Not So Much – Things I Don’t Like and Their Replacements

Sorry I haven’t posted in a while, I have a nagging cough and went to the doctor to find out that I had a severe ear infection and was on the verge of a double ear infection, blerg. With the help of some medicine and much needed rest I am feeling better, but that also meant less time to work.

Today I’m starting a new kind of post, a lot of people ask me why I don’t write more about things I don’t like. There are actually a lot of products, and things in general that I’m not a huge fan of, but usually I don’t take the time to write them because I enjoy writing about the things I DO like more and would rather give them the spotlight on my website. But since you asked, straight up, here are a few things that I have to say, “Not So Much” to, but also what I do like {I can’t help myself}:

Not So Much MommyB

Reverie pillow – This pillow is said to be one of the more comfortable pillows and while it’s great that it’s hypoallergenic and has some neat features, the most important feature, comfort, was lacking. Both DaddyB and I found the pillow to be much too firm for us even after weeks of use. If you like a REALLY firm pillow though this will be right up your alley. What I DO like however is sleep, luckily I’ve been able to get a little more of that than I’m used to with this cold.

Paperwork – For those of you who may not know, we are moving (staying in the greater Charlotte and surrounding area), but we are excited to look for a new house, however this means lots of paperwork for loan approval and also it’s tax season so making sure we have receipts, logging into accounts, and getting all of our ducks in a row has certainly been tedious. Lucky for me DaddyB has been in charge of the paperwork and staying up late to get things taken care of. So the great side to all this paperwork is that God has an awesome new neighborhood and home in store for us and I have much appreciation for my husband through this experience.

Discovery Place’s 101 Inventions Exhibit –  While we did have fun in the hands-on section (although I would have loved more of this) of this new exhibit at Discovery Place in Charlotte, NC, we felt that our girls (almost ages 4 and 7) were a little too young for the content (birth control, sperm) and there were parts of the exhibit that scared Lil’ C (darkness and music). DaddyB did enjoy the exhibit, but feels like he didn’t get as much info in the time we had as he wanted. I know a few people who took children and did NOT enjoy their experience, one mom even asked for her money back. Because this exhibit is not included in museum admission I would personally say skip this one. I do however like Discovery Place museums. When we left the 101 Inventions exhibit my girls had a BLAST, like usual, in the rest of the museum testing out science and math skills, playing tug-of-war with DaddyB, and I must say in defense of Discovery Place, we’ve been to a couple other exhibits in the past that we have loved.

Discovery Place 101 Inventions Review MommyB

Toxic things – For this I’m lumping in things and people. I’m super guilty of putting things in my body that aren’t healthy {maybe you can relate}, and lately have been studying more homeopathic styles of living and also Ph Balance with the help of some friends. Often times I know and can feel the acidity or “hot” nature of my body after I ingest something and can see that there are easy fixes, I’m excited to post some things here that may help you out too. As for toxic people, a while ago I mentioned this being my year of intentional living and making changes for the better, I can say that I’ve been more mindful in my relationships and growing the ones I see that are healthy, supportive, and uplifting for me and leaving behind some that were toxic and still present themselves to be toxic. Choosing what’s best for myself and my family to grow closer to God and become more like Christ means leaving things that can’t be changed behind.

Cancer – Unfortunately it feels like this season of life that I’m going through right now is riddled with illness. Recently, Heaven gained an angel in Super Carter, whose family is amazing and was very close in age to Lil’ C. And since I’ve learned of friends that I went to school, both high school and college with that have family members who, too, are dealing with cancer. While I know it’s not always an immediate comfort, my family and these families have chosen to turn to God to give them strength to get through each day. I am constantly encouraged by attitude and faith that these people have.

While I know this was a VERY interesting mix of things I am not loving right now it’s all from my heart, the good and bad.

What are some things that you’re not a fan of right now? What are you replacing that bad thing with or what good can come out of it?

I received a samples and admission to some of the above mentioned products and events. This in no way affects the opinions expressed in this post. All thoughts expressed are my own, yours may vary.

How to Show Your #disneyside Princess Style

It’s no secret that we love to have parties and playdates, but having two girls a princess party is a must! We’ve thrown a Sofia the First Princess party, and a Princess Birthday party for Lil’ C and of course many princess dress-up parties in our time.

Realizing that all of our #disneyside attendees were going to be girls, {we wish we could have invited millions of friends but with the party limits and space inside our house, only Disneyland could have held us all}, our obvious choice for party theme was a princess party. Don’t worry though, we had plenty of Mickey, Minnie, and the gang too.

How to Show your #disneyside Princess Style MommyB

Here’s our recipe for a great #disneyside party:

A Spoonful of Beautiful Princesses:

Our snacks included:

  • Disney Princess Fruit Snacks and “Snow White” bunny gummies

  • Pink Princess Punch {aka strawberry lemonade} in our Mickey-fied Aladdin mason jar.
  • Mickey themed cupcake liners filled with Craisins
  • Hidden Mickey kid-friendly snacks and veggies in black round bowls
  • Hidden Mickey cupcakes*
  • Mini Mickey cupcakes*
  • #Disneyside Mickey cookies*
  • Mickey chocolate cake pops *

* Thanks to Cupcrazed Cakery for providing the delicious baked goods, the moms and princesses loved them and even got to take their cake pops home, some of them shared with siblings too! These treats were amazing!

A dash of decorations, crafts, games, and goodie bags:

#disneyside princess party mommyB

Our guests got their photos taken in front of the Mickey and Gang Step and Repeat, chose their favorite Disney Princess tattoo, made Disney inspired t-shirts from Hanes brand, {of course most of the shirts featured Mickey and favorite princesses}, listened to the Disney Frozen soundtrack, played Disney trivia and Disney Bingo, and of course left the party with some pretty cute purple and pink princess swag including headband crowns, star wand lollipops, and a variety of Disney goodies.

We had so much fun with our friends and had a blast showing our princess #disneyside. I can’t wait to take the girls to Disneyland as a part of the Disney Social Media Moms Conference in April. They will be beyond excited to visit and DaddyB and I can’t wait either.

We want to know, how do you show your #disneyside???

As promised, here’s your chance to show your #disneyside with Build-a-Bear Workshop, enter to win a $25 gift card and be sure to check out their new Disney Princess Palace Pets friends.

North America’s Leading Children and Maternity Consignment Event – Just Between Friends Franchise

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Just Between Friends.

Have you ever thought about running a business of your very own? Being able to set your own hours? Helping your neighborhood and community? Making some extra cash for your family?

As moms, often times we want something in addition to being a mom and turn to jobs outside the home. As a blogger, most of the time I work from home, but there are opportunities for me to attend media events and work with the community, much like owning your own franchise with Just Between Friends Franchise {JBF}, North America’s leading children’s and maternity consignment event. I get to be mommy first and work at my own pace and as much or little as I want, and I really enjoy what each job, {different in it’s own rite}, brings me.

Shopper 25

With the opportunity to turn your passion for helping other families save money, and wanting to step into a role of business owner for whatever reason it may be, Just Between Friends may be the perfect fit for you to become a business owner.

Some benefits to running your own business:

  • Make your own hours – if your children have sports or extracurricular activities that you can’t miss you can plan your working hours and event hours around your family’s needs.
  • Know your customer base – living in the area that you are hosting your consignment events gives you a great advantage of knowing what the best dates for sales will be and how to promote your sales.
  • Help families save money – JBF helps more than half a million families save and earn money every single year and you will be a big part of that!
  • Make extra income for your family – supplement income, save up for vacations that you might not have been able to go on before, or start or build on your family savings.
  • Work with others – Should you decide to run a business with friends, you’ll be working together to help create a successful business and enjoying that relationship that may be stronger

The Today Show calls it “the hottest ticket in town” and you could be the person or people who bring this to your area. Check out this video to hear more about the Just Between Friends consignment franchise.

Just Between Friends currently has 138 franchises in 28 states and Canada and expanding. That’s where you come in. JBF is looking a mom, or several moms to be the first to bring this super-successful event to area where there aren’t any.

At this point you may be wondering how it all works:

• Local moms/families/friends run the consignment event twice a year – spring and fall (a few ambitious owners may add in a holiday sale or summer event if they decide to)

• Families in your community sign up as consignors and sell the new and gently-used items their children have outgrown (or never used)

• Consignors earn 60 to 70 percent of the price of their sold items

• Other families shop the sales event and generally save more than 50 to 90% off of retail prices

Because JBF is part of a franchise, you have all the tools you’ll need to help you succeed at your fingertips and a great support system to help you build this business. That means you still have the flexibility to put your family first AND enjoy your passion AND help others. JBF is great for any “mompreneur” who is interested in owning a business that will help earn extra money without taking long hours from your family every week.

Breaking News – CVS/pharmacy Goes Tobacco-Free and Stops Selling Tobacco Products

I can’t say I’m not elated about the HUGE stance CVS/pharmacy is taking by not selling tobacco products starting this Fall. As the daughter of smoking parents, they know how I feel, and while I know it’s a hard habit to break, I love the reasons behind CVS/pharmacy’s big tobacco free decision and look forward to a healthier America and am so glad a great brand is taking a HUGE step in the right direction.

CVS Tobacco Free MommyB

CVS Caremark’s corporate mission is focused on helping put people on a path to better health. This morning, CVS Caremark announced that they will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at their more than 7,600 CVS/pharmacy stores by October 1, 2014.

“Now more than ever, pharmacies are on the front lines of health care, becoming more involved in chronic disease management to help patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. All of these conditions are made worse by smoking, which is the leading cause of premature disease and death in the U.S., with more than 480,000 deaths annually. Because of this, this is the right thing for us to do and something we need to do for our customers.

Our decision to stop selling tobacco products is consistent with the positions taken by the American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association and American Pharmacists Association that have all publicly opposed tobacco sales in retail outlets with pharmacies.”

In addition to removing tobacco products and cigarettes for sale in their stores, this Spring CVS Caremark will be launching a national smoking cessation program with the goal of helping millions of Americans quit smoking.

Big thumbs up for this initiative and who knows maybe other drugstores will follow suit and help the 7 out of 10 smokers that want to stop smoking.

Here’s to a healthier America. Mom & Dad if you’re reading this you know what I’m thinking…….

The opinions and thoughts expressed in this post are my own. I was not compensated in any way by CVS/pharmacy to write about this. Because it is a topic that is personal and lays heavy on my heart I chose to bring this message to you. I work with CVS/pharmacy and believe they are a great brand and have been a customer for years and will continue to be especially if their direction continues to help others get healthy and stay healthy.

How to Teach Children about Global Ministry and Goodwill

Often times I hear the argument from people as to why we should bother helping people in our own countries when there are so many people struggling with poverty, healthcare, and other issues in our own nation.

Last I checked, no where in the Bible does it say that we are to only help those who are our neighbors. If we want to single out only those that are in other countries, what’s to say that we shouldn’t start segregating by gender, ethnicity, religion, age, and so on?

I enjoy helping people whether they live under my roof, are in my community, live in my state, have a home in America, or live on the same planet. For me the word “neighbor” isn’t specific to the zip code I live in.

One of the reasons I’m so passionate is because I love helping others. I hope that is evident by posts on volunteer projects with my family, working with a local domestic violence non-profit, and other events/things I don’t need to list out. I don’t help others only because I truly have a heart for others but because God commands us to help one another.

James 2: 14-17 says, “What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, and one of you says to them, “Go in peace, be warmed and filled,” without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.”

Sure, we can memorize all the Bible verses in the world, and talk to others about our faith, but if we’re not putting God’s love and grace into action how are we truly reaching others?

How are we teaching our children about global ministry and goodwill??

Teaching our children about other countries and their needs whether they are preschool age or in college, we can all learn new things about what life is like around the world. In the Five-Day Experience your family can enjoy learning about Kenya. By taking 15 minutes a day, sitting down as a family, and participating in this devotional you’re offering your family chances to openly discuss, pray about, and grow a heart for neighbors in other countries.

I love this experience because it gives families personal stories of real people living in Kenya, fun facts about the country and then ties it in with a compelling bible verse. There’s also a student version available for bible studies and student groups.

How can we apply what we are learning?

One organization, Awana Clubs International, encourages families {and non-families alike} to help their neighbors by putting their faith into action. Right now in Kenya, Awana is reaching 122,000 kids, creating life-long disciples that will help transform their slums, neighborhoods, villages and cities. As you’ve seen in the news, Kenya is a place that needs hope, the hope of the Gospel, and that’s where you come in.

Through their current project, Not the End, you can purchase limited edition t-shirts for $15, where more than 40% of each purchase goes to helping fund training and further the reach of ministry in Kenya. To “sweeten the deal”, Crossway publishing company is donating a Bible for each shirt sold.

Not the End Awana Social Media Graphic

For many of these children, this Bible will be first one they may have owned. What’s even more incredible, if a person, family or organization sells or buys 30 shirts, their name will be entered into a drawing from which five people and a guest each will be selected to travel with Awana to Kenya in 2014 to minister in the slums of Kibera, do service work in an orphanage and distribute Bibles.

Buy your Not the End shirt HERE and change the world. Also make sure you follow We are Not the End on Facebook, Twitter and when you buy your shirt make sure to hashtag #wearenottheend

Not The End MommyB

I received a Not the End T-shirt and marketing materials and was asked to write about this project. I gladly agreed. My family and I love supporting great causes and if you see it posted on my blog it’s something that I stand behind or think you should know about. Thank you for reading and sharing!

Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes & More Charlotte

Living in Charlotte, I have many opportunities to work with amazing people. I fully enjoy working with those who use their talents and businesses for good and Ines Aranguren at Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes & More is one of those amazing people.

Ines is a very talented baker and artist. Usually you find a cake that will taste great, but look okay or taske okay and look great. This is not the case with Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More. I have had the pleasure of working with Ines on a local event, tasted her delicious treats at birthday parties, and most recently was able to share one of her fun creations with my daughter’s class.

This beautiful Christmas/Happy Birthday Jesus cake, complete with fluffy snow frosting, colorful Christmas trees and of course by request, baby Jesus in a manger was made specifically for Miss A’s class party by Ines from Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More.

 SkystheLimitChristmasCakeCollageMommyB

Not only was everyone impressed with how amazing this cake looked but parents and students alike were digging in for a piece {or two!} and everyone wanted Sky’s the Limits’ information. I of course was happy to recommend because I believe in great businesses, doing good things for others, and that are more than professional in their field of work and Ines and her husband are just that.

Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More is known for their gorgeously decorated wedding cakes, and have been nominated for several awards including the Wedding Wire Couple’s Choice Awards for 2014, and theknot.com’s 2013 Best of Weddings. While she rocks at wedding cakes, Ines excels at anything she does and does not limit her skills to any one dessert type. If you check out her Facebook page you can see beautiful fruit tarts, delectable pies, and scrumptious cookies.

The creations that Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes & More design are above and beyond what you could imagine. I’m not exaggerating when I say that Ines’ realistic looking flowers and intricate designs will blow you away.

Be sure to head to her website for more examples of her work, cake and frosting flavors and prepare to be amazed! skysthelimitcake.com

Miss A’s class received this cool cake from Sky’s the Limit! Custom Cakes and More and while I am not obligated to write a blog post for them {at their request}, I can’t help but share with you about brands and businesses my family {and many others} truly enjoy.

Keep it Clean in 2014 with Mr. Clean

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Mr. Clean

Think keeping your house clean in 2013 was a chore?? How about cleaning up Times Square in New York City after the world’s biggest New Year’s Eve celebration??

For the first time ever, Mr. Clean stepped up to help in the massive New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) and Times Square Alliance cleanup of Times Square following this year’s New Year’s Eve celebration. Each year, the DSNY completes the heavy clean-up of Times Square in record time. This year, Mr. Clean provided the finishing sparkle to Duffy Square’s famous Red Steps with a NEW product, Mr. Clean® Liquid Muscle™.

A 25-person “Mr. Clean Team” led by “The Accidental Housewife” Julie Edelman ushered in a clean 2014.

#newyearsclean

Cleaning with Liquid Mr. Clean

The new Mr. Clean® Liquid Muscle™ has 2.5 times more power in every drop vs. Mr. Clean 40oz. With its new auto-stop cap feature, Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle delivers the right amount of cleaning gel with one squeeze – free of mess. It penetrates dirt, fights grease and lifts stains with less going to waste. Liquid Muscle can be used on a variety of surfaces, including sealed floors, tables, countertops, sinks, stovetops and more.

Julie Edelman aka The Accidental Housewife gives us some tips to save time, money and your sanity in 2014:

1. TACKLE HIGH TRAFFIC ZONES FIRST: Divide your home into MUST DO and CAN DO LATER zones. The must do’s are bathrooms, kitchen and bedrooms which are bacteria, allergy (dust mites) and germ magnets AND should be cleaned regularly. Can do later zones are areas such as family rooms, guest bedrooms, and hallways.

2. BLEND CHORES THAT BORE INTO EVERYDAY ACIVITIES: Housework can be boring, so staying focused while doing it can be a chore. ‘Blend’ i.e. ‘work’ tasks into everyday activities and routines. Next time you’re chatting on the phone with your BF or mom, chat while cleaning countertops, door handles and sinks.

3. SAVE YOUR NRG: Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle can handle anything, especially if it can clean up Times Square after New Year’s Eve! Save your elbow grease and simply squirt a drop of the powerful new formula onto countertops, appliances and more.

4. TAKE THE GUESS WORK OUT OF ‘HOW MUCH’: Thanks to its innovative one-dose cap, Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle delivers the perfect amount of cleaning gel with every squeeze – that can be applied directly to surfaces or diluted in water as a cleaning solution. Similar to tasks like dishwashing and laundry, buy single, pre-measured packets. This will certainly help you prevent wasting product and in the end, also save you money!

5. ENLIST PINT-SIZED HELPERS: If you have young kids, they are perfect for helping with kid-friendly home-keeping chores like vacuuming and laundry. If you don’t have any children, I’m sure friends and family who do will be happy to lend out theirs so they can enjoy an hour or two of free time!

Mr. Clean Liquid Muscle is available at grocery retail, home improvement, and mass merchandise stores nationwide starting January 2014. More information on the entire Mr. Clean product line can be found at www.mrclean.com or www.facebook.com/mrclean.

Beautiful Hair in 2014 with Blo Charlotte

With 2014 upon us have you thought about things you’d like to change or transformations you’d like to make in the New Year? If saving money, feeling great, and looking your best are on your list I have just the place for you to accomplish all of those. Blo Charlotte is the newest, pinkest, blow dry bar in the Charlotte area and is ready to give you the hair you’ve been waiting for.

I was excited to receive a complimentary service from Blo and am excited to share my experience with you.

Before my appointment, I looked through the variety of styles that Blo offers trying to choose my favorite. Blo offers several styles for any occasion and have additional services including, Blo On the Go, {where they bring their services to you}, deep conditioning treatments, a la carte updos and more!!

The main styles to choose from include: Go Fish {a fishtail braid}, Hunt Club {a perfectly styled ponytail}, High Society {a beautiful high bun}, Pillow Talk {soft beach waves}, Holly Would {lots of bouncy curls}, Executive Sweet {straight and sleek}, and Red Carpet {smooth look with lots of body}. Since I was having a casual day I went with the Pillow Talk style for some soft curls. Here’s how my hair turned out.

Blo Charlotte MommyB

If you’ve never been to a blow dry bar, specifically Blo Charlotte, and you enjoy pampering, this is an experience you won’t want to miss.

Here are a few blow dry bar first timer tips:

1. Shower but don’t wash your hair. Blo Charlotte includes a wash with their service and if you shower before your style you’ll be fresh and clean for whatever the day may bring without adding steam or ruining your new hair-do.

2. When it comes to curls more is more. While Blo’s hair styles definitely stand the test of time, in many cases throughout the day the curls will tend to lose their bounce, so if you want to ensure lots of bounce and curls to last day and night you may want to opt for more curls.

3. Speak your peace. Blo stylists are highly qualified {I loved Stephanie}, and want you to leave with what you feel is the best looking hair. If you want to add a little curl or need some extra volume, just ask. From what I experienced each stylist takes pride in knowing they not only did their best work, but also that their clients leave happy.

4. Take a photo. Whether you are getting an a la carte updo, or one of several hairstyles the Blo menu offers if you’re looking for something specific be sure to take a picture with you. Remember though often times celebrities and model hair may be different than your own, but in communicating and working with your stylist you can achieve a style you’ll be happy with.

Overall, my experience at Blo Charlotte was pleasant, from the staff and stylists who lent their services, to the professionalism of the work and the space, and the fun I had getting pampered and waiting to see my finished look. At $35 for a wash, blow, and go, service I would highly recommend this for a special occasion, some regular pampering, or a fun treat for yourself or a girlfriend {or a bunch of girlfriends, ahem, feel free to include me}.

I also inquired about styling for Miss A’s hair {now that she’s 6 she enjoys getting her hair temporarily straightened once and a while}, and I was delighted to find out that Blo does offer services for curly hair including biracial and African American hair among other hair types. I can’t wait to take Miss A and treat her to a service and share that with you all in the future as well!!

If you went to Blo Charlotte, which style would you choose???

Be sure to stop by their website, and like their Facebook and Twitter pages too for discounts, updates, and to schedule your appointment.

I received complimentary services for this review. The opinions expressed in the above post are my own, honest thoughts about the services I received. Your opinion may vary.
