Breaking News – CVS/pharmacy Goes Tobacco-Free and Stops Selling Tobacco Products

I can’t say I’m not elated about the HUGE stance CVS/pharmacy is taking by not selling tobacco products starting this Fall. As the daughter of smoking parents, they know how I feel, and while I know it’s a hard habit to break, I love the reasons behind CVS/pharmacy’s big tobacco free decision and look forward to a healthier America and am so glad a great brand is taking a HUGE step in the right direction.

CVS Tobacco Free MommyB

CVS Caremark’s corporate mission is focused on helping put people on a path to better health. This morning, CVS Caremark announced that they will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at their more than 7,600 CVS/pharmacy stores by October 1, 2014.

“Now more than ever, pharmacies are on the front lines of health care, becoming more involved in chronic disease management to help patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. All of these conditions are made worse by smoking, which is the leading cause of premature disease and death in the U.S., with more than 480,000 deaths annually. Because of this, this is the right thing for us to do and something we need to do for our customers.

Our decision to stop selling tobacco products is consistent with the positions taken by the American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association and American Pharmacists Association that have all publicly opposed tobacco sales in retail outlets with pharmacies.”

In addition to removing tobacco products and cigarettes for sale in their stores, this Spring CVS Caremark will be launching a national smoking cessation program with the goal of helping millions of Americans quit smoking.

Big thumbs up for this initiative and who knows maybe other drugstores will follow suit and help the 7 out of 10 smokers that want to stop smoking.

Here’s to a healthier America. Mom & Dad if you’re reading this you know what I’m thinking…….

The opinions and thoughts expressed in this post are my own. I was not compensated in any way by CVS/pharmacy to write about this. Because it is a topic that is personal and lays heavy on my heart I chose to bring this message to you. I work with CVS/pharmacy and believe they are a great brand and have been a customer for years and will continue to be especially if their direction continues to help others get healthy and stay healthy.

NERGIA – The Healthier Energy Supplement for Busy Moms

This is a sponsored post all opinions are my own.

Have you ever been called, “SuperMom” because you’re the mom that goes above and beyond when it comes to your job? Do people ever ask you, “how do you do it all??” While we know that none of us really “do it all”, it definitely takes long days and loads of energy to keep up with our children, our spouses, our homes, and possibly jobs outside the home as well {paid and unpaid}. Let’s face it, we live pretty active lives.

Sometimes I joke that my girls have surplus energy because they’re taking it from me, but in reality, since I write at night {it just may be morning by now, shhh!}, and am mom during the day, I know my energy deficiency comes from lack of proper sleep. Where does your energy deficiency lie??

Of course I highly recommend getting as much sleep as possible, and there’s no reviewing that on the blog it’s just a fact that our bodies need sleep, but sometimes even when we do get enough sleep, there are other reasons and factors why we may need a little extra energy in our lives. Sometimes our bodies just need a little refresher or an extra boost, especially if we are active and on-the-go all day non-stop.

For each person, their pick-me-up of choice may be different, but here’s a great, 100% natural alternative to energy shots and other energy supplements that are currently on the market that you may want to consider.

ENERGIA Natural Energy Shots

Meet America’s Naturals’ 100% Natural Energy shot. NERGIA contains organic, sustainably harvested ingredients including: Guarana seeds, Açaí berries and Catuaba bark. Instead of using preservatives, they pasteurize their product, avoiding artificial sweeteners and artificial colors. Not to mention that NERGIA uses recyclable glass bottles ensuring safe consumption for you.

Check out what health-conscious, active women are saying about their experience with NERGIA in this video: http://vimeo.com/78847721

If you’re looking for a natural, healthier energy boost for your day, visit www.nergia.com. NERGIA can currently be purchased at competitive pricing with other energy supplements at GNC.com and GNC stores in New York City, but will be coming to a GNC and other local stores near you.

What activity or time of day makes you feel the most tired?

This is a sponsored post in conjunction with NERGIA. All opinions and thoughts expressed in this post are my own. Since I write about things that are related to my family and my husband and I both need lots of energy I thought this would be a great, natural product to share with you. Your opinions may vary.

Review Twinlab CleanSeries Whey Protein Isolate

Twinlab Clean Series Whey Protein Isolate Review

Since deciding to get in shape for my wedding almost 9 years ago, I’ve had more brands and flavors of whey protein than you could imagine. More recently though, I haven’t tried a new product as I’ve been sticking with my usuals. So, I was interested in trying out Twinlab’s new Clean Series Whey Protein Isolate.

Packaging
Twinlab Clean Series Whey Protein Isolate ReviewI’ve used many Twinlab products over the years. Their once recognizable gray and black tubs of powder have been re-branded and the Clean Series packing sports a sleeker looking silver and orange theme. Across the board, consumers are more discerning about what goes in their bodies and it makes sense that this sentiment would affect the nutritional product world. Labels stating that the protein is Non-GMO, Certified Gluten Free, and even that it’s been tested for banned substances will insure athletes and average workout joes and jills alike that they’re getting a safe, quality product. It’s also noted that it’s low in lactose and has a low glycemic index which are two more positives.

What’s in it?
I received a 1.5 pound tub of Clean Series Whey Protein Isolate. It has 21 scoops of protein at 23 grams per serving. Each serving has 110 calories, only 4 grams of carbohydrates, and 0 grams of fat. Whey Protein Isolate (from milk) is the very first ingredient. This is a good indicator that you’re not getting a lot of filler and you’re getting the best type of protein. Isolate proteins are easier for your body to absorb than whey protein concentrates and other whey blends.

Price
Clean Series Whey Protein Isolate is $44.99 on the Twinlab website. GNC’s website has it for $29.99 which is likely closer to what you’d see it for in stores. That’s a bit steep in my opinion for 21 servings, but I will say that the work put into the testing, certifications, and the bonuses of ease of digestion may make it worth it for some.

How Does it Taste?
I tried the Vanilla Wave flavor of the Clean Series Whey Protein Isolate. It was very light and not too sweet. It also wasn’t very flavorful; which at times can be a good thing. Flavor often means adding sugar and can also make the drink feel heavier. It isn’t meant to be a meal replacement shake as much as other products out there, so I thought the light taste was right on par with what I expected. It’s neutral vanilla flavoring make it a strong candidate to go into a fruit smooth in place of yogurt or milk.

I had it before workouts and first thing in the morning since I typically want something with more carbs after work outs. It’s a good overall product that I’d recommend for those looking for a quality protein from an established brand that’s focused on creating products you can trust.

New Products and Programs from CVS/pharmacy Headquarters

If you follow my Instagram, Facebook or Twitter feeds, you know that at the end of September, I had the opportunity to visit CVS/pharmacy headquarters once again this year and sit in on informational sessions, and enjoy some great branded events, with some amazing bloggers.

CVS/pharmacy Bloggers

If you missed last year’s trip report head HERE. It’s been a busy month and I learned so much about great new products and programs that CVS/pharmacy is or will be rolling out. In this post you’ll see highlights of my visit and learn about these products and programs for yourself. In the meantime, make sure you’re subscribed to my blog by putting your email address in the appropriate box in the sidebar, that way you won’t miss my upcoming CVS/pharmacy product and program posts.

Whats Your DealFirst I’ll start with myWeekly ads and deals. Since this is something I mentioned to you in my post: CVS/pharmacy Announces myWeekly Ad Customized Savings I won’t go over all the details {if you want those click on the link I just mentioned}. But I will tell you that for those of us who aren’t hardcore couponers, this is perfect for the shopper in us who wants to save on things we are already planning on purchasing without having to spend hours of hard work getting that deal. Kudos to CVS/pharmacy for making it easy for shoppers like us to save!

Check out this funny, celeb-filled video showcasing a few different myWeekly ad suggestions. What’s Your Deal???

Joan Rivers cracks me up!

For the health-minded side of CVS/pharmacy, I enjoyed trying to decipher what was a health FACT and MYTH out of the health statements we were given by the CVS MinuteClinic crew. I actually learned a good bit of new information about MinuteClinic including:

  • Available in over 650 clinics in more than 25 states
  • Holds a 95% patient satisfaction rate
  • Staffed by Nurse Practitioners and Physicians Assistants who are able to treat, diagnose, and prescribe medication.
  • No appointments needed and services are available evenings and weekends
  • Known for acute services, but provide wellness services, physical screenings and more.

MinuteClinic Myth vs Fact MommyB.jpg

{Pictured above is Christine Young, I heart her, go check out her blog From Diapers to Dating}

I love how convenient MinuteClinic is, especially being a busy mom with two little girls. Sometimes I want my kiddos to get feeling better right away. We love our physician, but illness doesn’t always work on our doctor’s office timelines. Can I get an amen?!?

Of course most of the bloggers at the event were women, not all, but most, and we were pampered with some amazing Salma Hayek Nuance beauty products. If you haven’t heard of her line Nuance you are truly missing out my friend.Salma Hayek Nuance CVS

Nuance products are specially formulated with natural, exotic ingredients that have stood the test of time. It’s said that a number of ingredients used in Nuance products were the same used by Salma’s very own grandmother.

This year, Salma Hayek’s Nuance launched a few new products including: Nuance Salma Hayek Hair Care with rich ingredients like flax seed to strengthen and protect hair, and Nuance Salma Hayek Skincare including cleansers, BB Cream and more with each item under a $19.99 price point. Love beauty at a bargain!

Last but not least, on this fun media trip, we were treated to Christmas with CVS/pharmacy. Not only was the ambiance set for holiday celebrations, but we enjoyed a yummy Christmas morning breakfast complete with gingerbread lattes and peppermint mochas. Normally I’m not one for celebrating holidays too soon, but with the Christmas tree {and for those of you who celebrate Hannukah, the minora}, stockings, and Christmas lights really got me excited for the holidays to be here already.

CVS Christmas Holiday Gifts MommyB

We were also able to soak in the experience by doing a White Elephant swap of some of CVS/pharmacy’s soon-to-be “hot holiday gift” items. We also got to preview products that will be on “his” “hers” “kids” and other family members’ lists this Christmas and I got some great ideas for family and friends of my own.

CVS/pharmacy has even put together a few lists to get you started and help you out with shopping for those awesome people in your life you’d like to gift this Christmas season: Holiday Shopping at CVS/pharmacy.

I want to thank each of you who read my blog for your support. If you weren’t stopping by, reading my posts, commenting on Facebook, and entering giveaways I wouldn’t be able to work from home doing something I truly enjoy.

Thanks also to CVS/pharmacy for an amazing media event, lots of product samples to try out and tell my readers about, and of course the inside scoop on CVS/pharmacy’s newest products and programs coming out.

I was not compensated for this post. I did receive a trip to CVS/pharmacy headquarters for this event and work closely with the brand throughout the year on non-paid and paid projects. Any opinions in this post are my own. My family have been brand-loyal to CVS/pharmacies long before I was a blogger. Your opinions may vary.

Sleep Apnea and Treatment through Oral Appliance Therapy

Woman Sleeping
This is a sponsored informational review.

Do you or does someone you know suffer from sleep apnea? In case you’re not familiar, sleep apnea is a common disorder where a person’s breathing is interrupted during sleep. Currently, more than 12 to 18 million U.S. adults suffer from sleep apnea.

Woman SleepingDepending on the severity, this pause in breathing can vary from a few seconds to a few minutes, and as you can imagine could be very hazardous to one’s health. Sleep apnea is potentially life-threatening condition that can also lead to:

• Congestive heart failure

• Stroke

• High blood pressure

• Heart disease

• Diabetes

• Obesity

• Depression

• Impotence

If you have not been diagnosed, but think you or someone in your family may have sleep apnea signs to look for include loud, frequent and habitual snoring, and breathing that stops abruptly during sleep. You may notice being more tired during the day or not feeling like you got a full night’s rest. Consult a sleep physician if any of the sleep apnea warning signs are present in your household.

One solution for sleep apnea that you may not have heard of is oral appliance therapy or OAT. There are more than 80 different FDA-approved oral appliances and are diagnosed based on the patient’s specific needs.

Myerson - OAT

To understand oral appliance therapy more indepth, Dr. Demko, DMD, president of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine provides a few key details:

Patients interested in OAT should first see a sleep physician to be diagnosed with sleep apnea, if they haven’t already. Once diagnosed, they can then go online to LocalSleepDentist.com to find a dentist in their area who can help treat snoring and sleep apnea.

Oral appliances are very effective in treating sleep apnea because they maintain an open, unobstructed airway for patients. Depending on the patient’s needs, the device will either hold the tongue in place or support the jaw in a forward position to keep the patient’s airway open and provide a more refreshing sleep.

I’ve noticed that many patients find oral appliances more comfortable to sleep with at night and appreciate the ease with which they can travel when using an oral device, as opposed to the larger CPAP units.

Potential side effects of OAT are generally mild in nature and improve within a few weeks. They may include
excessive salivation, muscle and tooth discomfort and occasional joint discomfort. Major adverse effects of OAT
are uncommon but can include slight tooth movement, permanent changes in a patient’s bite, ongoing muscle
soreness or loosening of dental restorations.

AADSM logo_NEWIf someone in your home home exhibits any sleep apnea indicators, be sure to visit localsleepdentist.com to learn more about OAT.

The American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine is a non-profit organization of more than 2,800 dental
professionals worldwide that treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnea in their patients. This is a sponsored post, I have not used OAT myself, but encourage whole family health and thought this was good information to pass along.

Giving my Family Power in the Shower with Waterpik #spon

Are you fast or slow? Do you like it hot or cold? Do you sing? These questions are all about preferences, but preferences of what? Showering! Just as with anything in our multiracial family, each of the 4 of us, DaddyB, MommyB {that’s me}, Miss A, and Lil C have our preferences of how we like things, and that’s no different with how we wash our hair and bodies.

Waterpik gives each member in my family the power to choose their shower experience. Maybe you can relate to one of our experiences!

Waterpik Showerhead.jpg

The busy mom – With my busy schedule my typical showers are about 4 minutes, so I want to make my showering as efficient as possible and rarely have time to relax and enjoy a shower. With Waterpik’s 5 Custom Spray Settings showerhead I choose the Full-Body Spray. Since I know I won’t be in the shower enough to waste too much water adn just want to “get the job done”.

The manual labor dad – While DaddyB’s day job isn’t a physical job, on the weekends he’s very active outdoors. From mowing the lawn, to pulling weeds, and trimming bushes, his upper back is in need of some TLC, not to mention after being so sweaty he really needs a shower. In this case, Waterpik’s NEW Circular Massage spray setting comes in handy to not only wash off the dirt but also give DaddyB some relief.

The newbie shower girl – We’ve given our girls baths since they came home from the hospital. It wasn’t until lately that Miss A started asking for showers instead of baths. She’s not a big fan of water in her face, which we’re working on, but the Waterpik showerhead certainly gives us the option to start her at a Mist and work up to a higher setting once she gets more comfortable in the shower. I love that I can easily change the settings by turning the knob on the handle.

The non shower girl – As I mentioned above, our girls normally take baths, and we don’t mind, but when it comes to washing their beautiful, curly fros, showers come in handy. The showerhead comes with a flexible 5-foot hose so I can use it as a hand-held sprayer, which is great for washing biracial hair and making sure all the hair cleaning products come out of her hair without her having to sit in the water from the bath.

I could totally see this product working great for other families who have different needs than ours as well, and that’s the glory of the power in the shower, you customize it to your needs day-to-day.

Purchase your Waterpik Medallion 5-Spray Hand Showerhead at a Home Depot near you or go online and make your purchase. Make sure you get your $10 Rebate from Waterpik.

I’m excited to be giving away a $100 Home Depot Gift Card so you can purchase your very own Waterpik showerhead like the one I received. Make sure you reply at the end of this post!!

We all have our morning routines; taking a shower is one of them. The NEW Waterpik PowerSpray+™ EasySelect® Hand Held Shower Head makes showering easier than ever.  From the 5 shower settings including the water-saving trickle feature to the anti-clog nozzle, this shower head has it all!  Do you want to experience it for yourself?   Answer the question below for a chance to win a $100 Home Depot gift card to purchase your new Waterpik PowerSpray+™ EasySelect® Hand Held Shower HeadSweepstakes Rules.

What’s App-enning?? App Series: What’s Up Doc?

Thank you to Disney Junior for providing access to the Doc McStuffin’s Appisode for review purposes.

It seems like if we’re not at the doctor’s for a well-check, blood work, sick visit you name it, I’m on medical websites checking out what symptoms are or home remedies for small issues, and the girls are watching or pretending to play Disney Junior’s Doc McStuffins.

Needless to say doctors are a big hit in our household. I even wanted to be a pediatrician when I was growing up. – random comment of the day.

I figured since medicine is on our brain I’d feature some of my favorite smartphone apps on that topic.

WebMD Mobile AppThe obvious choice for my first app, for a mom’s go-to when her family is ailing is of course the WebMD Mobile App. I love that I can not only read articles on whatever I’m searching for, but check out lots of helpful information for my specific area, {how cool is that?!?!}, WebMD shows me the health forecast, pollen counts, UV ray harshness and more. As a mom who’s trying to stay ahead of the game, this is a must-download in my book. Head HERE to read more details and if you want download on your smartphone.

For the kiddos, who, as I mentioned LOVE Doc McStuffins, Disney Junior has come out with an interactive episode, better known as an appisode, where your kiddos can watch a real Doc McStuffins episode and play along.

The Disney Junior Doc McStuffins app features activities to help rescue Ronda the helicopter, and save Boppy from deflating. With each of the mini-episodes there are several opportunities for your child to “help” their favorite characters and learn how to care for others as well.

Doc McStuffins Appisode

We like this app because it shows real episodes that my girls have seen on Disney Junior, and also that it’s not too difficult for my 3 year-old, and not too easy for my 6 year-old. The Disney Junior Appisode app for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch is free and the Doc McStuffins App is available for $4.99 and you can see details or download HERE. (Also check out these other Disney Junior Appisodes)

Our family pharmacy go-to is CVS/pharmacy. I love their mobile app because it has some pretty helpful features that include: the option to scan our prescription refills, a drug interaction checker to make sure we aren’t in danger when it comes to taking several medications {prescription and over the counter OTC}, a pill identifier, prescription history which is great for remembering what my family has taken when doctors or medical staff need that information, and lots and lots more, seriously, this app does so many great things and saves me time not having to call my doctor’s office or wait to speak with a pharmacist.

CVS:pharmacy Mobile App

For more details on the CVS/pharmacy app head HERE.

So those are a few of my favorite medical related apps, how about you? Do you like them too? Any that aren’t in this post that you want to share with us??

Track your Healthy Lifestyle with LifeTrak Move C300

I received a LifeTrak Move C300 in order to test out the product and give my honest feedback on it’s use.

Since I’m working on being healthier and living a more active lifestyle I’m always getting questions about programs I’m on and also a lot of people asking if I use a calorie/activity tracker. I’ve used another brand in the past, but recently heard about the LifeTrak Move C300.

This wrist watch-based device tracks several aspects of your day. On it’s own it tracks your steps, and distance you walked/ran that day, it calculates your calories burned (using technology to count “true” steps and calories), and heart rate as well. With some user interaction it can also track your sleep, caffeine intake, caloric intake and more.

C300 Quick Features

This health tracker device stands out, apart from others, for a few reasons:

It’s waterproof – fully submersible to 30 meters – great for swimming and you don’t have to remove it for a shower.

The device shows you some of your stats on the screen (some devices show nothing on their own screen) so you know your progress for the day without having to go to the app.

The device can show you 7 day and hourly activity so you can compare your progress and see how you are doing for the week.

You don’t have to charge the device, so no missed calories burned. Often times with other devices you have to plug into your USB or a AC outlet.

It has interchangeable bands with lots of colors. The devices I have come across usually only have one band, no choices.

It’s one of the lower priced activity trackers on the market.

LifeTrak Move C300 Review Collage

One small reason I didn’t love this device was because I couldn’t hide it under my clothes. It is a little bulky for me since I’m not used to wearing even a regular watch, but overall I really did like the features and price point especially. In my opinion this is a great fit for people who are beginning or in their health journey wanting to keep track of goals and see their progress. For me seeing that progress and then watching it reflected on how I feel, the number on the scale, and how my clothes are fitting is awesome.

The Move C300 retails for $59.99 and you can get yours HERE.

Head to LifeTrakUSA.com to learn more about the Move C300 or check out their other products.

Have you ever used a health tracker? If not why not?

Medifast Chewy Bar Review and Weight Loss Progress

Hey readers! I know I haven’t had a Medifast update in a while, I figured I would concentrate on monthly weight ins since my weight recently {with vacations and summer events} has been up and down but pretty steady at 147.

I do have some great news however, and that is not one, but two NEW Medifast products! I received the Medifast Cookie Dough Chewy Bar and the Medifast Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Chewy Bar. In the packaging the bars looked very tasty and the flavors sounded delicious, right?!?!

Medifast Chewy Bar Review MommyB

Overall I liked the idea of a chewy bar since the other bars that Medifast offers (with the exception of the maintenance bars) are more “crispy” and more like granola bars, so it was a great change from what I’ve been munching on. I was super excited to try them out and they both satisfied any sweet tooth I had for sure.

Both bars are indeed chewy, I’ve talked to some people who prefer the bars chilled for texture purposes. I do agree somewhat, the bars are very chewy, so small bites are best, but I didn’t mind it. This however is not a good option if you’re munching in between talking to someone {think peanut butter on the roof of your mouth.}

I also love that they are “Naturally Flavored”.

Now my thoughts on each separately.

Medifast Cookie Dough Chewy Bar – This bar definitely tastes like cookie dough, I personally would have preferred the milk chocolate drizzle on this instead of the white drizzle. Overall a good bar, a little on the sweeter side for me though.

Medifast Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Chewy Bar – I really liked the balance of peanut butter to chocolate in this bar and the chips gave it some additional texture. This is one of my favorite bars in the bunch.
