How to Make Oral Hygiene Fun for Your Family

Have you been following my family’s LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge? Did you post a “Swish Selfie” to help the Oral Health America’s Smiles Across America program?  If not here’s my first post talking about How Your Oral Hygiene Can Help a Charity in Need.

Since we started the challenge of course we’ve been more mindful of our oral health. Though it’s not always fun to clean your teeth we found a few creative ways to get a healthier mouth for the whole family.

Oral Health Fun Must Haves:

• LISTERINE® Antiseptic

• LISTERINE® WHITENING® Original Gel Fluoride Anticavity Toothpaste

• REACH® Floss

Oral Health Fun Must Haves #listerine MommyB

Ways to make oral hygiene fun:

  • Wear a dress-up costume and brush “in character”
  • Have a mouthwash contest to see who can gargle the longest
  • Spit mouthwash out missing teeth {Miss A was really good at this}
  • Buy light up or musical toothbrushes {I know they’re more expensive, but way fun!!!}
  • Make a oral hygiene check sheet and give rewards for healthy mouths
  • Sing songs and make brushing fun. {We pretend the girls tongues are breakdancing in their mouths.}

Our mouths feel clean AND silly since we’ve completed the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge. See:

B Family Oral Fun MommyB #listerine

As a mom I noticed my girls breath smelled better, and mine did too, but I also noticed that I felt healthier. I know it sounds weird, but when my teeth are clean and healthy I notice how it effects my overall health. I love challenges that help my entire family be more healthy.

Don’t forget that YOU and YOUR FAMILY can get involved in improving your oral health and helping others by posting a “Swish Selfie” to the LISTERINE® Brand Facebook page and learn more about the challenge.

Do you have any tips for making oral hygiene fun for your family??

I received a Target gift card to purchase LISTERINE® Brand products from Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products Division of McNEIL-PPC, Inc. and The Motherhood as part of my participation in the LISTERINE® 21-Day Challenge. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.

    Hahaha -I love the idea of spitting mouthwash out of missing tooth holes. My little guy is about to lose his first (it’s hanging by a thread), so I am totally letting him do that!!

      I remember loving it when I was a kid. Why not right?!?

    I love your fun ideas!! My kids are just enjoying seeing the chunks (or lack thereof) in the sink when they spit the rinse out. These would make it even more fun for them!

    the only thing we’ve ever done is sing the ABC’s 3 times and then they’re done brushing. I need to bring up spitting out of your missing teeth though. That’s just funny!

    my older 2 have a contest of who can swish longer. my son would like to see who can spit it out from the farthest away, but I’ve put the kibosh on that idea for a while.

    This is great! It’s so hard right now to get my 2 year old into brushing. It’s a struggle! Actually, it’s a struggle to get her to do anything!

    You have a BEAUTIFUL family! I love the sillyness in the photo 🙂 We love Listerine products here. The mouthwash is the only one that I have found that actually keeps my breath fresh hours later!

    We love the light-up and signing toothbrushes! My son will hum along with his toothbrush and I buy the electronic tooth brushes for my older girls -I have always been funny about making sure we all brush our teeth, so it’s pretty routine. But having a ‘special’ toothbrush helps keep them scrubbing a bit longer! =)

    We get our large stuffed animals in on the fun – they “brush” their teeth, too!

      Good idea!!! We have tons of friends who could use clean teeth.

    Your family is so adorable.

    My boys like their musical toothbrushes. And doing “swishies,” because it’s the only time they won’t get fussed at for spitting!

    I use Listerine mouthwash myself. I’m lucky when my grandkids come over, they enjoy brushing their teeth.

    You have a great looking family. We make hygiene fun at our house by singing songs and make jokes during tooth brushing time. I’m fortunate that both of my kids enjoy brushing their teeth. You’ve got some great tips here.

    Lots of fun ideas! I love the idea too, about spitting out the rinse through the missing teeth. My son just lost another tooth, so that should be fun. I’ve been wanting to get one of those toothbrushes that plays music. When the music is done, they can stop brushing.

    My son is two and we’re trying hard to create really great oral hygiene habits with him. He has a variety of toothbrushes and we really try to make brushing our teeth a game so he won’t dread doing it every day.

      I think starting young is one of the best practical ideas for getting your kiddos on board.

    My dentist would blow a gasket if I tried to use Listerine again, haha. I have such sensitive teeth and gums, that the stuff puts me in pure agony. I’m glad it works so great for your fam though! It’s an awesome product.

    We only use listerine mouthwash. Those are some fun ideas. I don’t have any new ones for you sorry. 🙁 I’m going to have my own kids do that challenge. They so need it.

    Well every single one of you in the family picture has gorgeous white teeth. You could be a poster for Listerine. 🙂

    We’ve had Listerine in the family as long as I can remember (remember those big fat thick glass bottles with a paper label? My grandfather always had one of those).

    Great ideas! Thankfully, our three year old loves brushing his teeth. We do it first, then he brushes them himself. I think letting him help is what makes it so fun for him.

    • MommyB March 8, 2014 at 3:50 PM - Reply

      We brush our girls first too to make sure they are really clean.

    I love Listerine products! I took a 21 day challenge last year, and it really helped me to start making dental health a bigger priority. I hated flossing, but now I do it every single day. Glad that you and your family had a great experience!

    I didn’t know that Listerine made toothpaste! I only use sensitive teeth toothpaste so I always just skim the toothpaste isle. I might have to give that a try for my hubs.
