Make Dinner Easy for You, Yummy for Them, and Healthy for Your Family

This is a sponsored post, all opinions are my own.

Now that school and extracurricular activities have begun, I often find myself at a loss for dinners. I either forget to put ingredients into my slow cooker, don’t have the right ingredients for my dishes, or end up only having a few minutes to fix something quick.

While my girls are pretty good about being thankful for the food they have they’re still kids, there are times when they don’t love what I’ve put on their plate.

I don’t know about you but some nights I really wish I had it together, so I’m always on the lookout for tips and recipes to make my weeknight dinners easy for me, tasty for them, and healthy for our family.

Tips to get your kids to LOVE Dinner MommyB

Green Giant Frozen Steamers to the rescue! Green Giant is kicking off the, “Fresh Take on What to Make” campaign in partnership with celebrity chef and TV host Gina Neely, Celebrity Chef and TV Host from “Down Home with the Neelys”.

This program offers expert tips and recipes to make back-to-school, weeknight dinners easier on parents. Gina developed 5 tips for conquering hectic weeknight dinners while making meals that are nutritious and delicious, including “one-pot wonders,” grocery list must-haves and her favorite ways to get kids involved in the kitchen.

In a Green Giant Frozen Survey, they found that more than a third of parents surveyed admitted to forgetting about, or even purposely cutting out, vegetables when crunched for time at the end of the day, leaving them out of meals an average of twice a week. This is despite four-out-of-five (83%) parents agreeing no dinner is complete without a vegetable.

Whether you’re like us and usually get a few veggies in but could always use more or end up missing out on the veggies, you won’t want to miss Gina’s ideas like Quick ‘n Easy Chicken Pot Pies and more. You can get more recipes and chat live with Gina and other parents just like us by joining tomorrow’s Google Hangout.

If you can use some ideas and inspiration come join me – Green Giant and Gina Neely are hosting a Google+ hangout tomorrow, Tuesday, September 23 at 8pm ET. Head here: http://bit.ly/1pkEbnY to RSVP and join me, can’t wait to hear your questions, and suggestions.

Saving Time and Money with Shelf Scouter – Digital Pantry Review

This is a compensated post in partnership with Shelf Scouter.

I’m a list maker. Are you a list maker? I make lists for all sorts of things, to-do for work, projects I’m working on at home, groceries, and the lists go on… and if I forget my list… back in the BC era {Before Children}, I used to be able to memorize everything on my lists at any given time, these days I’m lucky to remember one thing on my grocery list.

To Do List

My shopping trips turn into a game that looks something like me going down every.single.aisle in the store looking at all the products trying to remember if we have them in our pantry or not, only to get home, unload, and find that I have “multiples” of what I already had at home and missed out on the staples I really needed. Not to mention it’s a chore to grocery shop in the first place. Unfortunately we’re not as close to the grocery as we used to be in our old house, but there are ways to save some stress when I “miss my list”. Engineer turned mom-trepreneur, Lindsay Fairman and her team of women recently launched Shelf Scouter, a free website/app to assist busy families in shopping for everything – a digital pantry of sorts. I love checking out sites like Shelf Scouter, anything that can save me time and brainpower – count me in!

Shoes that Fit – Giving Back Locally

This is a sponsored post in partnership with Rack Room Shoes, all opinions are my own.

While our kiddos may be worried about buying the trendiest backpacks and having the coolest new outfits for school, there are many children who are headed back to school with shoes that are old and worn or that just don’t fit well, or even worse they have no shoes at all.

This Back to School season, Rack Room Shoes is proud to partner with Shoes That Fit, a national non-profit organization that provides shoes to disadvantaged children. This program helps children in your community start the school year off on the right foot.

The more money that is raised, the more resources available to purchase shoes for needy students in your area.

ShoesThatFit_logo

How you can participate:

  • Shop at your local Rack Room Shoes store for your family’s Back to School shoe needs.
  • Donate $5 or more in-store to the Shoes That Fit campaign to benefit disadvantaged children in your local community, or donate online.
  • If there’s not a Rack Room Shoes store near you and you would like to help another community click the link above to donate online as well.

In exchange for your donation, you will receive a special colorable Shoes That Fit tote bag. Color your tote bag with your children for a fun family activity and support your local community at the same time. This also provides your family with a great opportunity to talk about serving the community and helping others.

Miss A, Lil’ C, and I worked on their bags, had a chance to talk about children who are in need of good shoes for the school year. The girls decided to donate some of their own money to the Shoes That Fit Campaign to help other kids.

Here are their creations:

Why Your Family Should Care Whether Brands offer Guarantees

As an ambassador for Rayovac I have been compensated for this blog post. All thoughts and opinions on the products are my own.

Has anyone ever made a promise to you and not kept it with the end result letting you down? Of course they have, we’re all human and it happens every day. I’ve let people down and been let down and know just how unpleasant it is. No one wants to be left with that yucky feeling.

Whether it’s a friend saying they’ll meet up and changing plans last minute, an experience you sign up for that doesn’t live up to what you thought it would be, or a purchase you make that ends up as money “flushed down the drain”. Even this month, I’ve been there. How about you?

Though this happens in life we want our family to believe in promises and keeping them and we want to put time and money into those we feel have the same characteristics. That’s why we rely on Rayovac’s quality products. Our girls learn that there are brands that they can depend on and affordable prices, and companies that will back their products up.

Why Your Family Should Care whether Brands Offer Guarantees MommyB

As a brand, Rayovac doesn’t want to be the brand that lets their customers down, they aim to be trustworthy. They keep you in mind when they create their products. They don’t want to break their promise of quality products, they want to value your time and money. Because Rayovac stands behind their products, they are able to offer their Rayovac Guarantee, a guarantee like no other in the battery industry.

Not only is this the best practice {in my opinion}, but it’s also the best protection for your most important tech devices. Check out the True Meaning of the Word Guarantee when it comes to Rayovac’s product promise.

You and your family will benefit from a brand’s quality guarantee and you won’t feel like you’re wasting money or time, because both of those things are important to busy families.

I personally love that Rayovac offers warranties on their products as fewer and fewer brands are these days. For more information on this guarantee and what is covered, visit Rayovac’s website: rayovac.com

How do you teach your family to be trustworthy and promise keepers?

What do you think of brand warranties?

What is a University Model® School?

Disclaimer – I do not work for Naums nor have we started schooling at Naums, all information is from the Naums website or information shared from people who have been schooling and my general but limited knowledge of the University Model® school setting.

Lately I’ve had quite a few people ask me what school Miss A will be attending in the Fall and to explain more about how her school works.

Let’s rewind to school last year when Miss A was attending 5-day, traditional private school. DaddyB and I felt that, for a lot of reasons, the school Miss A was attending and a traditional 5-day school weren’t a great fit for Miss A so with the fact that we were open to moving (since we sold our home and re-rented it back ((a story for another day)), that we could really explore all schooling options.

The public school for our neighborhood at that time was not an option for several undesirable reasons, but we looked into other private schools in different areas and counties, did our research on charters and after reviewing all of our options we decided, through much prayer and thought, that the University Model® school seemed to be the best fit for Miss A and our family.

What is a University Model® School Answers and information on MommyBKnowsBest

What is a University-Model® school?

The University-Model® school (UMS) model is an option for education that is not the traditional 5-day setting. According to NAUMS (National Association of University Model Schools) “the UMS model of education takes the best attributes of home schooling and combines them with the best attributes of traditional, Christian education.” For our family we felt like it would be the best of both worlds, we would have more time to spend with Miss A (and Lil C once she starts Kindergarten), and give more hands-on learning, while focusing on a university style program.

The program at the school we chose (which keep in mind each University-Model® school has the same foundational roots, but can be very different), is strongly grounded in faith and both character and academically driven.

Our school is a private school, not a co-op for homeschoolers or a public/charter school. I believe this is similar to most University-Model® schools, but am not 100% sure if this includes all of the schools.

“The ultimate goal is that of producing wholesome, competent men and women of character who make a positive difference for Christ in the next generation.” Naums.net

How is University-Model® school different from traditional public, charter, magnet, or private schooling?

This school system is unique in that it is not a 5-day program. This model gives students a portion of professional full day classroom instruction and a portion of home study days with curriculum provided by the classroom teacher.

For our specific school Miss A will have 3 classroom instruction days and 2 days of home study. For our family it was amazing to think that we will have more days with Miss A than she will be in school (counting weekends Miss A will have 4 days at home and 3 days in school). Curriculum is based on several factors and highly supported with communication between teacher and parent.

Some things we loved specifically about this school and the University Model® are that they are founded on faith, character and academically driven, in our program subjects can be integrated, the school Miss A will be attending has an amazing support system for both mother and father.

Here are a few quotes from parents who have been using the University Model® with their children about what UMS is:

My short short explanation that usually is followed by a conversation is “picture university/college. You don’t go into class every day, but you have work to do every day. My kids go into class three days a week with their professional teacher and then we do work assigned by that teacher at home two days a week: projects, reports, review work, etc…” A Mom Who Tried Homeschooling for a Year and Realized it Wasn’t a Good Fit for Her Family

A combination of professional classroom time with two – 3 days at home using school developed lesson plans. Family and Christianity are also a common tie for all UMS’s.” Susan S.

What is a University Model® School Answer on MommyBKnowsBest

The biggest reason we chose a University-Model® school

While academics are important to our family we felt that we could have more time with our children and play an even larger role, while cultivating their relationship with God and enriching their character. To us, having healthy and happy children who have the tools to happy and healthy adulthood, were invaluable.

If you are interested in learning more about NAUMS and University-Model® schools please feel free to reach out to me via my contact form or head to NAUMS website Naums.net for more information.

Please keep in mind we have not started University-Model® school as of this post publish date and that each school within the model are very different and others may have different opinions or experiences. The above message is to both educate on the University-Model® school and give you one mom’s opinion.  I will update any information in this post as it comes available to me.

Steps to Help Feed Hungry Kids this Summer

I worked with The Motherhood on this post, sponsored by ConAgra Foods. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Kids Summer Fun MommyB

As parents, we often focus on the goal of Summer as time for our kids to have fun and relax before school starts up again. We try to make sure they’re not eating too much junk food and sweets with all the celebrations and parties, but there are parents who don’t have those options, their children are not having a fun summer, relaxing and eating sweets, their family is worrying about their next meal will come from because they’re not offered the reduced and free meals that schools offer. That breaks my heart and hopefully yours too.

I’ve joined forces with The Motherhood to help promote the Hunger-Free Summer campaign, and bring awareness to child hunger.

The ConAgra Foods Foundation has continued to raise awareness and invest in solutions for child hunger in the summertime, but we need your help!

This summer, 26 food banks in 18 states will use Hunger-Free Summer grants, funded by the ConAgra Foods Foundation – ranging from $20,000 to $50,000 – to expand their summer feeding program, bringing more healthy meals to more children during the summer.

Please watch this video – for every view, like or share of this Kid President video NOW through July 31, the ConAgra Foods Foundation will donate the monetary equivalent of one meal to Feeding America (up to 2 million meals):

ConAgra Foods Foundation is a leader in the child hunger space partnering with some of the largest nonprofit organizations dedicated to child hunger.

ConAgra Foods’ Hunger-Free Summer initiative with Feeding America has a goal of reaching at least 25 percent more children in need during the summer than before, over the course of five years. There are ways that our families can help too.

Ways you Can Help Give Children a Hunger Free Summer

Aside from donating by liking, sharing, viewing the above video, here are some additional Steps to Help Feed Hungry Kids this Summer:

  • Volunteer: While providing meals is a top priority, fun activities are also important in attracting children to feeding sites. During the summer, volunteers can help transport food, help an existing feeding site with lunch preparation and clean-up, or do activities with the children. Visit www.feedingamerica.org to find a nearby food bank in need of volunteers.
  • Host a Food Drive: Find out the items needed at the feeding site and collect food through your church, organizations, and even play groups. Every item helps.
  • Advocate: To find meal sites in your area, call the National Hunger Hotline at 1-866-3-HUNGRY (1-866-348-6479).
  • Learn: To learn more about the issue of child hunger, visit www.childhungerendshere.com and click on the “tacking action” tab.

It’s awesome when big businesses do their part and equally awesome when we do ours. What will you do to help fill an empty stomach this summer?

This message is important to me personally and I am honored to be able to pass on this information and truly encourage you to thoughtfully consider helping Feeding America and ConAgra Foods give kids a hunger-free summer. Thank you for your readership!

Celebrating Father’s Day and the #worldstoughestjob with Cardstore

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Cardstore, all opinions and stories are my own.

I have to admit my husband is an amazing Dad. I’m constantly amazed at the “Daddy-Daughter Adventures” he comes up with when I have to be away from him and the girls for work or events. The girls are always filled with excitement as DaddyB grabs his white board and they start making their plans. Whether it’s finding a fun way to run errands or fulfilling a request to head to their favorite play place DaddyB always takes on the challenge and goes above and beyond enjoying his time with our children.

Being adventure daddy is only one of his many jobs. His jobs also include being strong daddy, chef daddy, and birthday party entertainer daddy to name a few:

Worlds Toughest Job Father's Day MommyB

I am so blessed that my girls are growing and interested in celebrating their daddy too. This Father’s Day we used Cardstore to craft a personal {and GREAT priced} card for DaddyB and they helped!! They loved choosing which pictures should go on the front and saying all the things that they loved about their dad to add to the card.

It was super easy to make the card, Cardstore gave us step-by-step instructions plus I LOVED that I could use photos from practically anywhere, my computer, Facebook, Instagram!! Very cool.

Here’s the front of the card we chose after we personalized it:

Celebrating Father's Day #worldstoughestjob MommyB

and the inside mentioned all the reasons why he is great, one being that he shaves his prickly beard. I bet your kiddos have some fun comments about their dad too.

Teaching Kids to Cartwheel, Handspring, and More at Little Gym Summer Camps

Little Gym of Huntersville & Lake Norman
This post is in partnership with The Little Gym of Huntersville/LKN.

Do you or your kiddo ever wish they could learn one skill like cartwheeling? I’ve mentioned before I’m the Mombassador for The Little Gym Huntersville – Lake Norman and Miss A and Lil C have enjoyed each of their classes and have been in classes for several years. I love that the classes give my girls well-rounded skills in all areas of gymnastics from balance to teamwork, and am excited that this year Little Gym is focusing on specific skills.

This summer, Little Gym of Huntersville – Lake Norman is offering several summer sessions for your children {ages 6-12 years old} to grow in different areas of their gymnastics.

Little Gym Skill Thrill and Super Kids Small

Here they are:

Caribbean Cartwheels & Hawaiian Handstands June 24th & June 26th

Cartwheels and Handstands are the “gateway skills” that will lead the beginning/intermediate level gymnast toward learning Round-Offs, Back Handsprings, Front Handsprings , and more!  Because Cartwheels and Handstands are both “upside down” skills, they do wonders for building your child’s upper body and core strength, too!  Learning and perfecting Cartwheels and Handstands are a “must” for young gymnasts!  A “Caribbean/Hawaiian” side theme will add a fun tropical twist to the week!

Back Handspring Bonanza July 15th & July 17th

This Skill Thrill Camp is perfect for those kids who are ready to learn the Back Handspring!  It’s also great for those kids who have learned a Back Handspring – but are ready for more advanced Back Handspring variations, i.e. Round-Off, Back Handsprings; Round-Off Back Handspring-Back Handspring; and more!  A three hour “Back Handspring Bonanza”!  What could be more fun?

Front Handspring Festival July 29th & July 31st

This Skill Thrill Camp is perfect for those kids who have learned their handstand – and are ready to move to the next step – a “Front Handspring”!  This camp is also great for kids who can do this skill by themselves – but just need some repetition and practice to solidify their technique and confidence.  This Front Handspring Festival will also be an “Upper Body Fitness Festival” of sorts – as handstands and front handsprings are a great way to exercise the muscles of the arms, shoulders, chest and back!

Amazing Aerials August 12th & August 14th

Is it possible to do a “no-handed cartwheel”?  YES – this skill is called an “Aerial”!  While advanced-level gymnasts may be perfecting their aerial or learning to link their aerial to other skills, beginning and intermediate gymnasts will have the opportunity to grow their cartwheels as they journey through the many skill progressions to learn the intricacies of this exciting skill.  This Skill Thrill Camp may be just the thing for those kids who are “THAT CLOSE” to doing their aerial by themselves!  This week may just do the trick!

Interested in finding out more information? Check out the schedule on TLG’s website: thelittlegym.com

Email The Little Gym of Huntersville/Lake Norman at {tlghuntersvillelakenormannc@thelittlegym.com} or call 704-948-7665 to enroll your child and let them know you heard about camp on MommyBKnowsBest.com

10 Things I Heart in Spring

10-Things-I-Heart-Spring

I decided that I would not write about Spring on my blog until it finally felt like Spring here in Charlotte, NC, however today, it’s going to be up in the 80s so I’m not sure if I’m allowed to write this considering the summer-like weather we are having. Then again, how can I not share with you things I’m hearting this Spring?!?!

Disneyland in the Spring MommyB
1. Traveling – Although we’re in the midst of packing for our move in June, we have been traveling a lot this Spring. We had the opportunity to visit Disneyland in California, where the weather was amazing and we had a BLAST! And we just returned from an amazing trip to Georgia where we visited the Georgia Aquarium and World of Coca-Cola (I’ll have trip reports on both soon!) Where have you traveled this Spring or where are you traveling to?

Build-a-Bear Spring2. New friends – We have been making lots of new friends this Spring! We recently started going to story hour at the church we’ve been attending and making new friends there AND in stuffed friend news, we got a new Spring Build-A-Bear friend who is an ADORABLE Soft & Sweet Lamb ($18) She has fluffy white fur that’s perfect for cuddling. Our little lamb is all dressed up for Spring and tea parties AND at Build-A-Bear you can also add scents so your furry friends smell oh-so-sweet, how cool is that?!?

3. Outside Fun – We are blessed to have a nice, flat, and decent size backyard so lately we’ve been spending a lot of time outside. If it’s nice out I’ll let Miss A do her homework outside and of course lots of chalk, bubbles, running, scooters/bikes, and water table play. How about you??

4. Spring Cleaning – I know this sounds soooo strange, but I really do love organizing and cleaning, even though these days I don’t have quite as much time as I’d like to do either. Luckily, the move gives me a great excuse to do a little bit of both. I’ve been trying out a few new cleaning products including some Method products and Nature’s Kloth.

We try to be a little more eco-friendly here and there and both of these products help. We’ve been using Nature’s Kloth instead of a sponge and replacing the way we clean with paper towels to create less waste. I love that it’s eco-friendly (biodegradable, washable over 300 times, made from cotton and plant fiber, and more) and is great for many uses inside and outside the house. I definitely feel better about cleaning when there isn’t a huge pile of used papertowels in my trash.

5. Healthy Kiddos – I am super thankful for healthy kiddos. Lately we’ve been pretty healthy especially considering that we’ve been flying and traveling a lot. We have a lot of friends who have not been so fortunate this Spring. For those uncomfortable fevers and painful colds and aches we give our girls Children’s Advil. For Lil’ C who does not do well with any sort of pain, this does the trick for us. I love that they have so many flavors (and dye-free versions) too since she doesn’t care for most medicine flavors. Plus, they have some fun activities and tips for parents on how to stay healthy.

Garden Lites Collage

We also love that our girls like healthy foods like Garden Lites. Miss A surprisingly enjoyed these gluten-Free, veggie muffins. They’re high in fiber, and low in fat. Miss A’s favorite flavor was: Zucchini Banana Chocolate Chip. They have loads more flavors and come in a box of 4 with an SRP of $3.99.

Lee Fashion Spring Capris

6. Spring Clothes!! – I love a good infinity scarf, especially the beautiful chevron one that one of my friends gave me for my birthday, but I really enjoy wearing comfy Spring clothes. I love wearing adorable maxi and sun dresses because they are so flowy and comfortable.

I am also loving the new Lee Spring collection that features bermuda shorts and capris that are comfortable while being dressy at the same time. If I need to dress up an outfit some of their capris and shorts come with adorable, fashionable belts as well. Here are a few of my other favorites from their collection:

Lee Spring Collection

7. Parties – I always love a good get-together and with the girls’ birthdays, holidays and end of school coming for us, Spring is always filled with fun parties and celebrations. We’ll have a small birthday get together for Miss A {since we went to Disneyland the girls aren’t getting their usual HUGE parties}, a class party for the end of the year {here’s an end of the year gift idea}, and loads of friends birthday parties.

Iesodo Video8. Good Message Movies – We were sent a couple of videos from Iesodo (pronounced Ya-Sa-Doe) that retells Bible stories with animated animals, mainly birds. My girls LOVED the videos and have been singing the catchy songs every day since we’ve watched them. We love sharing these videos with our friends because we know the language and content are appropriate for all viewers. Even if you have no religious affiliation, but want your children to learn good values, these videos promote wholesome character traits and morals and is good for children of any age.

9. Pasta Salad – Of course you can eat pasta salad anytime of year, but this is the season pasta salads shine! I really love cold, crisp salads with lots of veggies. What’s your favorite pasta salad recipe?

B girls with Genevive Goings Choo Choo Soul at Disneyland

10. Meeting Amazing People – Not that this is necessarily a Spring thing, but since we went to the Disney Social Media Moms Celebration, we were able to meet some pretty amazing people. One of our favorites though was Genevieve Goings from Choo Choo Soul with Genevieve.

Miss A says her favorite person/character she met the entire stay was Genevieve and we met a lot of people/characters so that says a lot. Of course we fell in love with Genevieve on Disney/Disney Junior with her Choo Choo Soul songs and realized she did more music for Disney as well as a round up of songs from Disney classic movies.

We’re excited to hear that her first Independent Children’s Album for pre-schoolers is called “Do You Know?” and releases June 3, with the first single “My Telephone Number Is” available NOW on iTunes. The album focuses on learning key fundamentals with Genevieve’s unique brand of “Kids Music with Soul.” I got an exclusive preview of the songs on her new album and wow!

My girls love to dance and sing and they get that from their mommy, this is one album you will not be able to contain the dancing. Our favorite songs are: “My Telephone Number Is” {great for helping your child learn your phone number, a MUST}, “Inside Voice” {which is rockin’ and rowdy in the best possible way and teaches kids when and where to use their inside/outside voice} and surprisingly, “Gotta Do My Business” {a potty song with swagger}.

I love when kids music is both appropriate and enjoyable and Genevieve definitely accomplishes that with the album. I can’t wait to buy a copy for our family and give one away on the site along with a few other goodies! In honor of Spring, I’m giving away a $25 Build-A-Bear gift card, 2 copies of Iesodo DVDs (Faith and Love) and once it’s available on June 3rd, a copy of Genevive Goings’ new album.

Happy amusement park season!! If you’re following me on Facebook, Instagram, and/or Twitter you know that my family just got back from an exciting trip to Disneyland with Disney Social Media Moms Celebration and had a blast.

The B family is no stranger to visiting theme parks and amusement parks, we’ve been all over the country between myself and the girls and of course DaddyB aka CoasterCritic and have our clear favorite and other parks that don’t necessarily live up to the hype.

All four of us were able to visit Tweetsie Railroad in North Carolina last year and really enjoyed our visit. I love how family-oriented and wholesome this park is and even that it’s nestled in the mountains. If you want to read about our previous visit head here: Family Getaway: Tweetsie Railroad Review.

We are excited about another visit this Spring/Summer and know the girls will enjoy it even more this year since Lil C is bigger. While we don’t live close enough to get our own Season Pass, I typically recommend if people think they’ll visit more than once that they consider getting one because of the perks and value.
