Tips for Teaching your Family Safe Online Behavior

This is a sponsored post in partnership with KidGuard. Any opinions or thoughts are that of MommyBKnowsBest.

Navigating the web as an adult can be tricky, whether you’re faced with security problems, or just overwhelmed by the harsh comments on social media, it always seems like there’s something you have to look out for.

In an age like today it’s almost impossible to not be online especially for younger generations. For parents, if your child is on a social media platform or website that you’ve never seen that’s a big problem.

Remember when your child was little, you wanted to know a couple of things right?
It was important to:
  • Know where your children were
  • Know what they were doing

The same rules follow suit online.

Yes, your children are older, more responsible, however it’s still important to:

  • Know what sites and platforms they are on
  • Know how they are using social media and the internet

And how do you do this if you’re not online with them?

We have to educate ourselves every step of the way with parenting. Right? Here are some things you’ve probably done as a parent that you can apply to parenting children who are online.

We ask our parents and friends for advice

You may not ask your parents unless they’re super tech savvy but talk to friends, specifically friends who you know have navigated parenting children who are online and done it well.

We read books and articles

There are so many great resources out there. I highly recommend KidGuard, they have recently published a how-to guide to educate parents on the importance of developing their children’s digital citizenship and safe online behavior filled with amazing tips for motoring cell phone use, GPS tracking, facts about Cyber Bullying that you may not have heard, and it’s a free resource. Check it out here: KidGuard Parents’ Survival Guide to Online Safety.

We buy products that help us parent

Whether you look into downloading software or add apps, choose tools that will give you the end result you are looking for, whether it’s security, limited screen time, privacy, or all of the above. Some are available for free, or trial periods, but I have found that the programs that are paid are often well worth the money spent. Consider it an investment into the well being of your family.
So what’s your first step? There’s no “right” way or formula for teaching your family online safety, rather the important step is to start. Pick one of the three ways above and get started, once you realize how helpful resources like KidGuard {kidguard.com} can be a whole new world will open up to you and you’ll be a step closer to parenting at your best in a tech-savvy world.

Five Whole Years and a Change for the Better

5 years ago today I wrote my first blog post on MommyBKnowsBest.com. My goals were to:

1. Review products by giving my opinions and have “cool stuff” that Miss A could play with.

2. Do a job outside of being a mom {which was awesome, don’t get me wrong}, but blogging was something that would fulfill a different part of my life.

Here was my very first blog post on this website:

MBKB First Post

Since 2009 I have worked with a ton of amazing people, had some experiences that I would have never had if it wasn’t for blogging, and felt the fulfilment that I was looking for when I first began blogging.

As each year of blogging passes I’ve tried to assess my goals and I believe the site has grown and developed in a way that was what I had imagined in my head. With your help, I’ve gained readers, and friends on this journey and I am very excited about the next part of this adventure with you.

In my 6th year of blogging change is coming.

My goals for myself as a mom and a blogger have changed. I’ve gained insight into what is fulfilling and on the other hand “empty” for me as I spend late nights working. I’ve been able to start saying no to things that are not a good fit and realizing that my time is valuable.

I love sharing my experiences with you and that part will not change, however my experiences, my life, will be shared with more intention behind them. More meaning and less “stuff”. ”

You see somewhere along the way I feel like the “stuff” has gotten in the way. My goals are to be more authentic {though I always put a part of myself in any post I’ve done}, mindful of the things I’m sharing with you, and I hope you’ll find this to be a breath of fresh air, as I know it will be for me.

I will be finishing up some projects and prior commitments throughout my relaunch,  but in the coming months will be excited to showcase my blog not only with fresh content, a new name, and a different mission, but with a great new look that DaddyB is helping me with as well.

I know not all change is welcomed, but I hope that you’ll continue to support the site in your own way, should you feel led.

Thank you, I appreciate you and love you and wouldn’t be where I am 5 years later without you.

5 Tips for Marketing your Blog with Signazon

Signazon Logo

As a blogger, I’m not only a writer and promoter {of my site and brands}, but I’m also a business owner.

If you’re a blogger or a business owner, you know there are a lot of different things you can do to enhance your business and also promote it.

Signazon has several products that I know will come in handy as I blog and grow my brand. Here are a few of their products I recommend to fellow bloggers and some I use myself as well.

step-and-repeat-splash1. Step and Repeat – Of course there’s the obvious, these are great for promoting sponsors for events, but did you know they make a great backdrop for professional vlogs and photos as well? While Signazon doesn’t have an official “green screen” you are able to customize by adding your logo, or selecting a plain backdrop. {I chose white and will superimpose logos and images depending on the subject of my vlogs.}

2. Car Magnets – If you have a local website or business, car magnets are a great way to promote your business without the expense of “wrapping” your vehicle and they’re easy to use on different vehicles as well.

3. Stationary – If you’re sending out giveaway items or, “thank you” letters to PR and Advertising companies, having your own letterhead stationary looks very professional and if you include your blog logo also helps with brand recognition.

4. Classic Banners and Stands – Whether you are attending a conference or Expo for a brand that you are representing or even attending a blogger showcase, having a banner and a stand that you can bring with you each time will attract attendees to visit your booth.

5. Cards – While I definitely recommend having business cards, those are something you probably already have for your blog {if not Signazon.com has those too and you need to get some}, but I love the idea of sending Thank You cards or even holiday cards to brands that you really enjoy working with. This gives your brand personality and can help you build or maintain those great relationships.

I loved how easy it was to order from Signazon and that my product shipped right away. Their live chat is also super handy if you have questions about products. Signazon.com offers great prices on their products and often times you can even catch a great sale on products and/or shipping.

I would highly recommend Signazon to bloggers and business owners because it’s a one stop shop and the quality of their products is superior, and I’ve seen a lot of marketing materials!!!

Check them out by heading to their website: Signazon.com and visit them on Facebook and follow them on Twitter too.

I received review product from Signazon.com in order to give an honest review. The opinions in this post are my own, honest thoughts, yours may vary.

Tips for Beginning Bloggers

In my four years of blogging I have been interviewed a few times about my job by local news, and most recently by Woman’s World Magazine. Often I receive emails asking for tips on how to get started blogging. Here are some Tips for Beginning Bloggers that will help you figure out if blogging is something you may be interested in and be a potential career for you.

While I know I could never cover everything, here are 7 tips that I feel are extremely important when it comes to the basics of blogging.

5 Ways I Unwind After the Kids are in Bed

Being a work-at-home mom is no joke, I won’t list what I do daily between work and being a momma and running the house, because I know your job(s) are probably just as packed and filled with awesomeness and craziness at the same time.

The cocktail of emails, chauffeuring, tweeting, preparing meals, and sweeping up crumbs, leaves me, most nights, drained. After the girls are in bed, and after their obligatory attempts to get food/drink/more hugs and they’re really really  asleep, I get to take a big breath in and let it out.

Being a blogger I do my writing mostly at night, but often times before I begin work for the night I give myself a little down-time. For me, it’s important to have even 30 minutes to unwind after my kids are in bed. I don’t know about you, but I usually find myself doing mindless, calming activities to release the day’s stresses.

Here are 5 Ways that I Unwind after the Kids are in Bed:

Have a “hard drink”. No, I’m not talking about liquor, or even wine, I’m actually talking about my favorite pop or if you will, soda. My soda is like my beer at the end of the night. I know it may sound weird drinking caffeine so late at night, but it also helps give me a little kick that I need to get the rest of my work done too.

Tablet Games MommyB

Become a video game junkie.  At least for 10 or so minutes. I love playing time-management games. Again, I know it probably sounds weird considering most of my day is time management, but unlike real life….I can conquer these games, and complete levels…at home, not so much completion, just repetition. Wash, dry, fold, put away, wash, dry…..

Shocker, Television.  No shocker here, I use tv shows to help me decompress. Typically these days I stick to dance or cooking competitions, or some revamping show where hosts take a business and give it a new plan. For me, they are mindless shows where I don’t have to think about the character plot, and can just sit and veg out and my brain cool off.

Surfing the Inter Webs.  While it may seem logical to not be on the computer when I’m not working, I really enjoy checking out a few websites that show off baked delights, crazy cakes, new biracial hairstyles for the girls, and new kids movie trailers. It’s nice to be online and not have a specific purpose other than laughing, or finding something really cool to show the kids the next day.

Quaker Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies MommyB

Treat Myself to a treat.  If I were a treat, I would want to be the treatiest treat in all the land, or just something that is the perfect snack. I love the fact that Quaker Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies are made with Quaker® oats AND there are four cookies in each convenient, handy pack, so I can stop at just one…I said “I can”, meaning if I wanted to.

Quaker® Chocolate Chip Cookies allow me to be indulgent while still providing the power of Quaker® oats to fuel me for whatever the rest of the day might hold.

Share how celebrate your me-time and go to Everyday Health for more fun stories.

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Quaker®. The opinions and text are all mine.

#vlogmom

#vlogmom

Hello friends!!! I’m excited to be back with another #vlogmom post. I was sad that I didn’t have time to answer last week’s question of what my ideal birthday would be like. Especially since, having a December birthday I often don’t get to celebrate as big as someone who is born in September…I have on occasion thought about doing a half birthday party instead. But I have been blessed with awesome family and friends that make my birthday special even though it shares a month with a couple other holidays and lots of vacation out of town.

This week’s question comes from Jendi of Jendi’s Journal, a vlogess herself if I do say so myself. Definitely lots of lessons to be learned from this lady when it comes to vlogging. Anyway…here’s her question…and my answer!!!

Tag, you’re it! Tell me what restaurant(s) do you love, but are out of reach. Can’t wait to hear them and while you’re here make sure you check out these fab vloggers and their answer to this week’s #vlogmom question:

#vlogmom MommyBKnowsBest on: 3 Blogging Tips

#vlogmom

#vlogmomHey everyone!!! So sorry it’s been forever since my last #vlogmom post. With the two conferences and the awesome trip to CVS/pharmacy headquarters June has been straight up INSANE for me!! But don’t get me wrong I’m enjoying all the work focused events.

Anyway I’m back into the vlogging thing this week, even though my video is a little choppy, kids in the background etc, I hope you’ll forgive me!!!

This week’s question comes from Hillary over at http://www.hacscrap.com/. Check her out and here’s the question and my answer:

So how about you? What are your blogging conference tips?

#vlogmom MommyBKnowsBest on: Flawed at Birth

#vlogmom

#vlogmomHello my lovelies!! I hope you are having a great week. This week, as usual is a little insane for me with being Miss A’s birthday week and all, but I look forward to sharing some fun crafts and ideas from her Dr. Seuss, Cat in the Hat birthday party in the coming weeks.

This week’s #vlogmom question comes from Tania at PureNaturalDiva.com. Her question is: “What is Your Biggest ‘Character Flaw’ or something you struggle with?” And here’s my answer: {ignore the messy hair, lack of makeup, I was in a rush ;)}

So, are you up for the challenge?? What’s your biggest character flaw or something you struggle with???

Mommy Bloggers Vs. High Fructose Corn Syrup

No High Fructose Corn SyrupI’m not one to press people on issues that I believe in and I don’t really consider myself as a controversial writer. And while I am opinionated, I don’t throw it down your throat. However, when something someone does is just wrong and it effects my family and friends – that’s when I feel I have to get involved.

Recently, I had a guest post on MommyBKnowsBest about the dangers of High Fructose Corn Syrup and the awful things that it can and does do to our bodies. Last month at the Type-A-Mom blogger’s conference the Corn Refiners Association launched their new name, “Corn Sugar”….. along with some blogger gifts, er bribes. Which I promptly threw out.

It’s great that the CRA (Corn Refiners Association) are giving HFCS (High Fructose Corn Syrup) another chance and changing the name so people won’t associate it with the bad rap that it’s gotten…or is it??? Read More

MommyB Knows Best Blog Redesign

MommyB

Tah-Dah!! Welcome to my “new” blog. Here it is! Make sure you check out all the pages and feel free to leave me some feedback, now that you can post to your heart’s content, and if you want send me a private message here. You can also follow me on social media! (Look for the follow buttons.)

Like I mentioned before I could not have done even a smidge of this new redesign without the help from my amazing husband! Thanks DaddyB!!

I’m proud to have my blog looking more put together since I’m a crazy organizer lady.

I’m excited to add my outlook on reviews and hopefully giveaways in the future too. I’ve noticed while reading lots of mom blogs that there aren’t many “real” reviews, you know where they say how they feel about the products rather, “just the facts ma’am.” Well this is not going to be one of those blogs, you’ll hear what I loved and hated about a product depending on the way I felt. I feel like I have a great opportunity to really test these products and services out and don’t want to do my readers a disservice by sugar coating my reviews.

I also look forward to bringing you some fun, new posts and tips and tricks that anyone can use, and hope to hear some of yours too!

Lastly, check back in the next couple of days for an amazing Celebrity, yes that’s right Celebrity, you know her from reality TV, review!

Now what are you still doing here?!? Go check out the rest of my blog, and I’d be ever so grateful if you’d spread the word.

Thanks,

MommyB
