Creating a Relaxing Summer Morning Routine

“I’m sharing affresh® in my life as part of a sponsored series for Socialstars™ #affresh

If you read my previous post on Summer Schedule for the kids you’ll know we like a mix of schedule and flexibility in the summer. Some mornings we sleep in and other mornings we have to get up early for play dates or errands, but we always make time for breakfast and that includes a delicious cup of coffee for me.

To make things run a little more smoothly in the morning I use our daily magnets to set up how our day will look so the girls will know what to expect for the day first thing in the morning.

If we are going to a play date or the pool I’ll also get any items we will need, like snacks, water bottles, pool toys or towels ready the night before so we can just grab and go. That ensures that we’re not running around trying to find items last minute and also equals less stress for everyone.

I find for me, preparing things the night before helps us to not feel rushed eating breakfast and allows us to enjoy our mornings together.

Since I drink coffee every day I want to make sure my coffee maker is fresh and clean and honestly I don’t want to spend a lot of time doing that when I’d rather be playing board games with my girls or taking them to the park.

I love the affresh® Coffeemaker Cleaner. It is a speciality cleaner designed to work specifically with coffeemakers. That means it is compatible with multi-cup and single serve brewers, cleans hard water deposits and mineral build-up, and it’s super easy to use. There’s no need to mix, measure or stir, I just drop in a tablet and let it do the work. {One of my favorite things is that my whole house doesn’t smell like vinegar after it’s done cleaning.}

Here’s just how simple it is:

How to use for multi-cup coffeemakers:
  1. FILL the reservoir with water to max level
  2. Drop 1 tablet into reservoir. (For coffeemakers with covered reservoirs, fill the brew pot with water and dissolve 1 tablet in the brew pot, then pour solution into water reservoir)
  3. RUN 1 brew cycle (or ‘clean’ cycle if applicable) into brew pot.
  4. DISCARD dirty water from brew pot and then fill reservoir with fresh water to max level
  5. RUN 1 brew cycle using fresh water then discard to rinse the coffeemaker.
How to use for single serve brewers:
  1. FILL the reservoir to max level. Drop 1 tablet into reservoir.
  2. RUN 2 brew cycles selecting largest cup size, discarding dirty water between brews.
  3. DISCARD remaining water from reservoir. Fill reservoir with fresh water to max level.
  4. RUN 2 additional brew cycles and then discard to rinse coffeemaker.

Or as I like to say fill, drop, fizz, bubble, brew, clean!

No matter what machine you use to brew your coffee, you can’t beat a virtually hands-off cleaning product, especially when it comes to some coffeemakers that make it tricky to clean thoroughly. So if you’re dreaming of easy summer mornings and a fresh cup of coffee, affresh® Coffeemaker Cleaner may become your favorite cleaning product.

If you have a busy summer like us affresh® cleaners provide so many quick cleaning options that will allow you to spend less time cleaning and more time enjoying your family. Purchase your affresh® cleaners HERE.

10 Things I Heart in Winter

I know it’s not “officially” Winter yet, however the things I love all have to do with Winter or the Winter season, so I’m posting my 10 Things I Heart in Winter.

10 Things I Heart Winter MommyB

Here we go!

1. Warm coffee, yummo!!! Here are my favorite varieties:

    • On-the-go –  Starbucks, (My favorite is Hazelnut Macchiato with soy milk)
    • At home – Real Cup Coffee, they have awesome coffees and teas that work great with my Keurig and both hubby and I love. I personally love flavored coffee (see above) and for the Winter season they have a great Winterfest flavor.

Real Coffee MommyB

    • For stocking stuffers – Craft Coffee’s Coffee DNA Project™, if you know a coffee lover this great coffee subscription features coffees you probably won’t find anywhere else in a great sampler size (not too small not too big). Answer some questions, customize or get their recommendations.

2. The Spirit of Giving.

I reviewed and posted about this awesome book last year – The Sparkle Box Book Review and we fell in love. Without giving any of the storyline away the book encourages families to do for others. It not only gives a great incentive to have a giving spirit, but it reminds us what Christmas is all about. I love seeing our sparkling box this time of year and love that my girls desire to fill it up with good deeds for others. Hope you check it out!

3. Smiling Faces, Fun Experiences, and Cute Pets.

Where do all those things appear?? Instagram. Yep, I heart Instagram. Probably my most loved version of social media. It’s less controversial than Facebook can be at times and rather than all the words on Twitter I can see fun, sweet, beautiful pictures that embody the lives of family, friends, and coworkers (aka other bloggers and pr companies).

Recently I received an opportunity to check out #Cube™. Basically it’s a large 8” square LCD touch screen display, that taps into Instagram. #Cube™ delivers real-time and instant continuous delivery of a stream of photos and video clips, has built-in Wi-Fi, free wireless software updates, and is rechargeable. You can put #Cube™ anywhere in your house and move it around easily because it’s wireless (and really cool too.)

If you know someone who would love this as a gift, or want to buy it for yourself (that’s okay too), head to hashtagcube.com/#cube and for a $15#cube discount use coupon code: CUBE71 at checkout (affiliate link).

4. Christmas Cards

I love making our Christmas Cards each year, but even more so I love receiving them. We’re thankful for any cards we receive this time of year, but I’m especially partial to those with pictures of beautiful families, awesome couples, fun kids, awesome babies, and sweet pets. This month we’ve already received a bunch and I can’t wait to see new ones that come each day and hang them up.

5. Elderberry

Each time we get sick (which I feel like for a family of four isn’t too often, but often enough), I have a couple of dear friends who remind me the power of Elderberry. Well just last month I decided to get on the Elderberry train and I’m so glad I did! I didn’t realize all of the great benefits of Elderberry especially when you’re fighting an illness.

Norm’s Farms (locally in NC but ships worldwide), has an AMAZING selection of Elderberry products, that we used and loved (okay the girls didn’t like the taste but I thought it was similar to cranberry and loved it). My favorite product is their Elderberry Extract which is great for boosting your immune system, and has 2 times the amount of antioxidants than blueberries. They also have some great jellies and jams you’ll want to check out as well.

Norms Farms Elderberry MommyB

I also found some Elderberry products in health stores like lozenges that included zinc which I’ve heard is also another great, homeopathic way to treat a cough/cold. So don’t put it off like me, try Elderberry and then come back and thank me when you fall in love too!

6. Gettin’ Crafty.

Now that my girls are older, they want more hands-on activities and learning opportunities that a coloring book just won’t achieve. We often keep recycled materials in a bin in their “kids’ office” but we also buy science experiment kits, and craft sets.

We were able to try CreatorBox, a built-it-yourself subscription box that includes a new toy each month. The box comes complete with instructions and quality materials and feature some really cool things you wouldn’t normally think to create like a trebuchet/catapult, paper airplane launcher, and smart house.

For us, this was a great project for the girls to do with DaddyB because I often work on arts, crafts and projects with them, but due to DaddyB’s work schedule the quality time he does have is on the weekends. We saved our catapult for the girls to put together with him and they had a blast with it! I highly recommend this for great family bonding, and learning too!

7. Holiday Shopping

We don’t go big for Christmas presents but we do buy each of our girls 3 gifts (want, need, read) and this year we also bought most of our family 3 gifts as well (one thoughtful gift, one gift card, and one handmade gift). While at a recent BJ’s Holiday event, my assistant Lil’ C and I were introduced to quite a few great gift sets and learned a little more about BJ’s Wholesale as well.

Though we were members for several years, mostly buying diapers and paper products, I never realized how much larger BJ’s Wholesale is than their competitors, carrying more than double typically. They also have a great charitable foundation that gives back to the community and each store also participates in several outreach opportunities throughout the season including an angel tree. Did you know that???

Here are some of the great gifts for two-legged family and friends (and some four legged ones too):

BJs Holiday MommyB

8. Fun Movies

I love fun winter and Christmas movies, don’t you? The problem with fun movies though is that there are so many to choose from, so I’m gonna try to keep my list simple. Try is the operative word people. In no particular order:

  • Elf, for obvious reasons.
  • Iesodo’s new JOY themed video
  • The Grinch (good lessons in here)
  • Home Alone (and Home Alone 2 but if I have to pick, I’d go with the first one)
  • Any Veggie Tales Christmas, Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas, Saint Nicholas is a great one to teach your kiddos about who St. Nicholas really was, and the Ultimate Christmas Collection has a bunch of great holiday DVDs in one great set.

9. Goodies

Yep, it’s the season of candy and sweets, cookie exchanges, and delicious stocking stuffers. One of my favorite places to pick up sweet treats for my family is CVS/pharmacy. They have the usual treats like candy canes, gold coins (which I always put in the girls’ stockings), and other great candy bars, nuts, and trail mixes to name a few, plus the sales and prices are….awesome.

10. You!

The biggest thing I love this Winter is you!! I always try to remind you, my readers, that I’m so thankful and blessed to have you stopping by my site, reading, and sharing my posts. I hope that you have a great winter, a Merry Christmas and of course an awesome New Year. Thank you for being so amazing for yet another year end. I heart you!!!

10 Things I Heart about Summer

Have you been soaking in the summer? The girls, DaddyB, and I have been enjoying our summer moments although Miss A returns to school in less than a month. Crazy right!??! Here are 10 Things I Heart about Summer:

10 Things I Heart about Summer MommyB

1. Ooey Gooey yummy S’mores – though we have yet to enjoy one of these summer staples we’ve had fun checking out recipes online, and talking about how each member of our family likes their marshmallows cooked. (I’m a golden brown gal.)

2. on the flipside we also like Healthy Snacks like CVS/pharmacy’s new Gold Emblem Abound line. They have yummy raw almonds that our whole family enjoys, Fruit & Nut Fiber Trail Mix and more and best of all they’re free of artificial preservatives and flavors. I’m also loving Bear Naked bars that I recently found in Target, so yummy and all-natural ingredients.

Things I love about Summer MommyB

3. We love visiting Local Museums and Attractions year-round, but especially in the summer because there are some pretty cool new exhibits. Discovery Place has Alien Worlds & Androids and, Sea Life Charlotte-Concord has their new Serpents of the Seas exhibit, both are included in the price of admission.

10 Things I Hear about Summer Science & Museums MommyB

4. Speaking of museums, we’re also loving science projects! My little science lovers and I have been busy making perfume, edible science experiments, playing with dry ice, and checking out STEMpowerkids subscription kits.

5. With the move we’ve been making a few purchases for our home office, living room and girls schoolroom {aka kids’ office}. One place we’ve almost literally been living at is Ikea (some for item returns and some for purchases). The girls also tried Small Land the last time we went (being overprotective parents we were a little apprehensive, but they had a blast and we were able to zip around the store and get what we needed, super convenient.) During our Ikea trips we also spotted Hobby Lobby which I had seen at other locations but assumed it was a craft store so never wandered in. Let me tell you I love the home decor and the girls found these GINORMOUS flowers that are way cool, we’re considering putting some in their playroom, but don’t tell the girls!!

10 Things I heart about Summer Ikea & Hobby Lobby

6. Though it hasn’t been as hot as last summer (even though there’s still time here in the Carolinas), it’s been a little muggy here and there so keeping cool is definitely on our things we love about summer and there are lots of ways to keep cool this summer. If you need to replenish electrolytes check out PowerIce (sort of like frozen Gatorade), for the healthy families you will want to grab Ruby Rockets ice pops that are made with veggies and fruits (your kids may need to get used to the different taste, but just like anything that’s healthy they’re a great alternative to the sugars, and dyes in other ice pops. Aside from frozen treats, we also love letting the kids run through the sprinklers, going to the pool, and bringing our Arctic Cove personal cooling misters. We took our manual mister to the 4th of July festivities and I was super impressed with how easy it was to use and how cool it kept our entire family, plus the price on these are awesome!

Cold Treats for Summer MommyB

7. Iced coffee is my favorite in summer, although who are we kidding, I like iced coffee in the winter too. I’m not a huge hot drink drinker are you?? I have heard there are two local places that rock the caffeine flavor (and I have yet to try myself): Cabbarus Creamery has great coffee ice cream and King of Pops has some cool coffee ice pops too.

Iced Coffee Frappe Summer MommyB

8. This one isn’t quite for the entire family but I’m loving the new beauty products that are out this summer, specifically the natural lines. My favorites are  Greenplicity, california naturel, and Soapbox.

Greenplicity has awesome products made from food-grade materials. We love, love, love the citrus cocoa lotion bar (Miss A loves the smell), it’s safe for kids and easy to apply, and the body butter is awesome as well and has lavender scent, great for bedtime.

california naturel is a line inspired by…you guessed it, California; sun, sand, and sea. They have great skin care products, but my favorite is the sunscreen. My only wish is that they would have something without Zinc Oxide since Lil’ C is allergic, but I’ve found it difficult to find especially in natural products.

I love Soapbox products for many reasons, but number one being that they are a brand that gives back. Soapbox is what I would call a one-for-one company like Toms, but they partner with homeless shelters, food pantries, and orphanages and give back soap, water development, vitamins to save lives. Not to mention their products are made in America, 100% recyclable packaging, Paraben free, Sulfate free, Gluten free and the list goes on. I really, truly heart this brand! (I hope you will too.)

9. Friends! People are very important to us and though we’ve moved and don’t get to see certain people as often as we’d like, we still love hanging out and keeping in touch with “old” friends. We also love making new friends, which we are doing quite a bit of with the move and new schools coming up in August. So blessed to have some amazing people in our lives and watch the girls form friendships independently as well.

Summer with Friends MommyB

10. Going on roadtrips!!! We love to travel, although this year, with the move to our new house we knew we wouldn’t be traveling as much as last Summer with Myrtle Beach, Busch Gardens Williamsburg, going to the beach with my mom and sister, visiting Historic Williamsburg, and the list goes on! We’ve actually been pretty quiet and exploring our own little area, we visited downtown Concord (North Carolina) last weekend and love the little shops and eclectic variety of people there. We also hope to make another trip to Tweetsie Railroad before school starts, but if not before the season ends.

There you have it, some of the things I heart about summer! What do you like best about summer? Any favorite memories or traditions? Products that you love? Trips that you’re headed on?? Can’t wait to hear!!!

This is not a sponsored post, I was not paid by any of the companies or brands listed above however I have received some of the above products to review at my discretion and any opinions given on the products are my own honest thoughts.

New Coffee Brewing Technology – Remington iCoffee Review

I don’t know whether you’re a tea drinker or a coffee drinker, or neither, but I’m definitely a coffee drinker. It wasn’t until December of 2012 that I really would consider myself a full-fledged “coffee drinker”.

Typically I brew my cups of joe with a single-cup coffee maker and choose exotic flavors since I like my coffee sweet. I love both big name coffee retailers Dunkin’ Donuts and Starbucks, but being from the North I miss Tim Horton’s and would die for the day that Tim Horton’s and Wegmans moved to North Carolina… {just in case anyone is listening}.

Recently, I had the opportunity to test out iCoffee, a coffee maker that uses “SteamBrew™ technology to create “impossibly smooth” tasting coffee”. Please keep in mind I am a “coffee drinker”, but not a, “coffee connoisseur”.

Remington iCoffee Review by MommyBKnowsBest

Things I like about iCoffee:

[crosslist]

  • Little to no assembly. I took the packaging off the product, added the filter to the coffee carafe, and plugged in. {After that you can set the clock, and brew or schedule a future pot of coffee.}
  • Technologically cool product. My girls loved the sounds of the brewing system and the fact that you could see the ground coffee brewing inside the machine.
  • Optional filter to remove any fine coffee grounds. You don’t have to buy filters for the iCoffee so that’s a little less waste than the single-cup coffee makers and traditional coffee makers as well.

[/crosslist]

Things I didn’t like about iCoffee:

[badlist]

  • Harder to brew a single cup of coffee. Just like a traditional coffee brewer, yes you can brew just one cup of coffee, but it’s not as convenient as making a whole pot, especially with the filter system.
  • Clean-up is a pain. I’m grateful for the reduced waste that iCoffee offers, but at the same time clean-up is definitely more work with the iCoffee filter system.

[/badlist]

Overall thoughts:

  • We try not to have too many large appliances on our countertops, but I must say that the iCoffee is about the same size as my single-cup coffee maker although it seems larger because of the shape of the brewer.
  • The iCoffee is said to brew the coffee in a unique way using SteamBrew™ technology to extract a smooth coffee taste and remove the bitter, acidic flavor, honestly I brewed a few cups, because I couldn’t figure out the water to coffee ratio (suggestions from the company would have come in handy), and didn’t notice a substantial difference in traditionally or single-cup machine brewed coffees. {Again with my single-cup I opt for flavored coffees and did not use a flavored coffee for this review.}
  • Price point for iCoffee is similar or a little less than some single-cup brewers on the market, and if you’re looking for something different iCoffee definitely is that.

I would say unless you are a coffee connoisseur or are gifting this to someone who is, it may not be worth the money to purchase the iCoffee since you may not notice the difference or taste the crema smoothness that iCoffee is said to deliver.

Have you ever tried a steam brew type coffee brewer? Do you think you would like the iCoffee?

I received an iCoffee to review for the purposes of this blog post. All opinions expressed in this review are my own, honest thoughts on the product. Your opinions may vary.

Sweeten Up Your Valentine’s Day with a Delicious Date-Night Strawberry Smoothie

Let’s face it, Valentine’s Day is about sweethearts and all things sweet. Whether your sweeties are your children, a spouse, or a significant other ’tis the season to treat them to some love-filled goodies.

I love SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener in one of the other loves of my life, coffee. Did you know though that although SPLENDA® is awesome as a beverage sweetener you can also use it for all sorts of things.

SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated can be used almost anywhere sugar is used, including cooking and baking. It measures cup-for-cup like sugar, but contains 678 calories less than sugar on a cup-for-cup basis. One teaspoon of SPLENDA® No Calorie Sweetener, Granulated contains the sweetness equivalency of one teaspoon of sugar with no calories or carbohydrates.

Here are a couple of sweet ideas for you to use this Valentine’s Day to treat your loved ones:

Replace another sweetener with SPLENDA®. While you’re making your heart-shaped cookies and rich chocolate fudge swap out your normal sweetener for SPLENDA®.

Create an awesome Date-Night Smoothie or daiquiri to share with your sweetie using this recipe:

Strawberry Splenda Smoothie

1 1/4 cups your favorite orange juice
1 cup plain non-fat yogurt {I love greek yogurt if you want a thicker smoothie}
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/4 cup ice cubes

Blend all ingredients until you reach desired consistency.

Or if you’re snowed in this winter. Check out my recipe for Snow Cream and as a healthier version consider using skim milk, almond milk, coconut milk or soy milk and SPLENDA® to sweeten up the taste. This is a great, sweet treat to enjoy and snuggle up with your Valentine.

Torani Flavored Syrup Saved My Coffee

Torani Logo

Coffee DrinkingRecently I became a daily coffee drinker. In previous years I would drink an occasional frappucinio {which I just learned the correct spelling of tonight}. Normally I will have my Diet Coke with or without caffeine, really I drink it for the carbonation and flavor. However I just can’t bring myself to drinking it in the morning, but still need a little caffeine boost after working late at night on my sites and projects and getting up early with the girls.

Coincidentally, there is a Dunkin’ Donuts on the way home from Miss A’s school, and even though she doesn’t go to school far from home it’s a quick pick me up, and they have drive-thru. What more could I ask for {other than a Tim Horton’s in the South, but that’s another post.}

I have however, been trying to be more frugal with my spending and don’t brew my own coffee, {wishing for a Keurig}, so I found Starbucks VIA on the shelves at my local Super Target. They have iced coffee packets, hooray!! I found the slightly sweetened version which worked, added a little bit of natural creamer and again it was decent, and gave me the little pep that I needed for my day. And then, I found Torani Syrups…{cue heavenly music}…

Torani Logo

I got to try out Torani in Hazelnut flavor and Sugar-Free Pumpkin Pie, and also got some coupons that I gave to my church’s coffee outreach program, which they were very thankful for.

As you can see here, I made my concoctions of deliciousness with my Starbucks VIA, a splash of Torani Hazelnut flavored syrup, and Coffee Mate Natural Bliss {and a yummy blueberry muffin.}

Torani Collage

I loved my Torani Hazelnut flavor. The first time I used it though I had no clue how much to add and definitely went a little overboard and my coffee ended up pretty sweet, and I like sweet coffee to begin with. But once I got my “recipe” down by eyeballing it I loved the taste and what Torani added to my regular cup of coffee. I would recommend using less to start off and adding more to taste.

I also got to try out Torani’s Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice syrup, but I am not a huge fan of Sugar-Free products in general and this remained true in my taste-test of this sugar-free flavoring. If you don’t mind splenda or need sugar-free products for health reasons I think it’s great that Torani has so many Sugar-Free flavor options for you to choose from, just not my cup of tea coffee.

Torani Flavored Syrups are available at:

  • Cost Plus World Market
  • BevMo
  • Walmart
  • Smart and Final
  • Most major grocery stores
  • Amazon.com (wide assortment of flavors)
  • Torani.com and Shop.Torani.com (widest assortment of flavors)
And guess what??!?! You can get 10% off right now when you enter the code “shespeaks” at torani.com at checkout.

Birthday Bash – Sweet Tooth Unique Confections & Gifts

Sweet Tooth LogoFrom the first moment I walked into Sweet Tooth: Unique Convections & Gifts, I felt like I was at home in my hometown at a quaint cafe. I not only love the relaxed setting but the shop has so may great dimensions from Sweet Tooth’s own yummy treats to the cozy book corner, and even some amazing local crafts and gifts.

I really feel at home with I am at Sweet Tooth, perhaps because Sweet Tooth is a family-owned business. Located off Route 77 in Huntersville, North Carolina,  shop owners and parents, Sean and Diane Cox, make sure every customer is a satisfied one. They really make you feel like you’re one of the fixtures rather than a customer with dollar signs all over them, {that would look pretty funny wouldn’t it?}.

At Sweet Tooth, you will be tempted by such treats as DeLuxe ice cream, a variety of coffee and espresso drinks made from freshly-roasted Dilworth Coffee beans, a wide selection of SUGAR FREE items, and an array of both health-conscious and sinfully- sweet freshly-baked pastries.

Sweet Tooth is a great place to go to for your birthday party needs, they created these amazing owl pops for Baby C’s party made from moon pies, chocolate sprinkles, M&M’s, and white cookies. I was thoroughly impressed with the look for the finished product!

Sweet Tooth Huntersville Owl

Sweet Tooth not only makes great creations for parties, but they also have a party room, on-site that customers are able to rent out, while not a great location for a child’s party it would be great for teens and up!

If you’re in the area, I recommend you go check out Sweet Tooth’s warm shop and be sure to tell them MommyBKnowsBest sent you!! Find them here: http://www.sweettoothhuntersville.com/

What’s your favorite sweet treat for birthdays?

I received samples from Sweet Tooth in order to complete an honest review of their products. This in no way changes the opinions expressed in this post. The opinions in this post are mine and mine alone. Your opinions may vary.

POMx Iced Coffee Drinks Review and Giveaway {CLOSED}

POMx Iced Coffee TrioAs you read my title I bet you’re wondering why POM Wonderful, the company known for it’s healthy, delcious pomegranate juice would have anything to do with an iced coffee drink. I was thinking the same thing when I saw POMx Iced Coffee on Twitter.

Calling themselves the “Healthy Buzz,” I had to try it out, plus I’m insane for iced coffee although I try not to drink too much caffeine with nursing Baby C. Their marketing is also a bunch of hilarious sheeps that say, “For maximum Wakey-wakedness,” and, “It doesn’t taste like pomegranate.” The funny thing is that I actually thought it may taste like pomegranate and prepared myself. Even though I love POM Wonderful juice I just don’t know how it’d go over in an iced coffee.
