m thrilled.

Overall we enjoyed our visit, learned lots of exciting facts about the sea life that we saw, and had fun doing it.

Some fun things you want to know about SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord:

SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Kids Love Learning Review MommyB

They make learning fun.

When you arrive, children receive a passport which is their, ticket to learning about the world under water. This passport encourages children to engage in the very interactive displays around the aquarium and they even get rewarded at the end if they get all of their stamps at the, “Dive Stations“.

All around the aquarium are signs pointing out cool facts about individual tanks and exhibits. My girls loved trying to figure out how many species of manta rays SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord had {we won’t give away the answer.}

This is one of the most interactive aquariums I have seen. Not only can children touch and explore Caribbean Hermit Crabs, Pencil Urchin, and varieties of starfish {to mention a few}, but there are ipads located at exhibits so that children can learn even more details about what they are looking at. We really enjoyed the Cabarrus River exhibit and learning about the underwater life that’s in our very own “backyard”.

These are just a few ways our girls were soaking in learning about God’s awesome underwater creations.

SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Kid Friendly Review MommyB

They cater to kids.

Talk about kid-friendly, first off, the aquarium is open and spacious and gives you the opportunity to spend as much or as little time at each exhibit as you like. Everything is kid-level. We appreciate that the attractions have viewing windows that are easily accessible to smaller children so they don’t miss out on any of the fishy-fun.

Nothing that I noticed was scary or too loud for little ones. I personally think that preschoolers to grandparents would love SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord because it has something for everyone. Aside from the awesome exhibits and tanks full of amazing underwater creatures, SEA LIFE also has a coloring area and climb-and-play station at the end of your visit.

SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Cares and Educates Review MommyB

They care about the world.

It’s very apparent as you walk around the exhibits that SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord takes great pride in educating not only about the species of sea and freshwater life, but also in educating attraction goers on the environmental status and concerns that some of the sea life featured face.

We learned how seahorses are used in Chinese medicine even today, and that more than 70 million sharks are killed for their fins every year, not to mention many more, heartbreaking facts. We even got to vote on what species we want SEA LIFE to focus their donation efforts on at the end of the exhibit.

I know it’s not always smiles and rainbows talking about how not-so-great things happen in our world, but very important to educate our children as to why this is wrong {age appropriate discussions of course}. I’m very thankful that SEA LIFE doesn’t shy away from these issues and wants to help prevent them.

Now that you’ve heard about our experience, check it out for yourself!! Be sure to check out my other post on SEA LIFE for more details: SEA LIFE Charlotte-Concord Announces Opening

Passion for Cleaning – REDLEE/SCS Inc.

This post is brought to you by REDLEE/SCS.

When it comes to cleaning, many of us probably do not have a passion, rather we do it out of necessity. That is not the case for the Redfearn family, founders of REDLEE/SCS Commercial Cleaning, there is a true passion that’s been handed down generation to generation.

Redlee SCS LogoThis family-owned business focuses on quality service, and heart behind the business. In 1982, Chief Strategy Officer Christi Redfearn’s grandfather {Charles} and father {Chuck} put their heart into their work and have only grown more in love with their jobs.

Both men are still very active with the business and have even been known to go on-site to walk through with property managers, and even to roll up their sleeves and clean on occasion.

Their heart for giving back to the community and others is even bigger than that for the business. REDLEE/SCS hosts charity events and fundraisers that benefit and give back to so many others including veterans, animals, children, and of course their own employees in need.

Having a heart for business, and a heart for others really shines through in their quality service. Not only is their focus on sustainability, but they work with property managers to discuss recycling options, offer green cleaning, and day cleaning which saves energy and helps save money as well.

Commercial Cleaning

REDLEE/SCS commercial janitorial services currently serves 11 states, with account managers available 24 hours a day 7 days a week. REDLEE/SCS regularly services the following establishments: car dealerships, schools, commercial office spaces, bank branches, museums, medical buildings, retirement homes, religious centers, fitness centers, corporate headquarters, and more.

Going Green One Baby Step at a Time with Care to Recycle™ Program

This is a sponsored, information post.

How many times have you or your family been guilty of tossing an empty roll of toilet paper in the trash? Where did the baby shampoo bottle end up after it’s last use? I know I am one of many, who although I try to recycle in our home, end up tossing bathroom recyclables in the trash.

Did you know:

While 7 out of 10 Americans say they consistently recycle, only 1 in 5 routinely recycles bathroom items, according to a recent report commissioned by Johnson & Johnson Family of Consumer Companies

To help raise awareness and influence behavior, Johnson & Johnson is launching: Care To Recycle™, a recycling campaign that begins with a gentle reminder to recycle more items from the bathroom.

Recycle Bathroom.jpg

I know with us it’s easier to throw bathroom recyclables away than to make the extra {small} effort of taking it downstairs to recycle. I believe that remembering the importance of recycling in every room in our homes is a great step towards our efforts to be green.

CFAHF_Type-01-01

While shopping the other day, I heard a cashier and the customer behind me scoff at my recyclable bags because it took longer to bag up my items. Instead of discouraging me, I remembered why I take small steps and that not only am I doing my part, but hopefully inspiring others as well.

In the same token, the Care To Recycle™, {the first recycling campaign to be hosted exclusively on Tumblr,is aimed at creating awareness about the importance of bathroom recycling but it doesn’t just stop there, it too wants to inspire change by providing helpful resources, including clear information and tips about which bathroom items can be recycled, so really it takes a lot of the “guesswork” out of the picture making it that much easier and hopefully more desirable too.

Please take a minute to check out this short video, “Smallest Room”.  May it encourage you and your family to show your commitment to taking steps towards a green home and recycling in the bathroom and share with others.

To find out more about how you can go green one baby step at a time, starting with the “smallest room” in your home, visit Care To Recycle™’s Tumblr site here: http://caretorecycle.com/

In the meantime, if you have any bathroom recycling tips to share leave a comment here!

Rubbermaid’s Handy 2-in-1 Recycler {Giveaway} [CLOSED]

Rubbermaid Logo

Rubbermaid Logo Rubbermaid is up to some great things lately. As you may or may not already know Rubbermaid gives families storage and organization options whether you’re putting leftovers away or storing sweaters away during the summer.

This time, Rubbermaid is headed straight for the recycling and trash, in a good way! Rubbermaid has come out with this handy 2-in-1 Recycler. For a family like ours who recycles a lot {not everything, but a lot} we really love having this recycling system. The Recycler comes in most handy when we have people over.

2in1-silo-new-largeRecently, I had a few friends over for a play date where we had snacks and drinks. Often times when we’ve had parties or friends over the recyclables and trash end up in one big garbage can, {boo}. However, now that we have the 2-in-1 Recycler it’s easy to let friends know where to put their cans and bottles and where to dump their plates of food. We decided to put stickers on our recycler that would signify which bin was which for our guests so we didn’t have to constantly remind or hover over the recycler, it worked perfect! (Not an actual picture of our recycler since the stickers are a little smaller and not as visible, but you get the idea.)

We love that both bins have thick handles, that make it easy to carry the bins straight to our city regulated recycling bin. DaddyB’s favorite feature is the LinerLock™ in the lower bin so the trash bag stays put, hooray for easy clean-ups.

The Rubbermaid 2-in-1 Recycler also features:

  • A Sleek design
  • Removable lid
  • 5.8 gal sorting bin
  • 7.4 gal tilt out bin with Liner Lock™ handles
  • Total capacity = 13.2 gal
  • Perfect for multi-stream or single stream recycling

I like my 2-in-1 Recycler and think it comes in so handy that I figured you would want one too. So I’m giving away a recycler to one lucky reader!!!

A Happy Green Life Natural Laundry Wash {Guest Review}

A Happy Green Life Logo

A Happy Green Life LogoDuring the last 1.5 years of my cloth diaper journey, I’ve tried at least five different brands of cloth-safe detergent.

Most recently, thanks to Mommy B, I had the opportunity to try several scents of A Happy Green Life’s natural laundry wash.

A Happy Green Life (AHGL) was started by two moms who cloth diaper their babies. They wanted a detergent that’s safe for the diapers and worked well for their husbands’ uniforms (one husband is a professional chef and the other is in the military).

Their laundry wash is made from naturally occurring chemicals and compounds – sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate and sodium percarbonate. They offer laundry washes scented with synthetic fragrance oils as well scents made with 100% natural essential oils.

Immediately upon opening the package containing the detergent samples, I was overwhelmed by the strong smell, particularly from the synthetic blends. I tend to be somewhat sensitive to strong smells and AHGL’s scents are so strong, they actually made me sneeze when I opened them. Even now, as they sit beside me as I write this review, they are irritating my nose a bit.

Having said that, the scents do smell good – including Monkey Farts, Bite Me, and Lavender Apple. AHGL offers more than 20 scents. My laundry room actually smells fantastic with the detergent sitting in there.

A Happy Green Life Laundry Wash

After washing, my clothes and diapers didn’t seem to retain such a strong scent. Some of the scents I could lightly smell after washing and some I couldn’t smell at all.

What really impressed me about AHGL’s laundry wash is how well it took the chlorine smell out of swimsuits and towels that sat overnight because we forgot to put them in the washer.

One challenge with cloth diapering is that detergent can build up in your diapers and cause stink issues. AHGL seemed to rinse well from our diapers and clothing and got them fairly clean. Stains remained on some diapers that were heavily soiled, but that’s common with most cloth diapers. I haven’t found a detergent yet that takes out all the staining. A quick way to get rid of stains (cloth diapers or any clothing) is to put them out in the sun while they’re wet. You’ll be amazed how well it works!

Like all cloth-friendly detergents, AHGL’s laundry wash does not contain optical brighteners, phosphates or soap.

You can find A Happy Green Life laundry wash and additional products they offer on their website and through select retailers. A 50/100 load bag costs $10, which seems to be on the lower end of what many cloth diaper-safe detergents cost.

Jamie BioAfter a 13+ years PR/communications career, Jamie K. recently took on her most challenging job yet – as a fulltime CFO (chief family officer). Currently, she lives in Alabama with her husband, an officer in the Air

Force, and her toddler son and infant daughter. She’s a big fan of deal sites, attempts to be eco-friendly, and struggles daily with the great balancing act of being a super mom.

Although products were provided for this review, the opinions expressed are my own and were not influenced in any way.

i play. and Green Sprouts Review, Discount, and Giveaway

i play. green sprouts

i play. green sproutsHave you heard about i play., inc.? They are a company local to Asheville, North Carolina {woohoo} offering great kid products like really cool compressed diaper wipes, sweet organic baby clothes, unique toys and more and if you’re looking for a great company that cares about keeping kids healthy inside and out. i play. is it. i play. was founded in the early 80’s and continues to be concerned with protecting both our kiddos and the planet we live on. They pride themselves on researching and early elimination of harmful resources like PVC, BPA and Petroleum from their products.

In fact, here is a list of materials that i play., inc. currently uses on their products:

Inside

• Natural, non-petroleum materials such as plant starch, plant fiber, wood, and cotton

While there are a lot of fun things on their site I would love to fill my home up with {and just may}, we were able to test out a few things that i play. and Green Sprouts have to offer.

My favorite product that we received was a cute PINK Waterproof Insulated Jacket that is not only adorable, but made with an incredibly soft microfiber that I could rub all day long, so I know it’s comfortable for Baby C’s sensitive skin too. I love the velcro pieces on this jacket that help adjust to your child’s size. My only wish – that they made them in sizes larger than a 4T so Little Miss A could coordinate too.

i play. is also great about having lots of winter separates to add on or remove depending on the temperature and occasion. Check out their full line of outerwear:

Overall I love what i play., inc. is doing with their Green Sprouts and i play. line and can’t wait to see what else is coming up for them. I am definitely eyeing the summer swim and eye wear already!

sweetriot for your Sweetie on Valentine’s Day {Giveaway CLOSED}

Sweet Riot Gifts

I have admitted several times in my blog that I am a chocoholic, there is no hiding it, I have no shame. In accordance with my habits, my husband typically gives gifts that include the delicious treat from the cocoa tree, that’s right CHOCOLATE.

Since February has arrived I’m sure you knew a sweet-treat post was coming. Well folks, this is it. {For today at least.} More about V-day and even the history of giving chocolate as a gift.

SweetRiot LogoI was approached by sweetriot, a fun company of x people that really care about chocolate, but more importantly they care about how their chocolate is made, and that’s why they are adamant about their Fair Trade policy.

First of all, we consider what products we are creating. Are they good for the world….are they healthy…are they natural and fairly traded? Is the sourcing ethical? We worked very hard to find a partner in South America with a strong track record of social responsibility and a commitment to fair trade. Plus, we searched for a product – cacao – which comes from the most healthy & magical fruit in the world. It is a slow not fast food and we’re proud of that.

As you have seen from some of my posts like: Reverse Trick-or-Treating and Chocoley Chocolates Fair Trade, I too believe in the cause of Fair Trade. Please don’t get me wrong, we certainly are not purely a “Fair-Trade home”, because we enjoy other brands of chocolate as well including those you can easily pick up at a drug store, or grocery. However, when I have opportunities to and am able to use this platform for great causes and benefits I do.

sweetriot Bars come in three different flavors:

· 60% dark chocolate riotBars with nibs

· 70% dark chocolate riotBars

· 85% dark chocolate riotBars

I was able to try three of sweetriot’s candy bars and while I am a milk chocolate lover, I do still enjoy a good dark chocolate here and there. Personally, since I am not a huge fan of dark chocolate, my favorite was the 60% with cocoa nibs. If you are a dark chocolate fan however, I encourage you to try each flavor out and better yet, buy some for the chocolate lover in your life for a special occasion that’s coming up, {you know it’s almost Valentine’s Day right?}
