Dora’s Christmas CD

Dora The Explorer is ringing in the Holidays with her fun CD, Dora’s Christmas. This holly, jolly CD features Christmas Classics like “Deck the Halls”, “Jingle Bells”, and “Feliz Navidad”. Also included on this snowy sensation are Bonus Tracks from Dora’s Holiday Movie Dora’s Christmas Carol Adventure. You’ll want to make sure Swiper doesn’t swipe this CD!
Along with fun tunes on this Sony Label album, kids will enjoy the great bonus content also on this disk. Bring fun wall papers, lyrics, and a Dora’s Christmas Carol mini video to life using a computer CD drive.
This CD’s insert features the usual song information, but also includes a festive Feliz Navidad/Christmas game board and pieces. For those of you not wanting to cut your insert please note there is a great printable version in the Bonus Content.
For those of you looking for the more traditional versions of well-known Christmas songs, you’ll have to look elsewhere. When I first listened to the CD with my daughter, I was expecting the songs to be the original version but of course sung by Dora.
Dora incorporates fun friends from her show into her songs relating to the kids who follow her show. Dora’s version of “Deck the Halls” mentions some of her best friends, “See Boots the Monkey jump before us. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la Big Red Chicken joins the chorus. Fa-la-la-la-la, la-la-la-la.”
As expected Dora also includes great learning opportunities by including Spanish into many of the songs on this album including “Here Comes Santa Claus.”
“Here comes Santa Claus, Aquí viene Santa Claus, To visit me and my friends, Everyone’s waitin’, anticipatin’, As his sleigh comes round the bend. Bells are ringin’, Boots is singin’, All is merry and bright. So hang your stockings on Nochebuena, ‘Cause Santa Claus comes tonight.” I’d expect nothing less from this Hispanic sweetheart.
If your child is a Nickelodeon fan they will adore this exciting CD not only because it features voices from Dora the Explorer, but also friends from The Backyardigans, and Go, Diego, Go!
Kids will recognize the “Dora The Explorer Christmas Theme” which is a jingle bell filled version of the original Dora Theme song. Parents will love that it features the Young People’s Chorus of New York City.
After I got over my initial shock of the “Dora-fied” words, my daughter and I were dancing around the living room enjoying the upbeat song, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree”. So if you’re like me you may want to listen to the album once through, sample it online, and once you buy it just have fun with your kids. Dora’s Christmas is a really fun CD for kids who love Dora the Explorer to be able to enjoy Christmas with singing, and silliness.

Quick and Easy Holiday Teacher Gifts {Guest Post}

Cheap Holiday Gifts

If you haven’t met Stacy, she’s kinda crafty, which explains her blog She’s {kinda} Crafty. I met Stacy at Bloggy Boot Camp Atlanta and found out that she also lives in Charlotte – just like me, has two girls – also like me, and is crafty – {like I wish I was}.

Thus the reason I asked Stacy if I could feature one of her posts on MommyB Knows Best. I love crafting, Etsy, and all things creative, however I even though I think I can be semi-crafty I just don’t have time for it. Boo!! But I can live vicariously through others right?? Are you the same way or are you really, truly crafty?

For some kiddos, this is the last week/half-week of school so if you’re looking for easy, last-minute gifts for the amazing people who care for and teach your children I love this Peppermint Hot Cocoa craft/recipe:

I saw this cute recipe online at My Recipes and thought, why not! I bought the jars at Hobby Lobby while they were half off (so $1.25 each), the powdered milk ($10), sugar ($?? I can’t remember but it wasn’t much, just a 4 lb bag), 3 containers of unsweetened cocoa powder ($2.50 each), 2 bags of mini choc chips ($2 each) and 1 bag of brach’s peppermint candies ($2.29) so around $35 for 8 gifts (plus tags and ribbon). I think they came out adorable but it was a little touch and go in the beginning. I found that using a 1/4 cup measuring scoop was the easiest way not to get powdered milk, cocoa, and sugar ALL over my counters. I first tried using a funnel but that was a colossal fail!

Cheap Holiday Gifts

Once they were all assembled I added a little square of fabric I cut out using my pinking shears under the cap (I used Ball Jars) along with some ribbon and a tag I made for the gifts that include the directions on the back. In case you are looking for a last minute teacher or neighbor or family gift I have included the tags below, you can right click on them, save them, and print them. I cut them out using my paper trimmer, glued the 2 sides together, and used a hole punch so I could attached them with the ribbon.

10 Things I Heart in Winter

I know it’s not “officially” Winter yet, however the things I love all have to do with Winter or the Winter season, so I’m posting my 10 Things I Heart in Winter.

10 Things I Heart Winter MommyB

Here we go!

1. Warm coffee, yummo!!! Here are my favorite varieties:

    • On-the-go –  Starbucks, (My favorite is Hazelnut Macchiato with soy milk)
    • At home – Real Cup Coffee, they have awesome coffees and teas that work great with my Keurig and both hubby and I love. I personally love flavored coffee (see above) and for the Winter season they have a great Winterfest flavor.

Real Coffee MommyB

    • For stocking stuffers – Craft Coffee’s Coffee DNA Project™, if you know a coffee lover this great coffee subscription features coffees you probably won’t find anywhere else in a great sampler size (not too small not too big). Answer some questions, customize or get their recommendations.

2. The Spirit of Giving.

I reviewed and posted about this awesome book last year – The Sparkle Box Book Review and we fell in love. Without giving any of the storyline away the book encourages families to do for others. It not only gives a great incentive to have a giving spirit, but it reminds us what Christmas is all about. I love seeing our sparkling box this time of year and love that my girls desire to fill it up with good deeds for others. Hope you check it out!

3. Smiling Faces, Fun Experiences, and Cute Pets.

Where do all those things appear?? Instagram. Yep, I heart Instagram. Probably my most loved version of social media. It’s less controversial than Facebook can be at times and rather than all the words on Twitter I can see fun, sweet, beautiful pictures that embody the lives of family, friends, and coworkers (aka other bloggers and pr companies).

Recently I received an opportunity to check out #Cube™. Basically it’s a large 8” square LCD touch screen display, that taps into Instagram. #Cube™ delivers real-time and instant continuous delivery of a stream of photos and video clips, has built-in Wi-Fi, free wireless software updates, and is rechargeable. You can put #Cube™ anywhere in your house and move it around easily because it’s wireless (and really cool too.)

If you know someone who would love this as a gift, or want to buy it for yourself (that’s okay too), head to hashtagcube.com/#cube and for a $15#cube discount use coupon code: CUBE71 at checkout (affiliate link).

4. Christmas Cards

I love making our Christmas Cards each year, but even more so I love receiving them. We’re thankful for any cards we receive this time of year, but I’m especially partial to those with pictures of beautiful families, awesome couples, fun kids, awesome babies, and sweet pets. This month we’ve already received a bunch and I can’t wait to see new ones that come each day and hang them up.

5. Elderberry

Each time we get sick (which I feel like for a family of four isn’t too often, but often enough), I have a couple of dear friends who remind me the power of Elderberry. Well just last month I decided to get on the Elderberry train and I’m so glad I did! I didn’t realize all of the great benefits of Elderberry especially when you’re fighting an illness.

Norm’s Farms (locally in NC but ships worldwide), has an AMAZING selection of Elderberry products, that we used and loved (okay the girls didn’t like the taste but I thought it was similar to cranberry and loved it). My favorite product is their Elderberry Extract which is great for boosting your immune system, and has 2 times the amount of antioxidants than blueberries. They also have some great jellies and jams you’ll want to check out as well.

Norms Farms Elderberry MommyB

I also found some Elderberry products in health stores like lozenges that included zinc which I’ve heard is also another great, homeopathic way to treat a cough/cold. So don’t put it off like me, try Elderberry and then come back and thank me when you fall in love too!

6. Gettin’ Crafty.

Now that my girls are older, they want more hands-on activities and learning opportunities that a coloring book just won’t achieve. We often keep recycled materials in a bin in their “kids’ office” but we also buy science experiment kits, and craft sets.

We were able to try CreatorBox, a built-it-yourself subscription box that includes a new toy each month. The box comes complete with instructions and quality materials and feature some really cool things you wouldn’t normally think to create like a trebuchet/catapult, paper airplane launcher, and smart house.

For us, this was a great project for the girls to do with DaddyB because I often work on arts, crafts and projects with them, but due to DaddyB’s work schedule the quality time he does have is on the weekends. We saved our catapult for the girls to put together with him and they had a blast with it! I highly recommend this for great family bonding, and learning too!

7. Holiday Shopping

We don’t go big for Christmas presents but we do buy each of our girls 3 gifts (want, need, read) and this year we also bought most of our family 3 gifts as well (one thoughtful gift, one gift card, and one handmade gift). While at a recent BJ’s Holiday event, my assistant Lil’ C and I were introduced to quite a few great gift sets and learned a little more about BJ’s Wholesale as well.

Though we were members for several years, mostly buying diapers and paper products, I never realized how much larger BJ’s Wholesale is than their competitors, carrying more than double typically. They also have a great charitable foundation that gives back to the community and each store also participates in several outreach opportunities throughout the season including an angel tree. Did you know that???

Here are some of the great gifts for two-legged family and friends (and some four legged ones too):

BJs Holiday MommyB

8. Fun Movies

I love fun winter and Christmas movies, don’t you? The problem with fun movies though is that there are so many to choose from, so I’m gonna try to keep my list simple. Try is the operative word people. In no particular order:

  • Elf, for obvious reasons.
  • Iesodo’s new JOY themed video
  • The Grinch (good lessons in here)
  • Home Alone (and Home Alone 2 but if I have to pick, I’d go with the first one)
  • Any Veggie Tales Christmas, Merry Larry and the True Light of Christmas, Saint Nicholas is a great one to teach your kiddos about who St. Nicholas really was, and the Ultimate Christmas Collection has a bunch of great holiday DVDs in one great set.

9. Goodies

Yep, it’s the season of candy and sweets, cookie exchanges, and delicious stocking stuffers. One of my favorite places to pick up sweet treats for my family is CVS/pharmacy. They have the usual treats like candy canes, gold coins (which I always put in the girls’ stockings), and other great candy bars, nuts, and trail mixes to name a few, plus the sales and prices are….awesome.

10. You!

The biggest thing I love this Winter is you!! I always try to remind you, my readers, that I’m so thankful and blessed to have you stopping by my site, reading, and sharing my posts. I hope that you have a great winter, a Merry Christmas and of course an awesome New Year. Thank you for being so amazing for yet another year end. I heart you!!!

This is not a sponsored post, however I have worked with some of the above brands in various ways and received some product to showcase on my blog. Any and all opinions expressed in the above post are my own honest thoughts. Yours may vary.

Advent Ideas for the Whole Family

I know Advent has already started! I can’t believe it’s December already, not only because it was 70+ degrees here in North Carolina, but also because I don’t feel like it’s time for the end of this year. {Tell me I’m not the only one in this boat.}

In lieu of Advent, one of the most awesomest times of year that we get to celebrate the birth of Jesus and show even more love and kindness to those around us, our family likes to honor advent and count down the days until Christmas with a paper chain filled with fun activities and thoughtful acts as well.

Advent Ideas for the Whole Family MommyB

Here is our list {in no specific order} of things on our Advent chain.

  • Make a gingerbread house
  • Decorate the house {inside/outside}
  • Donate Food to a local food bank/cause
  • Make homemade presents
  • Wrap presents {with Christmas music and snacks of course}
  • Christmas Craft
  • Invite someone to church
  • Watch Christmas Movie {movie marathon or movie night}
  • Have a holiday playdate
  • Make a birthday cake for Jesus and sing Happy Birthday
  • Send Christmas Cards {kids help address, stuff, stamp}
  • Take gifts to civil servants, doctors, etc.
  • Head to our favorite botanical garden {we love Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens}
  • Visit a {live} nativity {we enjoyed Billy Graham Library’s festivities}
  • Read Christmas stories from the Bible and check out some great books our family likes to read.
  • Write a letter to Jesus {and leave it under your tree or read aloud and share as a family}
  • Go caroling with some friends in nearby neighborhoods or Senior Assisted living communities
  • Drive through your neighborhood or a neighborhood that’s known for it’s lights display
  • Make paper snowflakes and then display them
  • Help your child make or purchase gifts for their classmates {we made play dough one year}
  • Help your child make or purchase gifts for their teachers
  • Send a care package to missionaries, {we’re going to send ours to the Yon family}
  • Celebrate St. Nicholas Day, which just so happens to be my birthday. {Believe it or not the real St. Nicholas focused on giving more than receiving and so this day we plan on doing something kind for others}
  • Have a secret Santa with family or friends but instead of giving gifts write thoughtful notes or draw pictures.
  • Have a neighborhood night in {invite neighbors for yummy food and great fellowship}

Again, those are only a few ideas and the ones we’re using this year, it’s easy to find other ideas online as well.

I’d love to hear if you celebrate Advent and how you celebrate it. Also let me know if you decide to use any of these ideas too!!

Matthew 1:21 “She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Happy December!

To Fairy or Not to Fairy

Lil’ C, who in my opinion is MUCH too young to be losing baby teeth {4 years 5 months}, lost her first baby tooth today. My heart dropped a couple of months ago when the dental hygienist said she had two wiggly teeth. My baby, growing up, and this is one of the major physical milestones. I couldn’t believe it.

Lil C Lost Tooth

Even though Miss A has lost several teeth hers didn’t come out quite so soon. Then again do we ever really feel comfortable with our kids growing up?!?

For the first lost tooth in our house we celebrate, the Tooth Fairy brings a small gift instead of money, because it’s a big deal you know?!

The big questions is: To Fairy or not to Fairy.

To Fairy or Not to Fairy - Teaching your child about holidays

While Miss A knew the Tooth Fairy wasn’t real we haven’t told Lil’ C about her true identity yet mostly because we didn’t realize she would lose a tooth this soon, plus we want to make sure she can keep that secret from other kiddos whose parents want them to believe.

We have several friends on both sides of the fairy fence. Some friends get really creative, some do not celebrate at all, some celebrate but in a unique way, and then some fall in the middle like we do with playing make-believe but the kids know in the end it’s us helping them celebrate in what we feel a fun way.

If you haven’t decided how you want to approach this with your kiddos, here’s our point of view only and be sure to take all into consideration.

We often play make believe and dress up in our home, and by often I mean on a 20-minute cycle, these girls ADORE dress up! So when deciding if we wanted to do the tooth fairy it really fell into that category.

When it comes to other holidays  like Christmas, we tell the girls about how Saint Nick was a real man and we focus on that story of the spirit of giving. At Christmas they get a few meaningful gifts from us, but we ultimately celebrate Christmas as Jesus’ Birthday, same with Easter, we don’t do Easter baskets or bunny, but we do have a few fun faith-based activities coming next Spring to celebrate and honor what Easter means for us.

When do the girls REALLY get to celebrate??? Lots of times, including missing teeth, we celebrate them on their birthdays’ that’s totally their day, we also celebrate milestones like first day/last days of school, and have impromptu glow stick parties and dates with our kiddos, trust me, these girls {and their parents} know how to make some awesome memories.

So if you ever feel that telling your kiddos the truth about the Tooth Fairy and other holidays will spoil the fun for them, it really doesn’t have to. And if you don’t tell your kiddos that’s fine too. There are so many great ways to celebrate special occasions and the day-to-day as well.  Let’s make our family time together the best it can be!!

Consider sharing how you and your family celebrate to give other new families, or families trying to decide their traditions ideas.

Top 10 Uses for Blankets All Year Long

Not sure if you’ve been following my Instagram posts lately, but today I posted a video of snow…yes, it’s the end of March…yep, I live in North Carolina.

I know it’s been an insane Winter/Spring for everyone around the Nation, and while I’m used to having some snow in the Spring having grown up in Southwestern NY, the weather this year baffles me. Luckily though, my girls have been keeping warm since we received their INSANELY soft, adorable, personalized blankets.

American Blanket Company was kind enough to send one blanket for each of the girls to try out and they were personalized with their names and a heart. LOVE!!!

American Blanket Company Review MommyB

With what started as a fine women’s apparel business in 1964, the rich heritage has continued and resulted in the birth of the American Blanket Company in 2012. American Blanket Company’s products are hand made in Massachusetts are are 100% satisfaction guaranteed.

The blankets arrived in the most adorable boxed packaging and the girls were very excited to see what their surprise would be. In an instant they pulled their Luster Soft Fleece Blankets out of the boxes wrapped themselves up in the pretty soft pink blankets.

DaddyB and I could not believe how soft these blankets were. Words like “not humanly possible” and “must be against the rules” were a few phrases uttered regarding the amazement of their texture. The embroidering looked well made also, and was perfectly placed in one corner so the girls knew which blanket was theirs.

I would highly, highly recommend American Blanket Company if you’re looking for a gift, yours will be the one that will be talked about and remembered, whether it’s for Birthday, Baby Showers, Anniversaries, Christmas, or for you it’s great that it can be personalized and an amazing quality. Well worth the price.

If you’re thinking you only need a blanket when it’s below zero degrees outside, think again. Here are my Top 10 Uses for Blankets All Year Long:

Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes & More Charlotte

Living in Charlotte, I have many opportunities to work with amazing people. I fully enjoy working with those who use their talents and businesses for good and Ines Aranguren at Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes & More is one of those amazing people.

Ines is a very talented baker and artist. Usually you find a cake that will taste great, but look okay or taske okay and look great. This is not the case with Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More. I have had the pleasure of working with Ines on a local event, tasted her delicious treats at birthday parties, and most recently was able to share one of her fun creations with my daughter’s class.

This beautiful Christmas/Happy Birthday Jesus cake, complete with fluffy snow frosting, colorful Christmas trees and of course by request, baby Jesus in a manger was made specifically for Miss A’s class party by Ines from Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More.

 SkystheLimitChristmasCakeCollageMommyB

Not only was everyone impressed with how amazing this cake looked but parents and students alike were digging in for a piece {or two!} and everyone wanted Sky’s the Limits’ information. I of course was happy to recommend because I believe in great businesses, doing good things for others, and that are more than professional in their field of work and Ines and her husband are just that.

Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More is known for their gorgeously decorated wedding cakes, and have been nominated for several awards including the Wedding Wire Couple’s Choice Awards for 2014, and theknot.com’s 2013 Best of Weddings. While she rocks at wedding cakes, Ines excels at anything she does and does not limit her skills to any one dessert type. If you check out her Facebook page you can see beautiful fruit tarts, delectable pies, and scrumptious cookies.

The creations that Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes & More design are above and beyond what you could imagine. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Ines’ realistic looking flowers and intricate designs will blow you away.

Be sure to head to her website for more examples of her work, cake and frosting flavors and prepare to be amazed! skysthelimitcake.com

Miss A’s class received this cool cake from Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More and while I am not obligated to write a blog post for them {at their request}, I can’t help but share with you about brands and businesses my family {and many others} truly enjoy.

Christmas Tree Cakes with NEW Cake Boss Cake Mixes and Frostings {Giveaway}

Let the baking begin!!! Tis’ the season to be baking, whether you’re headed out to a party or making baked goods as gifts, for most of us, this time of year our ovens are warm and the mixing bowls are out.

I enjoy baking at Christmas time and seeing people try my *hopefully yummy treats. {I have been known to win an award or two for my yummy cookies.} I think this love for baking comes from my mom, who enjoys making cookies and fudge around the holidays to give to neighbors and friends.

Recently, I was able to try out some of the brand NEW cake mixes and frostings from Cake Boss. In honor of the holidays I figured I would make something festive so I came up with a yummy Christmas Tree Cake:

Christmas Tree Cakes Made with #cakeboss products.jpg

To make my Christmas Tree cakes with Cake Boss Cake Mixes and Frostings, I wanted to add a surprise in the middle and since we’re celebrating Jesus’ birthday so I thought the, II’S YOUR PARTY cake mix was appropriate. The kids loved seeing the bright colored confetti in their cakes. We also kept the cakes simple by using the VIVA VANILLA frosting, since most kids like vanilla, and it’s easier to decorate or even change the color.

Using the 6-Cup Round Cakelette Pan, I baked my cakes, although I filled it a little too high, I would recommend for this project to fill the wells to half, the higher the cakes bake the more you will need to cut off to create a level “tree” bottom. {Although if you want a tasty snack or to use for cake pops or other treats, that may not be a bad thing.}

The frosting is made with real vanilla and palm oil so for me it was different than the usual store-bought frostings and I really enjoyed the flavor and texture.

Christmas Tree #cakebosscake Collage

Obviously, I’m not a frosting whiz, or a professional baker, but what my decoration skills lacked, these cakes made up for with their light and super moist taste. The moms were raving about the taste and I think I may have found my new cake mix and frosting for the holidays.

When it comes to a great tasting cake, it starts with the right ingredients. Each cake mix comes with a pouch of bakery crème – Buddy’s secret to making velvety moist cakes. The cake mixes are available in six delicious flavors: VA VA VELVET,IT’S YOUR PARTY, DECADENT DEVIL’S FOOD, CHOCOLATE TRIFECTA, PRIMO YELLOW, and DIVINE WHITE.

MixesFamilyShot_LowRes

CAKE BOSS Frostings are premium frostings give you a taste experience you would expect to find at Buddy’s bakery. Made with high quality ingredients and zero trans-fat, the frostings pair perfectly with Cake Boss cake mixes. They are available in four indulgent flavors: WHOLE LOTTA CHOCOLATE, VIVA VANILLA,MEGA MILK CHOCOLATE, and CRÈME DE LA CREAM CHEESE.

FrostingFamilyShot_LowRes

In addition to the new mixes and frostings, the Cake Boss baked good line includes beautiful and delicious buttercream cakes, fondant cakes and boutique-style cupcakes with unique combinations of amazing flavors, fillings and designs. Not to mention their line of bakeware!

My Favorite Christian Christmas Books and Bibles for Families

Looking to add a few new books to your family library? Whether you want to add a couple of new Christmas books that will become life-long favorites, or if you want to be able to look at your Bible in a different way I have 4 books that you will definitely want to check out.

Christian Christmas Books

The First Christmas NightI love the variety of books that depict the birth of Jesus, there are so many great books that tell the Christmas story in their own way. First Christmas Night by Keith Christopher and illustrated by Christine Kornacki tells the story of the sweet baby in a manger, but not only through words. The beautiful images in this book come to life, so much so that Miss A asked if they were photographs. The book is simple enough for young children to understand and yet timeless, lending itself to be read year after year.

Another book that has cemented a place in our Christmas family traditions is The Sparkle Box: A Gift with the Power to Change Christmas by Jill Hardie.

If my job wasn’t to describe this book to you, I may be speechless. The story in this book is one that we have been talking about the past few months. Helping others and placing their needs before our own.

This book had moments that touched my heart so deeply that I was moved to *almost tears. I loved that Lil’ C {age 3} was following along with the story and that it enhances our desire to teach our children to have a servant heart. I won’t spoil the story, but the Sparkle Box we got from our book is now sitting on our fireplace mantle and will reappear each year without a doubt. Perhaps it can spark a new tradition in your family, too.

The Sparkle Box

Christian Children’s Storybook Bible

Do your kiddos like reading the Bible but you wish they would really get into the stories a little more? The Big Picture Interactive Bible Storybook brings favorite Bible stories to Life.

The really cool thing about this new storybook is that it features scannable QR codes highlighting videos featuring key Bible stories, narrations from Jenna Lucado, {daughter of popular faith author Max Lucado}, as well as 145 colorful illustrations depicting favorite Bible stories and even more pages full of stories your children will really get into.

The Big Storybook Bible Collage

This is a great book to read with your child and discuss.

Check out this video to see the augmented reality that The Big Picture Interactive Bible Storybook brings your family.

Christian Family Bible

CEB Study BibleThe Common English Bible released its new Study Bible on October 1. Because the CEB made the top ten translation list and has held it’s place, the’ve now introduced their Study Bible. The CEB Study Bible is a great Bible for families with children of all ages. This Bible includes historically-based notes, 210 sidebar articles, parallel verses, maps by National Geographic and five articles written by Christian scholars.

Not only does this Bible help family members understand the words of the Bible, but it also allows thought provoking discussion giving our faith feet and helping our children really understand the Word of God as they learn and grow and build their own relationship with God.
