On April 10, 2010, last year, I wrote on my family website about the possibility of Nick Jr.’s Dora the Explorer all grown up. Here is a picture to the left depicting the current Dora and what they wanted her to look like after she aged. But then it was all pipe dreams.
Say, “Goodbye” to Map, Backpack, Boots the Monkey, Isa the Iguana, Benny the Bull, Tico the Squirrel, the Grumpy Old Troll, Big Red Chicken, Azul, Swiper the Fox, the Fiesta Trio, Mami, Papi, Abuela, and the rest of the old Dora “cast”.
In less than a week from today, the new “crew” is making their debut and the pipe dreams are coming to fruition with Dora’s Explorer Girls! On Sunday, August 7th at 8:00pm Nick Jr. is premiering the new episode. Where a “grown-up” version of Dora, along with her friends, Naiya, Kate, Emma, and Alana go on an adventure when they realize they’ve forgot their tickets to hit-singer, Shakira’s concert.

Dora’s Explorer Girls features Dora, {who now lives in the city} and her four friends who are trying to make the world a better place by working together. Each girl has their niche, Dora is great at reading maps and being a leader, Naiya is the expert on the universe, exploring stars and space, Kate “speaks out” encouraging people to make things better by taking action, Emma brings people together by making music with her violin {sometimes Dora joins in with her flute}, and last but not least, Alana teams up with others through playing soccer and being an organizer, rallying people to work together.
Miss A, who is now 4 years old, loved Dora the Explorer and Go, Diego, Go, but recently has left those shows behind for the likes of Olivia, The Fresh Beat Band, and even Dino Dan. I’m interested to see if this older version of Dora, and her friends will be something she likes. So far, after seeing the previews on Nick Jr. she has asked me to make sure she gets to watch it next Sunday.
For my youngest, Baby C though I’d still like to see the short, round Dora and her gang of silly friends, or maybe even Dora’s younger brother and sister as a spin-off of Dora the Explorer.
Are your children excited to see the new Dora’s Explorer Girls? How about you?

I have to admit, by youngest son loved Dora. (This was many years ago) And I didn’t even mind watching it with him.
It won’t be the same, but then again, even the Rugrats grew up.
Really? A Shakira concert? Hmmmmm.
Well, my girls love Dora, but they’re a little younger (3 & 18 months). Maybe when they’re older? But even then, unsure.
It just won’t be the same without the deep lyrics – “I’m the map I’m the map I’m the map I’m the map I’m the map.”
At least the lyrics are easy to remember.
I can’t put my finger on it, but this is totally weirding me out!
Maybe because it’s means (GASP!) that *I’m* growing older, too? Ah well. I love me some Shakira, so this might be worth it after all.
I’m happy the backpack is going away. Now if only I could get that sound bite out of my head! My daughter will be so happy to know there’s more Dora!
I’m disappointed they are going to a Shakira concert. Her “real life” concerts are hardly appropriate for young girls to watch!
I don’t think I will mind it. My daughter (3) is getting bored with Dora and this looks like it might be a nice change. I like the eclectic friends and the way they are dressed is nice. I would let my daughter copy these looks.
My daughter is 4 and has similar T V interests as your daughter, though she was never really into Dora. Her favorite was the Wonder Pets. We watched, and recorded, the older Dora episode and she loved it! I don’t approve of a lot of older TV shows for my 4 year old and I was pleasantly surprised that this show was age appropriate. As I said she loved the show and she’s watched it many times since. I wonder if they actually made this into a full time TV show. My daughter will be saddened it it’s not.
I have to admit, I was excited about this at first. After all, my four year old loves the game on the Nick Jr. Website. However, after watching the actual Movie/ T.V show, I was disappointed in the end. First off, when I was a tween, my parents wouldn’t have let me go to a concert on my own, even if it was with friends. Secondly, the girls are running all over the city, with no supervision. In a big city like that, now a days you must have supervision. I will be writing a review on this soon, as IMDB had NO information on it, so not many parents will know what is going to happen, or if it is appropriate for their kid to watch.
Yet, having a four or five year old with a talking Monkey and map is somehow more realistic? I don’t recall Dora ever being supervised when she went on her adventures so why start now?
Are they going to make this a regular series in the Fall?
We’ve watched the premier episode soooooo many times. Good thing I like the music – great harmonies.
I can’t tell you how many times we’ve watched that episode. I keep checking to see if and/or when a new one will air, no luck as of yet…
My daughter loved it!! And I accidentally deleted the premier episode from the dvr..now I cant find that episode or anything anywhere that says if and when the show will be on again! Any info for you yet?
We DVRed it too, sorry yours got deleted. I Haven’t checked On Demand yet
but you may want to look there. All I have seen is the new 3 series little Dora movie coming soon. My guess is they won’t show it until they sell lots of DVDs on it to make some extra $$$ b/c of the DVR issues.
My granddaughter loved the new DORA Explorer Girls. She is three. We have watched it repeatedly. Some how it got deleted off our dvr today. Does anyone have a copy? I’m desperate and she is going to be so upset. Thanks for any help.
My 2 year old son loves it. He already knows the songs by heart! I was pleasantly surprised when I watched the show. I like that it still is interactive, maybe not as often as before and my kids are always responding. I hope it is made into tv series.
Will the first episode be airing again, because I would love to get it on the DVR?
I don’t see anything scheduled or “on-demand”
I am following nickjr on twitter to make sure I don’t miss any announcements about new episodes. I haven’t heard any new at all either.
Great idea Karen!
Make this a show, and see the outcome. I think the whole “growing up” idea is good for kids to keep in mind. It seems as though kids are exited to become teens and tweens!
We just finished watching this. Two boys 10 and 4. 10 was watching it more in support for 4, but still admitting to liking it.
