An Introduction to Something New – Highly Sensitive Person

If you’ve never heard of Highly Sensitive Person (HSP) you may think I’m just talking about people who cry at commercials or don’t know how to take a joke, well believe it or not being a HSP isn’t about that.

According to Dr. Elaine Aron, the authority on HSP, at least 15-20% of animal species including humans are highly sensitive. In her book The Highly Sensitive Person, she takes a researched, in-depth look at highly sensitive people.

Just as no two people are alike, no two highly sensitive people are alike.

This quick test taken from The Highly Sensitive Person website:

Is this you?

Are you easily overwhelmed by such things as bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics, or sirens nearby?
Do you get rattled when you have a lot to do in a short amount of time?
Do you make a point of avoiding violent movies and TV shows?
Do you need to withdraw during busy days, into bed or a darkened room or some other place where you can have privacy and relief from the situation?
Do you make it a high priority to arrange your life to avoid upsetting or overwhelming situations?
Do you notice or enjoy delicate or fine scents, tastes, sounds, or works of art?
Do you have a rich and complex inner life?
When you were a child, did your parents or teachers see you as sensitive or shy?

**Before I continue about what my experiences have been please note I am continually learning more about HSP through Dr. Aron, online groups, and daily life. I am certainly not a medical professional or an expert on HSP.

I stumbled upon HSP while looking for some tips that would help one of our daughters with some mild anxiety, little did I know, this discovery would make the past several years so much clearer as a parent and help me understand myself as well.

On my blog and social media channels I’ll be sharing my experiences with HSP both as an individual who is highly sensitive and as a mom raising two highly sensitive children. I hope that you will join me and share your own experiences as well.

Whether it’s someone you love who is highly sensitive or you yourself are highly sensitive or even if you’re just trying to understand others in this world, I encourage you to check out the many resources available, here are a few of my favorites:

How about you? Are you familiar with HSP? Are you or someone you know an HSP???

Straight Talk on Straight Teeth

This is a sponsored post in partnership with Invisalign. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.

In my last few months of the refinement stage of my treatment with Invisalign, I have come to realize that I never noticed how much my teeth could improve. It’s really neat to be where I am today with my smile looking back on what my smile really looked like.

Invisalign Before and After Smile MommyB

I love how introspective I can now be and am sincerely impressed with how my smile has changed through each phase of treatment and even now as I finish my last few aligner trays. I love that Invisalign is an amazing alternative to braces, and while it’s awesome for adults is available to pre-teens and teens as well.

While my smile has changed immensely, looking back to before I started my journey with Invisalign treatment, I had many preconceived notions of what Invisalign would and wouldn’t be. Today Invisalign wants to set the record straight and is dispelling some of the myths or rumors about Invisalign.

Invisalign Myths/Setting It Straight

Myth: Invisalign can only treat minor or cosmetic issues.

Setting it Straight: Invisalign effectively treats a wide variety of orthodontic issues including severe bite issues. From underbite to crossbite, deepbite to overbite and overly crowded to widely spaced, advancements to Invisalign’s patented technology continues to increase the complexity of issues that can be treated.

Myth: If my child loses their aligners, it’s going to cost me an arm and a leg to replace.

Setting it Straight: We know kids lose things, even their aligners! That’s why you get up to six FREE replacement aligners with Invisalign Teen.

Myth: I don’t need to take my child to see an orthodontist until they are a teenager.

Setting it Straight: The American Association of Orthodontics recommends taking children for their first orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. The American Dental Association says this is because, “Your child’s dentist can spot problems with emerging teeth and jaw growth early on, while the primary teeth are present.”

Myth: If my child’s dentist or orthodontist recommends braces over Invisalign, I should trust their opinion.

Setting it Straight: Not all orthodontists specialize in Invisalign Teen. Visit www.invisalign.com and select “find a doctor” to locate experienced Invisalign and Invisalign Teen doctors in your area. If you are told your teen is not an Invisalign candidate, it may be worth getting a second opinion from more than one orthodontist. Doing so may help ensure that you have all the information you need to make an educated decision.

Myth: Braces work better than Invisalign.

Setting it Straight: Invisalign Teen was developed with leading orthodontists to correct the most common teeth straightening issues – from severe cases to more minor, cosmetic adjustments. Invisalign Teen’s clear aligners are removable and can straighten teeth without a mouth full of metal and all the disruption and sacrifice that comes with it. With Invisalign, teens look better and feel more confident than they ever could in traditional braces.

Hydration Station – How to Get your Kids to Drink More Water

Sippy Cup

I definitely don’t drink enough water in my day. {I’m working on it though.} But I always make sure my girls are hydrated with the right stuff, namely water.

DaddyB and I don’t allow our girls to drink carbonated drinks, however they do love their juice, and we don’t mind giving it to them occasionally, but our preferred beverage to keep them hydrated and healthy is water. There are several things we do to encourage water consumption in our home, we purchase fun sippy cups, use bendy and swirly straws, we’ve even made ice cubes with fruit in them, but one thing we’re very consistent about is making water accessible to them.

Sippy Cup Lil C and Miss A don’t get water from the fridge and aren’t tall enough to get water from the tap, so when we are at home we set up a, “hydration station” or a drink spot for them. We make them aware that this is where their water will be and every so often {usually from 30-45 minutes} we have them take at least a sip of their water, if it’s hot out or they’re more active we’ll adjust.

Miss A is now 5 and here are some things she has to say about water {this video is completely unscripted and words and thoughts from Miss A}

Apparently, water is very important!!!

Luckily, I don’t have to make my girls drink their water, they do love it, but I think I’ve also done a great job making it fun. Just like anything parenting related, if you make it fun your kids will be more willing to do good things for themselves.

Sippy Cup MommyBKnowsBest

That’s one way I’ve helped my kids discover the wonders of water. Brita’s new product, the Brita Bottle for Kids, now provides an easy and fun way to have clean, filtered H2O on the go.

Now I’m curious, how do you encourage your kids to drink more water? Reply below and one of my readers will win a $50 Visa gift card!

Sweet End of School Classmate Gift Idea {Craft}

Placemats

Miss A celebrated her last day of school yesterday. Her school put on a great Pre-K (and 3’s) performance and it was awesome. I only teared up a little. Mostly when the teachers were talking about all the amazing students.

We too were super thankful for all of Miss A’s classmates, and wanted to give them a special, “End of School” gift to let them know how much we love them. I knew I wanted something personalized so I went to our favorite kids gift site Frecklebox.com and decided on their place mats. I did a post reviewing their products a while back that you can check out here: Frecklebox Gifts. Since then we have bought several birthday gifts from them and bought some more placemats for the girls, plus they are always running discounts.

Miss A handpicked each placemat, from a number of different themes for each classmate, making the gift even more personal. A dinosaur for Kaleb, ballet theme for Natalie, and so on for each of the 7 children in her class. She was so excited to be a part of the gift selection.

Placemats

The only gift-related problem with our place mats is that I didn’t know how to wrap them or give them a label. I tried to come up with something witty that included, “I’m glad we MAT” instead of met, but scrapped that idea. Then I remembered I had lollipops left over from Miss A’s birthday party, hooray for my brain that never stops!

So on my drive home from her school, yesterday morning, {yes the morning of the last day of school} I was brainstorming wording ideas for the placemats and lollipops. I came up with some fun wording for the lollipops and added our personal information for her classmates to contact us for summer play. Here’s the image of the card I made:

End of School Classmate Gift Lollipop

I found an image of a lollipop and went to town on iPiccy, {which I highly recommend}. I made it black and white and faded the image a little so as not to overpower the words. Then I used a bright, kidcentric font to print our message.

Here are the finished products, I ended up taping the lollipops and cards on the back of the placemats, all the recipients, aka kids were super excited for their one-of-a-kind gift and pose with Miss A for one last Pre-K picture.

End of School Lollipop Gift Idea

End of School Gift Idea

This was a GREAT way to end a year of school. I hope this gives you some gift ideas for your end of the year classmate gifts.

What are your children doing for the end of the year? Do you have any unique end of the year crafts or ideas??

HCG Diet and Parenting

I’m sitting on my couch ready to go through work emails, put up posts on reviews that I’ve been working on and doing some social media. I am a person, who, like some of you, like to have background noise on while I work, and the television landed on the Dr. Oz show.

Before and After MommyB

I admittedly haven’t watched talk shows since I was pregnant with Little Miss A, in 2006, but in case you missed it today is her first day of preschool. So, as I work I hear more and more about weight loss, {which is something I’m working on right now in lieu of the weight I gained from my pregnancy with Baby C}, and my ears are turned on when I hear, “lose weight” of course.

I have about 25 pounds to get down to a healthier weight which may not seem like a whole lot to some people, but being 4′ 10″ makes every pound count.

On the show, the HCG diet was mentioned. I will point out that I am not an expert on the HCG diet, but one of my blogging friends Brittany from A Healthy Slice of Life wrote a great, informative post on HCG – The Facts.

Basically on the diet you super load on calories, {over 3,000 calories a day} the first 3 days prior to the injections. Yes that’s right you have to give yourself a daily shot of the HCG hormone. Once you start the injections you begin your food plan. The food plan with this diet is to eat 500 calories a day, high protein, low carbs, low fat and no alcohol. {Did I mention it’s 500 calories}? Now there are other crazy things associated with this diet {like many other fad diets}, like taking a break to “re-sensitize your body” and the cost. However the part that struck me most was injecting yourself with hormones and basically starving yourself {the average person should consume about three times that amount *this number varies on age, weight, height, activity level and more factors, but is a general idea}.

My problem, being a parent, is how am I to be an example to my girls when they see me doing the HCG diet, or any fad diet for that matter? Yes, I know this can apply to so many areas in life, but that’s exactly why I, personally, am trying my hardest to be an example in all realms of life, because the choices I make will impact their lives. No I am not perfect, no one is, and most of us want the best for our children. I want my children to grow up watching me exercise, be a healthy eater {which I am currently working on}, and have the occasional treat too.

Healthy Kid MommyBKnowsBest

Watching this episode on the HCG diet really made me think about the message I want to send to the girls, and perhaps you as a parent do too. Although it’s not easy for most of us to find time or energy to work out, and sometimes even hard to eat healthy being busy or on-the go; I feel that in the long run if I can impact my girls and encourage them to be healthy from the get-go that they’ll have more of a fighting chance against the genes, and diseases that run on both sides of our families that are made worse by weight gain.

Isn’t seeing mommy and daddy the most impactful way for them to learn anything?

What do you think about dieting and being a parent? Are there ways you are teaching your children to “follow your lead” or are there things that you do that you hope your children don’t inherit?

Belabumbum Lingere

Belabumbum LogoLet me introduce you to the antithesis of frumpy mommy jammies….Belabumbum Lingere & Maternity! Sometimes as moms (pregnant and after baby) we opt for clothes that are comfortable but not always stylish. Then there are “those moms” who put us to shame.

Surprisingly we can become those moms, or at least slowly evolve into a semblance of those moms, starting with Belabumbum. I’ve always heard that wearing great undergarments can make or break you, and I agree and believe that Belabumbum makes it possible for us to wear quality garments that are both stylish and comfortable.

Hallelujah!! Belabumbum has come up with a great line of beautiful pieces.  Read More
