Valentine’s Day Gifts for the Practical Mom – Belk Gift Card Giveaway

This is a sponsored post on behalf of Belk.com

I tend to be a mom who asks for things for my home for Christmas, in fact, one year I put “new vacuum cleaner” on my Christmas wish list from my mom, no kidding. While I know it’s not necessarily the norm, I also know I am not the only mom out there asking for and really hoping she gets practical gifts.

This year, working with one of my favorite department stores, Belk.com I came up with some practical gift ideas for mom.

Valentine's Day Gifts for the Practical Mom - MommyB.jpg

Handbag or Wallet – Every mom needs a handbag or wallet, but how about getting her a cute designer wallet from Belk.com. I love that at Belk.com I can purchase great brands like Michael Kors, Lauren Ralph Lauren, Coach, and not break the bank.

{Pictured above: Lauren Ralph Lauren Thurlow Zip Around Leather Wallet}

Kitchen Appliances – Be careful on this one, some moms want anything other than kitchen or household supplies, but if you have a mom who has expressed interest, Belk.com carries a great line of appliances. If they like cooking or baking for their family they may enjoy a Calphalon No-Peek Waffle Maker, beautiful counter cannisters, or even appliances that will make entertaining easier.

Sheet and Bedding Sets – Every bed needs sheets and bedding, but instead of buying the usual, consider purchasing higher thread count, better quality sheets like the Hotel by Biltmore 800 Thread Count Sheets and maybe a few coordinating throw pillows. Practical and pretty!

Watches – Most practical moms are also Type-A moms and try to be on time {when it’s in their power}, so naturally a watch is a great way to tell time and keep moms on schedule. Belk.com offers so many options when it comes to watches, whether you want something classic, or something fun, or even something with a hint of whimsy and romance like the Betsey Johnson Rose Gold Tone Puffy Heart Watch pictured above. Definitely a great Valentine’s Day gift!

Beauty and Makeup – Choose everyday makeup and beauty products with a boost. If you know they typically wear brown eyeshadow, pick up this beautiful Bobbi Brown Rich Chocolate Eye Palette or treat them to a gift bag of their favorite facial cleanser and a few new products. If the practical mom in your life isn’t big on beauty products or makeup think about buying them something subtle, they may have a change of heart {I’ve done this several times with my own mom.}

Even though these gifts are sensible, they’re definitely not boring. This Valentine’s Day, head to Belk.com to make your Valentine’s Day gift purchases whether or not you’re shopping for a practical mom, funny dad, awesome kids, or someone else you really love.

And if you’re looking to splurge on that extra special person, check out Belk.com’s Valentine’s Day Gift Guide.

That’s not all, I’m giving one lucky MommyB Knows Best reader a chance to win a $75 Belk gift card. You won’t get it in time for Valentine’s Day, but I’m sure you can find some great ways to spend it!!

Action Baby Carrier Guest Review & Giveaway

There are an overwhelming number of baby products on the market. Before I had my first child, I wasn’t sure what I needed and what I (and the baby) could survive without.

I quickly learned many of the “most have items” big baby stores and some well-meaning parents will tell you that you need are not really necessary. But there is one item I wish I had known about sooner than I did – an ergonomic baby carrier.

I’ve used several brands and types of carriers with my children from the time they were infants until now (they are 2 and 4 years old). By far, my favorite has been soft structured carriers (SSC).

My 4-year-old son is not as big of a fan of babywearing as my 2-year-old daughter. She has always loved being worn and she still does. Babywearing has saved my sanity many times, particularly when she was younger as she liked to be held – a lot. By wearing her, I’ve been able to do things I need to do around the house, play with my son, run errands, etc.

There’s a very popular ERGOnomic carrier that has several versions of its SSC (lightweight, organic, etc.) and I’ve owned several of them.

While I love those carriers, as my children get older, taller and heavier, I haven’t found them to be as comfortable for me.

I’m very excited to have found the toddler carrier from Action Baby Carrier, a small, Michigan-based business that hand makes their quality carriers in the U.S.A.

palmerside-2

Their toddler carrier is 3 inches taller in the body than their regular carrier (similar in sizing to most SSCs), the hood is an inch longer and the shoulder webbing is 2 inches smaller (because they are used mostly for back carries and this offers a tighter fit).

As children get bigger, the traditional SSCs don’t go as high on their backs or across their bottoms. I noticed a significant difference in how secure my toddlers (I tested it with both of them in it) seemed to feel in Acton Baby’s toddler carrier. The kids enjoy being in the carrier and seem to be more comfortable in the toddler carrier than a standard SSC.

Although the carrier is larger, it’s not bulky or heavy like some soft structured carriers. It’s actually fairly lightweight and it folds up to a very reasonable size.

The buckles on the carrier are strong and sturdy. The waist band is generous and is more likely to fit a plus size wearer without an extension. The body of the carrier is well-made and it comes in solid colors as well as prints. The company recently introduced four new fun prints, including the popular chevron pattern, elephants and classic cars. Their prints are classy, not “loud” and many of them are gender neutral.

Because of the additional sizing on the toddler vs. standard carrier, the weight of my children (30lbs and 39lbs) definitely felt as if it was distributed more evenly, which is very important to me as I have lower back issues.

Action Baby Carrier’s toddler carrier is designed for children 15-45lbs (their standard carrier is for 8-40lbs).

The only real negative for me with the Action Baby Carrier is that the chest strap was not as comfortable as I would like and it dug into my arm pits a bit. However, I’m hopeful that as I get accustomed to using this brand vs. others, I will learn to adjust the straps to a fit that works best for me.

Overall, Action Baby Carrier’s toddler carrier is wonderfully made in the U.S. and is reasonably priced ($114 – their standard carrier is $98). The additional sizing makes it a more comfortable fit for the toddlers and those who wear them, including men (my husband found this toddler carrier to be more comfortable than standard SSCs).

Action Baby Carrier is giving MommyB Knows Best readers a one time 10% discount limited offer. Enter the code “mbkb8j7fabc” now through February 28th to save on full-price items only. They’re also giving away one of their awesome carriers to one lucky reader!

Action Baby Carrier provided their toddler carrier for this review, however the opinions expressed are the author’s honest assessment of the product.

Jamie BioAfter a 13 year full-time public relations/writing career, Jamie K. now has the privilege to be home with her 4-year-old son and 2-year-old daughter. Chocolate regularly “calls” her name, she’s forever going on a new “diet” every Monday and she’s always taking on more projects than one human can manage (this description likely fits many of you!). She currently lives in Northern Virginia, her 4th “home” state in 5 years thanks to her officer husband’s Air Force career.

Shop maurices and Support the American Cancer Society

I received compensation in the form of product and gift cards in return for spreading the word about this great cause and administering and hosting a giveaway on my site.

Are you a conscientious shopper? Are you mindful of where your money is going and do you seek out purchases that have a “greater good” behind them?

Several great brands have programs where profits from sales are donated to a charitable cause, which makes the purchase that much more meaningful. It’s rare, however that you see a retail store donate more than 50% of a product sale going directly to help support as well-known, a non-profit organization as the American Cancer Society. However, that is exactly exactly how women’s fashion retailer, maurices is getting involved this holiday season.

maurices donates to American Cancer Society.png

This 2013 maurices Holiday Necklace includes three fashionable necklaces packaged together and comes in both silver and gold. Retailing for $12, the company will contribute a minimum of $6.00 from the sale price of every necklace to the American Cancer Society to support its mission to finish the fight against cancer by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back.

This year, through sales of the new Holiday Necklace, the company hopes to raise more than $400,000 helping to make a difference in the lives of those families impacted by cancer.

We all know someone who has been directly affected by cancer and it’s a cause that is extremely important to the maurices family,” said Brad Hartmann SVP, Chief Creative Officer. “Holidays are a time for giving and we are excited to introduce the latest addition to our accessories collection and offer consumers a gift that gives back in a big way.”

For the last nine years, maurices partnership with the American Cancer Society has raised more than $8 million for the organization from combined fundraising efforts within their retail stores through the sales of custom designed jewelry, in-store fundraisers and corporate financial contributions.  Now through January 5, 2014 (or while supplies last), maurices invites consumers to join in the fight against cancer by purchasing the necklace set at one of the more than 875 stores nationwide or online.

Building Confidence for Biracial Girls – Yay9! Review

This is a review and review samples were used in this review.

As my girls get older I want them to know how beautiful they are, because they are created in God’s image. Through books and talking with several biracial parents and biracial people themselves I know that often times biracial children have a hard time figuring out who they are. I know I am only a small piece in their puzzle to loving themselves, but as a mom teaching them self worth and confidence in who they are is one of the more important values I want them to own.

I’ve tried to learn tips and tricks for styling their hair and feel like I do a pretty good job with the resources I have. DaddyB and I tell them all the great things not only about their looks but about the people they are. We often have dates with each child on their own to connect and let them know how special they are. Of course we do also focus and celebrate their uniqueness.

When Miss A was about 3 I stumbled on this Sesame Street video:

i-love-my-hair-tee

I was so excited to show it to Miss A and also bought her this really cool shirt to go with it: {pictured on right}

And of course as Lil C grew up she got this as a hand-me-down and loves wearing it. We always ask the girls which one they are or is their favorite.

Another fun company that celebrates diversity and being who you are, was brought to me by another awesome blogger is Yay9!.

Yay9! is a company that wants to be an experience for little girls who celebrate their own style. The characters Joyce, LuLu and Violet represent each one of the company founders’ girls and their unique personalities. Not only that, but they are also celebrating diversity and encouraging my girls to love their hair, skin color, and their style.

Addye Durant, the creator of Yay9!, has a vision to make Joyce, LuLu and Violet part of a movement and with our support, expand their projects and brand.

I love reading the about pages for businesses and that is no different for  Yay9!. You can tell from the get-go that they are a fun company and this transfers to their products as well. I love that the brand is great for little girls, tweens, and teens too.

We had the opportunity to check out a couple of their tees and I thought the packaging of the shirts was very creative. They were wrapped like candy and included really cool and large hair bobble hair ties. These shirts do run very small so I suggest ordering big since they do have some shrinkage too. The girls LOVED the designs can you tell?!?!

Yay9 Collage MommyB.jpg

How do you teach your children confidence?

Be sure to head Yay9!’s website to read more, shop, and check out the Joyce, Violet, and Lulu in action.

I also encourage you to visit their Indiegogo page and if you like their vision, make your contribution, and get your perk.

We received review samples of Yay9! products in order to give honest opinions. Review samples are placed into consideration and are only posted if it is something we believe is important to share about. We like Yay9! however we understand your opinions may vary. Thank you for being considerate and having an open mind while reading this post.

Top 5 Reasons to Get Spoiled by Fragments.com

This is a sponsored post by Fragments.com, any opinions given in this post are my own, honest thoughts.

Every once and a while it’s nice to get spoiled, whether it’s a day at the spa, love letters from our favorite people, or shiny, pretty things. What “entitles” us to being spoiled? That may vary depending on the gift giver but luckily, Fragments.com showcases amazing pieces that will fit every occasion.

Fragments.com is a “finely curated gallery of fine and fashion jewelry, known for discovering and launching the careers of today’s most celebrated designers.” For a complete list of designers click here: www.fragments.com/designers

Here are my Top 5 Reasons to Get Spoiled by Fragments.com {in no particular order}:

Spoiled Celebration – Birthdays, Anniversaries, or congratulations in order?? Browse the Fine Jewelry Collection of Fragments.com and pick out a piece or two that will be just as special as your gift recipient.

Spoiled Mommy – Being a mother myself, I’ll admit I’m biased, however I think all moms, whether they are mother’s by way of birthing a child, adoption, fostering, or any other means, deserves a little bling to commemorate the blessing of being called, “Mom.”

Spoiled Dedication – Do you know a woman who is completely giving of herself? One who is always thinking of others, and not focused on herself? Sometimes amazing women deserve to be recognized with love, kind words, thankfulness. Consider thanking her with a beautiful ring or pair of earrings.

Spoiled Remembrance – Often times in life there are people whom we would like to hold on to their memory. If gemstones, or jewels remind you of a certain loved one, purchasing a piece that accents that stone will help you take that person along with you as you live life and remember theirs.

Spoiled Love – Is her “Love Language” receiving gifts?? Sometimes we don’t need a special occasion or reason to spoil someone we love, sometimes we just want to say thank you with a gift. If you know her favorite Fragments.com pieces by those she’s pinned on Pinterest or liked on Facebook, consider choosing one to surprise her with.

Some of my favorite pieces come from both Fragments.com’s Fine Jewelry section, and also their Fashion Jewelry as well. Here are a few that I chose to share with you:

MommyB Knows Best Favorite Fragments Jewelry

Who do you know that deserves to be spoiled? Which Fragments.com piece is your favorite??

All opinions expressed in the above post are my own honest opinions. Yours may vary.

Add Color to your Summer with Beau Ties

Thank you Beau Ties for providing me with great products to review for this blog post.

Happy Summer Solstice. Today is officially the first day of summer, did you know?!? I love all the seasons for different reasons of course. My favorite things about summer are fresh foods, travelling, swimming at the pool, making memories, and how colorful it is.

I’m especially loving the coral, yellow, and pinks, being the girlie girl that I am, so any sun dresses or accessories that I can find I am scooping up, which is one of the many reasons I loved the Sandy Lane Tote Bag from Beau Ties LTD. Beau Ties LTD. is more well-known for their bow ties and neck ties, however they also have a few things in their women’s line that I adore.

I like to be prepared, over prepared, so I often pack too much and have several bags in my van at one time each for a different purpose, so having a carry-all for the summer is a MUST for me, sometimes though the woven beach bags are hard to carry because they only have a hand loop rather than a strap, other times finding a big enough bag is an issue.

The Sandy Lane Tote Bag is the perfect size bag, it’s super durable while also being cute. The light colors make it perfect for the summer sun and there’s even a front pocket for me to store my phone, keys or pool passes. The straps are comfortable to wear, even when my bag is packed to the brim, AND it folds down very nicely and doesn’t take up much space in my suitcase when we’re travelling. Loooooveeeee!

Beau Ties LTD Tote Collage MommyB

I took the bag on a few trips recently, one to my Atlantic City #jerseylove trip and carried it all over, on the beach, in the resort, and in lots of rain, and I couldn’t ask for more in a bag. The bag itself does not have a zippered compartment, although I have found that most beach style totes do not have the zippered compartment standard either. I usually carry my wallet around rather than loose money or credit cards so that was not an issue for me, but something worthy of mention.

The Beau Ties LTD. tote bags currently come in 4 different fabric accent choices, all of which are great for summer. The bags come in two different sizes, Small and Large. If you’re not an over packer like me, or using it for shorter outing, you may prefer the Small size. Price varies depending on which size tote you choose and whether or not you add a monogram to the bag {yes they personalize, perfect for gifts!!!!}

I would highly recommend using Beau Ties LTD to brighten your summer. Check out their awesome totes that you won’t want to leave home without {trust me!}. Don’t forget Beau Ties LTD also carries a variety of products including neckties, bow ties, men’s pants, shirts, women’s accessories and more. Here are a few of my colorful summer favorites:

Check out Beau Ties LTD’s full line of products on their website here: www.beautiesltd.com and visit their Facebook and Twitter pages too.

What’s your favorite thing about summer?? Which item would you choose to purchase from Beau Ties LTD??

I received Beau Ties LTD products in order to facilitate my review. All thoughts and opinions in this post are my own, honest thoughts, your opinions may vary.

For the healthy mom:

I love Edible Arrangements fresh selection of quality fruits. Their Mother’s Day products come in beautiful, reusable vases, and you can also add a stuffed animal or balloons as well. This gift is great because it can be delivered right to her door and she won’t have to worry about how she’s going to work off those extra calories!!!

For the earth conscious mom:

We all have one, two, or one hundred of the plastic reusable totes, but be you be true cotton bags are adorable, washable, and inspirational. For an additional fee you can personalize the tote and add mom’s name. Best of all you can fill with a few of mom’s favorite things, like a book, bath products, her favorite candies, what a nice way to spoil her.

This tote without personalization is $28. Check out more totes and other be you be true products here: beyoubetrue.com

For the mom who loves to read:

We all need a little humor in our lives. Lost in Suburbia: A Momoir: How I Got Pregnant, Lost Myself, and Got My Cool Back in the New Jersey Suburbs by Tracy Beckerman is all about the many things in motherhood that make us laugh. Any mom is sure to relate to Tracy’s stories of kids mistaking adults for being pregnant, fishing toys out of the toilet and more!

Find Tracy’s book on Amazon.com

For the mom who wants to smile:

I know Invisalign isn’t an obvious Mother’s Day gift, however the more I chat with mom friends, other moms at my daughter’s school, and people in playgroups I hear mom’s wishing they could “fix” their smile. Some moms had braces as a child but didn’t wear their retainer, some of their families couldn’t afford braces when they were little, and some have seen overcrowding issues as they get older.

As a mom, often times we put our own health and appearance on the back burner to care for our children. If you know a mom who would be interested in making her smile shine as bright as her personality, consider arranging a consultation to see if she’s a good fit for the Invisalign treatment program.

Invisalign pricing ranges depending on the case. Average treatment is around $3,000-$5,000 but is often less depending on length of treatment. Find a doctor here: Invisalign Doctor Locator

For the mom who wants to give back:

Prosperity Candles are beautiful handmade candles manufactured by female entrepreneurs in and from distressed regions of the globe. My favorite Mother’s Day gift is the Gem of a Woman gift set that comes with a uniquely scalloped bowl soy candle and a fair trade summer scarf, both made by underprivileged women from around the globe.

Each set comes with a gift box and story card, and burns for 40 hours. There are three scents to choose from: Himalayan Bamboo, Magnolia Blossom, and Sea Mist. Each candle/scarf set retails for $54.00 Purchase yours here: Gem of a Woman gift set.

There you have it, a few great ideas for Mother’s Day gifts. Now what will you get your mom for her special day??

This is a compilation of products that I have received for review, and products that I have not personally tried out but think are a great idea for Mother’s Day. In any regard I chose these specific gifts on my own as Mother’s Day gifts that I thought would be a good fit for shoppers. Any opinions in this post are my own, honest words written with integrity.

My Top 5 CafePress Item Picks

I’ll admit, I love customized anything. I’m not a super collector of it, but I love browsing through image after image of cool stuff looking for fun themes or even gifts for other people. Recently, for my birthday I asked for a mustache shirt, yes I’ve joined the craze, maybe a little earlier than some, but definitely not a first adopter of the ‘stache.

cafepress-us

CafePress.com is no exception to my window shopping. I love looking through their items and finding the perfect gifts for friends and family that hopefully will be something they love, and also remember me by. It’s been really cool to see  the site grow and offer even more products, although this really puts a damper on my night when I realize I’ve spent the entire night on just one website. Ooopsie!!!

So, I decided to write a list of my favorite things on CafePress right now, and then I realized that 1,002 things were probably too many to list…okay there were really more but give a girl a break! Just for you, I narrowed my list down to an itty-bitty 5 items that I adore, and here they are, in no particular order:

Elephant Blanket1. Okay, maybe this really is my favorite, but I love elephants. This cute bedding would work well for a boy or a girl (or a parent, ahem*) and because it’s black and white would go with any color scheme, but more importantly: ELEPHANTS!! Nuff said.

Big Sister Shirt2. Next up, how could a mom of two kids, much-less two girls, not love baby & kids clothing?!?! When I was expecting Lil’ C, we actually used a, “Big Sister” shirt to announce our pregnancy to our friends and some family too. It was a fun way for the big sister to participate, although I’m not sure Miss A knew what she was getting herself into, or maybe she did! {CafePress offers these type of shirts for any older, younger, middle sibling, new aunt, expecting mom. Definitely check out their selection.

frogprincessfivepng_525_x_525_flat_cards3. Lil’ C’s 3rd birthday is coming soon, and we’re throwing her a Princess themed birthday party. After checking out all of the invitations on CafePress, I like this one the most, I love the princess and frog story and theme. Isn’t she a cutie?!

Glasses iPhone Cover4. ‘Member how I mentioned above my undying love for the ‘stache? Yeah, well CafePress has no shortage of mustach-erie, just type in, “mustache” in the search box and see what you come up with. Here’s one of my favorites amongst the bunch because it not only showcases the mustache, but glasses too!!! I heart this one the most out of a selection of many iPhone 5 Cases. {wink, wink, hint, hint, ahem}

MommyB Mug5. And last, but not least, I love the fact that CafePress offers the option to personalize your own items (and not have to buy 100-500 of them). Of course if I came up with a personalized product, it would have to be something like this. Did you expect anything less?? 🙂

There you have it, I was good, I stuck to my 5, and hopefully gave you some ideas and inspiration too. And who knows, maybe some day there will be a MommyB Knows Best mug, even if it’s just for me to enjoy my coffee.

What are your favorite CafePress items?? Do you ever shop there, and if so, for who??

This is a compensated post, all thoughts and opinions are my own honest responses, yours may vary.

New and Improved Peek Away {Guest Review and Giveaway}

Peek Away Logo

I’m jealous of nursing mamas who seem to easily master breastfeeding without the need for additional gear like nursing covers and pillows.

But for those of us who need or desire these products, there’s a product that functions as a pillow, nursing cover, change pad and purse all-in-one – the Peek Away 4 in 1 Essentials Nursing Kit.

I reviewed the original Peek Away kit on a Mommy B guest post about nine months ago. Recently, Peek Away unveiled a new (and definitely improved) kit.

The Peek Away is 14.5″L x 6.5″H x 5.5″ when it’s folded. It has a strap that clips onto it for carrying it like a purse. Tucked inside is a nursing cover that features a “rounded” collar so you can peek in on babe while he or she is nursing. It unfolds into a changing pad that’s fairly thick and cushy. At the end of the pad, there’s also a pocket you can stuff diapers into and a reusable wipe container you can easily open one-handed while holding onto baby. There are also two additional pockets you can use for keys, your cell phone, credit cards, etc.

Peek Away Pic 2

It was designed by a husband and wife who found it was difficult to travel as frequently as they did while conveniently nursing and having the essentials they needed easily accessible.

The original Peek Away had several design flaws including a short pad, bad stitching and poor quality materials, among other concerns. The owners of Peek Away were fully aware of the quality concerns with the original kit which they said were a result of the manufacturer not following the company’s specifications for materials or workmanship.

The company worked with the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) to secure a manufacturer to redesign the product. Based on my experience with the original version and the latest version, they have successfully addressed areas I noted needed improvement in my previous review for Mommy B and more.

  • Straps – The previous version only had one strap. If you wanted to use it to secure the pillow around your waist to prop baby on, you obviously couldn’t use it on your nursing cover at the same time. The pillow now has its own removable strap and the nursing cover has a “built in” adjustable strap.
  • Changing pad – The length of the pad has been extended, making it a much more practical size to change a squirming baby. The height of the pillow is also higher now and the foam is much firmer. The original Peek Away that I keep in my car is much “squishier” and when folded, doesn’t hold its shape well. Also, the top of the improved Peek Away pad (the part that touches baby) is now lined with canvas and the back side is made with neoprene.
  • Integrated wipes container – Quality of the plastic and the snap top on the wipes container seems much more durable. The lid on the original Peek Away actually broke off mine the first time I opened it.
  • Fabric – The prints for the previous version were bright, pink or green floral, which a mama who likes more subdued prints would not likely love. The new prints include a classy black and white pattern, trendy brown and a gray with subtle flowers. The thickness on the nursing cover has also been improved but is still lightweight.

Peek Away picAfter using the original Peek Away for nearly a year, I’m excited to see this much-improved version of a kit that is practical and convenient for nursing mamas on-the-go. My only regret is that I didn’t have this version during the early days of nursing my second child as the improvements that were made indeed make this a much better product.

The latest version is much worthier of the $47 price tag whereas the original version definitely was not. You can purchase Peek Away on their website or at several retailers across the country.
