Teaching Children How to Help Others

Disclosure: This blog post was written for The Momiverse, pursuant to their engagement by brightpeak financial. All views expressed are entirely my own, and were not influenced or directed by either the Momiverse or brightpeak financial.

As I’ve mentioned before our family has a big heart for giving our prayers, time, and money to help the needs that others are experiencing. Whether they are right in our very own city or across the world, God has called us to share what He has given us and not limit it to one zipcode.

Sponsored Child.jpg

I truly believe that showing our children how blessed they are in many ways with allow them to be more compassionate and empathetic adults. Those are qualities you can’t buy or teach from a book. Finding age-appropriate activities to help out causes we believe in is fairly easy, and so rewarding.

Most recently, we decided it would be a great idea to sponsor a child overseas. For us, we’re a semi-frugal family, we enjoy eating out, use coupons occasionally, and sell and shop consignment, however with our current bills we need to be mindful of our spending.

I know we were called to give to this little boy and his family and therefore we’ve sat down to discuss our spending habits and areas where we can cut back in order to be able to provide the donation amount we have committed to.

Here are a few ways we are saving:

– Spending less money on eating out by better meal planning

– Packaging snacks and drinks for travel instead of buying at rest stops

– Making homemade gifts for friends and family

– Using more coupons and rewards cards

– Researching kids eat free participating restaurants

I know these aren’t new ideas on how to save money, but I share our family’s efforts. If you have any suggestions that may work for us as well please feel free to leave a comment below.

In the meantime, I’d also like to tell you a little more about brightpeak financial. I love their slogan, “Live Intentionally, Learn Simply and Work Purposefully. We exist to help Christian families experience life’s journey with strength and generosity.”

They are in the business of helping people at every level of financial know-how. Topics covered on brightpeak financial’s website range from a guide to help you choose your child’s future guardian should something happen to you, {seriously something we all should be thinking about}, an article on fighting fair about money, {the number 1 thing that couples argue about}, and an entire category on money management and debt.

After navigating through brightpeak financial’s website, I found several really useful tips that I’ll be sharing with DaddyB to implement in our own family. Those tips will come in handy as we teach our girls how to help others by creating our own financial responsibility.

I am excited to share this information with you, and I truly hope you find it helpful as you look for articles and resources to help with your family’s finances.

Superbook DVD Review

I had the pleasure of working with CBN and MomSelect to bring you this post.

Earlier this month I let you know about the new Superbook Bible Stories Summer Series, did you get a chance to watch them on CBS or ABC?? If so, leave a comment, I’d love to hear your thoughts. If not, no worries, Superbook is now available on DVD.

There are 14 DVDs in the Superbook DVD series:

In the Beginning
The Test!
Jacob and Esau
Let my People Go!
The Ten Commandments
A Giant Adventure
The First Christmas
Miracles of Jesus
The Last Supper
He Is Risen!
The Road to Damascus
***And a bonus: Revelation The Final Battle

We received 14 DVDs and I viewed them on my own since my girls can be very timid when it comes to content in movies. I am glad that I did watch the videos prior to showing them to Miss A {age 6} and Lil C {age 3}. My girls are extremely sensitive when it comes to “bad guys” in movies, and Satan is notoriously the biggest “bad guy” of them all. This series portrays a lot of imagry of Satan, throughout the Bible stories he’s a part of. Also watching some of the evil pharohs, the whale in the Jonah episode, and even Goliath would have bothered them. I did, just to be suer show them a portion of a couple of episodes I thought might be more “mild” and with their personalities and viewing preferences (and mine too) they just weren’t ready to watch the series.

I do love the way characters Chris, Joy and Gizmo start off the show and go back in time/in the Superbook and learn from Bible stories, and think that this DVD series offers valuable lessons that children of the appropriate age can appreciate, have fun with, and also benefit from.

The series is recommend for children ages 6 and up. Personally, I would say 8 to 10 years might be a more appropriate age, but that’s just my opinion.

I’m glad that I have these DVDs for when the girls are older and love that there are options out there for my children and yours to learn about the Bible in a unique way.

To purchase a copy of what could be your family’s favorite episode or to join the Superbook DVD Club head here:  Superbook DVD Club

My Belated Medifast Progress – Week 14 #journey33

Ever have one of those, days, weeks, months, years *LOL* that you just feel like you’re not quite 100% in anything? That was me last week, my 14th week of Medifast. For some reason I couldn’t shake the funk. I didn’t care what I was eating, I wasn’t reading the Bible as much as I wanted or should have been, I missed some events because of the funk and other petty issues at home. Just not a great week for me.

Now as I reflect on my week I’m thinking, “what’s wrong with you?!?” I realize there were so many good spots in my week that I was too busy complaining in my heart and head to notice. For my own sake I’m going to write them here so I can learn from this.

I placed my worries about Miss A’s first sleep over into God’s hands, even being the worrier that I am.

I got to play on the playground on a beautiful day with Lil C and DaddyB.

Even though they may not add up to all my issues and frustrations from last week and may not even be directly related to Medifast, these are all periods of life that we each go through, and if you don’t have “funky moments” I need to chat with you and get some advice!!!

I decided last week not to weigh in at all because at that point I think it would have just encouraged me to quit altogether and I wasn’t having that, so I guess that’s good at least. So I hope you’ll give me a pass, everyone needs a little grace once and a while right??

MommyB's Free Pass

My biggest issues this time around with my weight loss are:

  • Figuring out what lean and green I want to eat without always eating grilled chicken and salad
  • Finding someone who I can be accountable to and who encourages me
  • Having enough willpower and caring about myself enough to change my bad habits and make good choices
  • Having the energy, between not drinking coffee, allergies, and bouts of the sickies I’ve been drained

But, life goes on, and I really do want to be a healthier person inside and out in my 33rd year of life, I deserve it. I just need to dive into finding recipes, chatting with people who are like-minded, being in my Bible and hearing what God has to say about me rather than what my thoughts say about me, and being reminded of good and bad (anything) that I can put into my life and trying to fill it up with good.

So, thank you for letting me vent, sharing my failures and successes, and I hope if you are in a funk, no matter how long it has been, that you too will find inspiration, take hold of it, and fighting for what you want.

Here are a few pictures of where I have been and I would like to get back to and maybe even beyond (sorry for the blurryness in the second one):

Mary’s Son – A Christmas Book Review

Marys Son Book Cover

Marys Son Book Cover

Often times the holidays can become a chore, extremely busy, or sometimes we just plain lose sight of what that holiday stands for. With Christmas less than one week away, stores flooded with people looking for the deals or hottest toy on the market, the rush of sending out cards before the day is finally here, and of course making sure the decorations are hung just right. That’s what Christmas is really about right?!?

I love the book, Mary’s Son – A Tale of Christmas by Darryl Nyznyk. This is a great book to remind yourself the true meaning of Christmas, whether you live in a beautiful home and are blessed with all your needs, or if you’re struggling this season just to make ends meet.

This book was awarded a Mom’s Choice Awards and if I had my say I would totally agree. I also think it would be a good book for you to read with your teenagers or even smaller children based on their maturity level.

The way the book is written, it’s an easy one to really “get into”. And even though I know the Christmas story I enjoyed reading the character’s journey and the author’s perspective.

I suggest you grab a copy of this at your local bookstore or maybe even download it for Kindle or on your smartphone and read it when you’ve just had enough of the holidays and want to be filled with CHRISTmas.

PS!!! The author is offering the e-book for only $2.99 on Amazon for the month of December 2012!

I received a copy of this book purely for review purposes. All statements and opinions are my own honest thoughts. Yours may vary, but you’re not allowed to give your opinion until you’ve read the book…as the old saying goes, “you can’t say you don’t like it if you don’t try it!!!”

Merry Christmas from MommyB

Isaiah 7:14 – “Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.”

How amazing is it to be able to see our children when they are born? It is such a blessing and a memory that we will never forget. A child is truly a blessing from God.

Miss A on her birth-day:

Miss A birth

Baby C on her birth-day:

Baby C birth

and the most important birth-day of all: Jesus Christ! How much more blessed are we at the birth of God’s son, our Savior?

Have a very Merry Christmas and be blessed in this upcoming year!! Thank you for being a part of my life this year!

Love MommyB!

From the Makers of Veggie Tales comes Jelly Telly

From the makers of Big Idea, Veggie Tales, 3,2,1 Penguins, and more fun Christian programming comes…… JELLY TELLY!!

Since my introduction to Veggie Tales at Sunday School, (as a high-schooler,) I have loved these cute crudites! Bob and Larry made me laugh while reminding me about the simple things that God is constantly teaching us. Even though these animated story tellers were geared towards children it’s easy for anyone to catch on, and end up rolling on the floor laughing.

I knew that when I had children I would want them to watch Veggie Tales too. So, I asked for the videos at each holiday and bought a few myself. Most of them are VHS but someday I’ll work towards a DVD set.

Just this year we found out that Veggie Tales are now…”On TV!!!” It’s basically a new introduction and lead into the story but they’ve kept most of the same stories to teach Sunday Morning values.

Jelly Telly is a fun website that features Christian media, including games and videos. It’s a great way to get more of the great message of the Bible to our youngsters. Co-Creator of Big Idea, Phil Vischer wants to “Bring the Bible to Life.” Not only are they providing great materials but they’re also inspiring and hiring upcoming new Christian children media designers. Which I think is pretty cool.

They have everything from animation to puppets to human actors. I feel like they have something for everyone, so if you get a chance to go to their website: Jelly Telly
check out some of the fun characters and creations.

Also for those of you Veggie fans Minnesota Cuke and the Search for Noah’s Umbrella will be released in the U.S. and Canada on DVD on July 31st in Christian bookstores and August 1st in the general market.
