Keep Your Sanity During Holiday Travel

As an ambassador for Rayovac I have been compensated for this blog post. All thoughts and opinions on the products are my own.

Travel during the Holiday season can be a bit overwhelming. Add some children (maybe even a bitty baby), maybe a pet, inclement weather, traffic, construction, and the stress level can be almost unbearable. Trust me, I’ve been there!

Here are some tips on how my family stays sane during Holiday travel, {hope they come in handy!}:

Keep Your Sanity During Holiday Travel MommyB

It’s electric! Boogie Woogie.

{great now I have that song stuck in my head} Seriously though, we’re not HUGE screen time parents on your average day, but a 4+ hour trip, especially those longer than 10 hours call for some sort of electronic play, at least in our car.

This can be tricky though for several reasons, but here are a few tricks to keep a handle on the situation.

1. Charge EVERYTHING up before you leave. The night before or the day of your trip get your charge on.

2. Bring extra batteries. I recommend Rayovac Alkaline batteries because they’re a trusted brand name AND hold charge just as long as their competitors plus they’re a lower price, great for energy sucking travel toys. **

3. Set time limits on electronics (don’t let the kiddos play on screens for several hours on end or you’ll have crabby kiddos).

** Rayovac has some great coupons available for even greater savings on their already low priced products! Head to the Rayovac Facebook page to unlock them!!

MommyB Happy Traveling Baby

Baby Love

1. If possible, it’s best for someone to sit next to baby. It’s easier (and safer) than stopping the car or trying to reach back.

2. Plan for several stops for feeding and changing.

3. Consider buying a car-safe musical toy or mobile to keep baby entertained on the ride. Bring some extra batteries just in case!

Game Plan

Decide ahead of time what games and activities you’ll bring or use to keep the kiddos occupied.

1. Of course this varies by age, but we like to bring mini dry erase boards for them and us to write words, draw pictures, and do math problems {bonus points for fun learning}.

2. Other great activities for kiddos are counting cars (choose a color and get counting), car bingo (find great printables on Pinterest), I spy, and any versions of animal, mineral, vegetable (we use nouns – person, place, thing).

3. Plan to stop at interesting places along the way. It can be planned (preferably) or impromptu, but this will give the whole family a break and if it’s an activity something fun to do, and if it’s just a beautiful scenic rest stop something to talk about on the rest of your trip.

What tips and tricks do you use to keep your sanity during Holiday travel?

Whatever you come up with for your family’s travel plans, just make sure you enjoy it. Not every second will be the most fun or memorable, but taking the good from what can be mundane is what truly builds up our family time.

Safe travels this Holiday season!!!

3 Awesome Science DVDs for Kids

My girls both love Science and learning about the world and nature, {even if they’re not fond of bugs.} In fact, we just had a great trip to Discovery Place Charlotte for Miss A’s birthday where we were learning about jellyfish, gases, and creating some cool recycled works of art.

While we will be visiting lots of museums and parks this Summer, I know there will be some moments {especially with packing for the new house and the move itself} where we’ll need some downtime. I found 3 great DVDs from NCircle that are both fun, and educational. {My favorite combination.}

3 Awesome Science DVDs for Kids MommyB

The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!: Space is the Place

Join the Cat in the Hat on a trip into space, and learn why the cosmos is such a cool place! In this new DVD, the Cat and his friends visit each of the planets, the sun and the stars. Young viewers can learn why day turns to night thanks to our friend, the sun.

Sid the Science Kid: What is a Rainbow?

After a rainstorm, the sun comes out and Sid spots a big rainbow in the sky. He races inside to tell his parents, but by the time he brings them outside to see it, the rainbow is gone. Sid and his friends investigate rainbows at school where they discover that rainbows can only form when light passes through water droplets.

Your kiddos will learn the answers to the questions: Where does light come from? How are shadows made? How are rainbows created? What causes darkness?

Octonauts: To the Gup-X!

OCT_To the Gup-X_3D-RGB

This DVD includes the following exciting adventures: Captain Barnacles leads a mission to rescue Dashi, who is trapped inside a giant whale shark; Kwazii takes to the skies to retrieve a precious book from a school of flying fish; Peso tries to bandage a Great White Shark without becoming his lunch – and much more! Plus, in a special extra feature, Tweak & Tunip tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the Gup-X!

Both my girls {ages 4 and 7} really enjoy these DVDs and have learned so much about space, rainbows/light, and sea life. These are movies that we can watch over and over again and not have to worry about questionable content or mindless viewing.

Little Pim Language DVD Review

I received two random Little Pim DVDs in order to review and post my honest thoughts on their product.

LittlePim_LogoR-FWLHave you heard of Little Pim? If not, Little Pim is a foreign language learning company that introduces children between the ages of 0 and 5 to a different languages using DVDs, music CDs, flashcards, and books.

Check out this short video:

**We were able to test out a couple of DVDs from the Little Pim collection, so please keep in mind that this review is only based on our viewing of the two DVDs and not the entire Little Pim program.

As we were watching the DVDs my girls (Lil C age 3 and Miss A age 6) really enjoyed the different characters that Little Pim has come up with. The characters themselves do not speak but are adorable and act out focus words.

The videos are geared towards children under 5 and held the attention of my 3-year-old longer than my 6-year-old, so I think the company has a good grasp on the age of their audiences.

Little Pim DVDs

The words that the videos were teaching were simple, but helpful words that I would want my girls to learn in a language program.

Again, we were not able to test the full program, but from the DVDs that we received we really enjoyed the program and I think with the activities and other DVDs included it would be a good language learning program for smaller children.

Find out more about the award-winning program by heading to their website www.littlepim.com

What language would you want your child(ren) to learn??

Superbook DVD Review

I had the pleasure of working with CBN and MomSelect to bring you this post.

Earlier this month I let you know about the new Superbook Bible Stories Summer Series, did you get a chance to watch them on CBS or ABC?? If so, leave a comment, I’d love to hear your thoughts. If not, no worries, Superbook is now available on DVD.

There are 14 DVDs in the Superbook DVD series:

In the Beginning
The Test!
Jacob and Esau
Let my People Go!
The Ten Commandments
A Giant Adventure
The First Christmas
Miracles of Jesus
The Last Supper
He Is Risen!
The Road to Damascus
***And a bonus: Revelation The Final Battle

We received 14 DVDs and I viewed them on my own since my girls can be very timid when it comes to content in movies. I am glad that I did watch the videos prior to showing them to Miss A {age 6} and Lil C {age 3}. My girls are extremely sensitive when it comes to “bad guys” in movies, and Satan is notoriously the biggest “bad guy” of them all. This series portrays a lot of imagry of Satan, throughout the Bible stories he’s a part of. Also watching some of the evil pharohs, the whale in the Jonah episode, and even Goliath would have bothered them. I did, just to be suer show them a portion of a couple of episodes I thought might be more “mild” and with their personalities and viewing preferences (and mine too) they just weren’t ready to watch the series.

I do love the way characters Chris, Joy and Gizmo start off the show and go back in time/in the Superbook and learn from Bible stories, and think that this DVD series offers valuable lessons that children of the appropriate age can appreciate, have fun with, and also benefit from.

The series is recommend for children ages 6 and up. Personally, I would say 8 to 10 years might be a more appropriate age, but that’s just my opinion.

I’m glad that I have these DVDs for when the girls are older and love that there are options out there for my children and yours to learn about the Bible in a unique way.

To purchase a copy of what could be your family’s favorite episode or to join the Superbook DVD Club head here:  Superbook DVD Club

Also, head to http://www.cbn.com/superbook for more information on the series, to check out the kid’s site and to download the Superbook App.

**Since every child is different, I encourage you to head to the Official Superbook website, {available through the website listed above,} to view some of the episodes before your children watch them if there is a question of maturity or if the content is appropriate for their personality. Disney’s Lady and the Tramp DVD Blu-Ray

Lady and the Tramp

Happy Valentine’s Day!! A day for love, romance, and having fun with those closest to you. I tried to think of, “the greatest love story of all” to share with you. I thought of writing about my own love story with DaddyB but figured it may be too epic, then I thought of sharing my love with my children and while I love them immensely it’s not quite the same love I was thinking of writing about. Then, it hit me, why not write about a couple with love that bridged the divide, a classic love; Lady and the Tramp.

I know that’s probably not what you were thinking, but for me, this Disney movie is timeless. I’ll admit it’s been quite a few years around a decade at least  since I’ve seen the movie. I remembered the general plot, but for some reason couldn’t remember the “villian.” Until I saw the box open up with the Siamese cats and then remembered the red-eyed rat that may scare some children.

Miss A is now almost 5, but she’s always been very sensitive to violence and “scary things” and was a little frightened by the movie, but I can see her enjoying it when she is older. I know many of her friends who are the same age also enjoy this, and other, more intense Disney movies. I think it really just depends on your own child.

Overall, I love this movie because I think it’s a sweet love story that shows it’s good to open up to new experiences and people. And the movie can teach about love, but it’s an innocent love that can translate to friendship as well. It’s the perfect pick for Valentine’s Day and already out on the store shelves. If you’re looking for a last-minute Valentine’s Day gift or just something fun to do with the kids, make a big bowl of pasta for dinner, grab your copy of Lady and the Tramp and enjoy watching with a bowl of popcorn for family movie night. There’s something for everyone. Be sure to visit my post with great printables, recipes, and activities here: http://www.mommybknowsbest.com/friday-fun-with-lady-and-the-tramp/

Are you watching any movies with your family for Valentine’s Day? Which one??

Friday Fun with Lady and the Tramp

Lady and the Tramp

Unbeknownst to most of you I was ill with the flu on Sunday. Full-on-flu. I was in bed right after church at 1:30pm and stayed in bed till 6:30am the next morning, mostly because my body wouldn’t let me move. I was achy all over, joints, head, back. Flip-Flopped all day and night long between being super cold and having chills and needing the fan on. No fun at all.

Lady and the Tramp

Needless to say I’m still recovering, each day I’m feeling better and was so blessed to have hubby home on Sunday so that I could stay in bed and not have to take care of the girls in my poor condition. I figured today would be a nice opportunity to post something fun, that the family could enjoy, yours and mine.

And if any of you aren’t feeling well, need a break, or even want to color and have fun with your kiddos here are some great activity pages from the movie Lady and the Tramp. This great, classic movie hit store shelves this Tuesday on DVD/Blu-Ray! I love that all the great movies are starting to do this because I enjoy watching films that hold special meaning and memories to me and the fact that I can now share that with my girls is priceless.

So here you go, feel free to print, and if you want to take a picture and add it on my Facebook page that would be incredible and totally make my day. It may just make my sickies go away all-together!!

Here’s a little preview of one of the coloring sheets (there are several, but this one is super cute!!) Click on the links to the right for the PDF versions and print out for hours of fun!

SparkPeople – 28 Day Boot Camp DVD {Guest Review}

SparkPeople 28 Day Boot Camp

SparkPeople 28 Day Boot CampWe’re several weeks into the New Year – have you stuck with your resolution to exercise?

I’ll admit, I haven’t been consistent, but I’m making more of an effort. With a 6 month old and a 2 ½ year old, it’s not always easy to get to the gym.

Workout DVDs are a great option for home and the shorter they are with an effective total body workout, the better.

Thanks to Mommy B, I had the opportunity to try 28 Day Boot Camp with SparkPeople’s Coach Nicole.

SparkPeople.com is a free online resource that allows you to plan meals and track nutrition, find recipes, watch exercise videos, and much more. Coach Nicole, a certified personal trainer and exercise instructor, is an editor and fitness expert at SparkPeople.com.

Coach Nicole has a calm, straight forward approach to cueing you for each move and motivating you to stick with it. I know from personal experience that’s how she really is – I took some spinning classes that she instructed.

What I like most about Coach Nicole and the two ladies who are in the 28 Day Boot Camp video is that they are real. They look fit and healthy and you can relate more easily to them than the super fit, extremely thin women that often appear in exercise DVDs.

The DVD includes Coach Nicole’s 28 Day Plan which outlines how many minutes and the intensity in which you should work out along with the type of exercise (cardio, cardio-sculpt, tone and burn, and total body challenge). You simply go to the calendar and the appropriate day and play the workout from the calendar.

Or you can mix and match the workouts how you like. The DVD is set up so you can choose each of the segments individually for a 12-, 20- or 30-minute workout as well as a warm up and cool down. Check out a few clips from the SparkPeople – 28 Day Boot Camp video:

28 Day Boot Camp is one that can work for anyone. Coach Nicole and the two trainers in the video show you the moves at three different levels – beginner, intermediate and advanced. You can modify the moves to continue challenging yourself as you become more fit (or to make yourself work harder if you’re already in great shape). The only equipment needed are hand weights and a mat.

The background music is almost monotonous and doesn’t interfere with your ability to follow the DVD. I almost wish it was a bit more energetic to encourage me to keep moving. Also, there’s a clock on each segment that tells you how much time you have left. I have a love/hate relationship with counters like that – it’s nice to know how much longer you have but it can also be distracting.

Most of the moves seem fairly uncomplicated and include the usual suspects – squats, crunches, side steps, kettle-inspired moves, etc. Be careful not to overexert yourself though – there is one move that involves positioning your legs to the side and turning into the move. That particular move caused me to aggravate my lower back which resulted in pain for several days (disclaimer – I tend to have lower back pain issues that flare up here and there). Just listen to your body and choose the appropriate effort level.

Also included with the DVD are eight recipes (baked lemon rice, blueberry flaxseed muffins, and miso vegetable soup among others), tips to burn more fat and seated ab exercises (you can sneak a little exercise in while you’re working or watching TV).

Overall, I enjoyed the video and plan to include it in my rotation of home exercise DVDs. It’s a little lighter on cardio than some other videos I’ve tried, such as Jillian Michaels, but it has a great combination of cardio and sculpting moves. It also seemed that the instructors “rushed” through some of the moves and I found it difficult to keep up with their pace at times.

Regardless of which workout I selected, I found myself lightly sweating and experiencing that little bit of muscle soreness the next day that lets you know you worked hard, but didn’t overexert yourself.

You can find 28 Day Boot Camp ($16.99 list price) at Target and other retailers as well as Amazon. Visit SparkPeople.com here: http://www.sparkpeople.com to get a $3 coupon to purchase the DVD at Target.

NCircle Winter Wonderland Christmas DVD Giveaway {CLOSED}

The Wiggles

We are a television watching family. The girls have random times throughout the day when we watch television or DVDs. One time they watch is when I am doing their hair. Because they have such curly hair it takes me anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes per girl and television is the best way to keep their beautiful, heads still. A few shows we like to watch are The Wiggles, for their singing and dancing of course,  The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!, which is a newer show that the girls love to giggle at, WordWorld, which I love because it teaches spelling and teamwork, Chloe’s Closet, is one of Miss A’s favorites because of make-believe play and The Fairies, the latest kids’ sensation from Australia, which surprisingly Baby C adores and says “fairies” when we turn it on.

When I was offered the opportunity to watch, review, and give away this 5 DVD holiday collection of some of our favorite shows from NCircle, it was right up our alley.

The WigglesThe Wiggles, “It’s Always Christmas With You!,” includes a mix of 14 original new tunes and seasonal favorites. It’s the first holiday DVD in seven years from the beloved platinum-selling band from Down Under, and it features celebrity guests including ‘N Sync’s Joey Fatone, who sings a sweet rendition of “O Holy Night.” We love it because it introduces children to the diverse ways different cultures celebrate the holidays and The Wiggles are always good, clean, fun.

“The Cat in the Hat Knows A Lot About That: Told From the Cold” DVD has four episodes from the popular PBS Kids series. Actor-comedian Martin Short is the voice of The Cat in the Hat, and I love his characters in movies. The four episodes on this learning-and-fun-filled DVD are: Snowman’s Land, Flight of the Penguin, A Long Winter’s Nap and Reindeer Games. The girls really liked the episode on the penguin named Percy and learn how to waddle like a penguin and love to sing along to the easy songs.

My favorite DVD is “WordWorld: New Happy Holiday WordFriends”. The show is an Emmy Award-winning PBS Kids series for obvious reasons. This DVD features three holiday-themed episodes: The Christmas Star, A Christmas Present for Dog, and Duck’s Family Reunion – plus a bonus music video, Dancing Dog. I love how the characters demonstrate that it is better to give than receive. Great messages to be had in this DVD for sure.

The DVD that Miss A requests the most is: “Chloe’s Closet: Winter Wonderland”. The DVD features four episodes: On Frozen Pond, Best in Snow, Getting to Snow You, and Icing Escapades. Miss A loves that the girls turn into snow princesses and make snowflakes and also one of the episodes features Chloe ice skating, pretty nice since we don’t get much of the white stuff here in Charlotte, North Carolina.

FairiesLastly, “The Fairies: Christmas Wishes in Fairyland” is a DVD where Fairyland is transformed into a magical Christmas setting. Tiny tots will sing and dance along to their favorite Christmas carols {and some of mine too} and learn new songs as they celebrate the joys of the season with the beautiful fairies, Harmony and Rhapsody! I love that my girls can learn traditional Christmas carols through this DVD.

Overall we are pleased and love every one of these DVDs and think they are great for the Christmas/Winter-y weather season and I highly recommend them for long trips or even short moments of fun for your kiddos. They would even be great for a holiday movie viewing party since there are no scary parts, no questionable moments, and some good messages for our kiddos.

The Gruffalo – A Movie Review

The Gruffalo DVDAs soon as I heard The Gruffalo was coming out on DVD, I knew for sure I’d have to check it out. There are a few books that were my childhood favorites and I still hold dear, and this was one.

Although I couldn’t actually remember the full story I knew as soon as I started watching I would be reminded of the plot. I watched with my 4 year-old and 1.5 year-old and we are very cautious of movies because our oldest is very sensitive to material that could be perceived as “scary”.

For Miss A and Baby C the movie was appropriate. I was amazed at the quality of animation in The Gruffalo DVD. Seriously, from the little details to the perspective of the movie I was very impressed. Read More

Readeez Volume Three {Guest Post}

Readeez LogoLast weekend I tried out a new learning tool for my 4-yr old son, Jeremy. Jer is the kind of kid who devours books and has an appetite for learning that rivals even my nerdiest days in high school. So needless to say – I was really excited when MommyB invited me to do a guest review on Readeez.

When I brought the mail in – my son immediately gravitated to the fun exterior of the Readeez Volume 3 DVD case. He was all over me asking if that was for him. I explained it was a teaching tool to help him learn to read and even though it was Saturday morning, he gladly gave up watching cartoons (he never does this) to switch to Readeez.

Readeez Volume ThreeAs a mom – you’re always excited to watch your child’s reaction to something new. Even though this particular DVD – Volume 3, was a bit over his level – he loved every bit of it. Jer is a music lover. In fact he informed his dad and me that he wants to be a rockstar. The Readeez DVD was just up his alley. I watched him rock out to the cool tunes and sing along while learning. I was shocked to realize he remembered the math portion later on at dinner. He just randomly blurted out what 4+4 was. Needless to say – I quickly became a fan too.

If you’re a parent who loved Schoolhouse Rock. Get on this! It has a similar feel and the music is super cute without becoming stuck in your head. Your kids can have fun learning without feeling that they have to sit still. Personally – I plan to check out their Pre-K offerings so he can start at his level and move up.

Final verdict from our household of 4…eight enthusiastic thumbs up!

To check out some great video clips, other DVDs and CDs from Readeez or to purchase your own copies head over to the Readeez website here: http://www.readeez.com
