My Medifast Progress – Week 5

As I hopped on the scale this morning, I already knew I was going to have a gain, I knew I would have to be admitting to you all of my defeat this week, I just didn’t know how much I was actually going to gain since I hadn’t stepped on it but once the entire week.

MH900422266

Let’s rewind a little. At the end of last week, weigh in day actually, I felt a tightness in my chest…the dreaded flu decided to take over. The entire weekend I was out of commission, I slept a lot, but was mostly just miserable. Luckily, DaddyB doesn’t usually work on the weekends so he played with, fed, took care of the kids while I tried to recover. I started feeling much better on Tuesday, but I’m still not 100% here, I’m coughing every 10 seconds or so, and everything’s all congested up in here!

Needless to say my body needed food. If you’ve ever heard the old saying, “starve a fever, feed a cold”, and even though my throat hurt I knew my body wanted calories, and while I ate lots of great, homemade meals they weren’t on plan but I wasn’t eating a lot of junk or fast foods either. So I guess I succeeded in some ways, since at some point, I won’t be on the Medifast 5 and 1 plan, it’s all training for a healthier me right?!?!

So here are this week’s photos and results…and oh yeah, I forgot to tell you, when I stepped on the scale I literally said, out loud, “what??!?” because I didn’t actually gain any weight. I didn’t even stay the same. Surprisingly, by some sort of miracle, maybe all the coughing burned lots of calories…..I LOST weight… yep, seriously. I’ll let you read how much I actually lost, but was baffled, and am blaming it on the flu and no I didn’t have any stomach sickness either.

Thanks for checking in!!!

My Medifast Progress – Week 4

Happy New Year! This week was a hard one for me, still trying to get back into the groove of being at home and also in a little bit of a funk, still grieving from my Father-in-Law’s passing. I am thankful that for the most part each day gets easier, but of course in my years food has come to be a comfort for me, so I’m trying to find other outlets, and to be completely upfront with you, I was not 100% on plan, but also I didn’t gorge myself. I have also been wanting to get started with exercise as this weight comes off, but this week was a bust with a sick little one and now that I’m getting sick we’ll see how this next week goes. I’m going to take some Emergen-C in hopes to stave it off, send prayers!! So that’s pretty much my week, getting back to work and life, but I do want to share one more thing with you before I give my results.

The Medifast App:

Medifast App Collage MommyBKnowsBest

I’m glad that there’s a mobile app since I’m not able to log into the computer as regularly and easily as I can my phone. While I must admit there is much to be desired it’s a great starting point for those of us who want, {or need} to journal our progress and meals. I’d love for the Progress Report to show pounds including point values, like 10.5, when you’re losing weight you want every single ounce to count. The app is available through itunes or Google Play and my favorite feature is the, “Quick Add”, with the touch of my screen I can add my meals, water, etc and still keep track even in the middle of a busy day. I’ll update you on any changes I see to the app and how it’s helping as the improvements come. But for now…..

My Medifast Progress – Week 3

Medifast Foods

Hello sweet readers! This week was a very hard week for me. The fact that it’s the holidays and dieting don’t really go hand-in-hand, but I had planned to stay “on plan” this week, with maybe a few small treats if that. Unfortunately, life had other plans. As those of you who follow me on Facebook may know, my Father-in-Law passed away unexpectedly two days before Christmas. Thanks to my amazing family, friends, readers, and mostly my faith I have been able to grieve the loss of a great man and know that he’s in a better place.

That being said, I wanted to share because in all of our journey’s and lives there are unexpected tragedies, crazy days, and times that are uncomfortable and challenging for us. I want you to remember that it’s okay if you mess up, and it’s okay to not be hard on yourself, but it’s not okay to forget you. Even in the roughest times we need to make sure we’re taking care of ourselves, whether it’s baby steps like taking a shower, or putting on make up, or making sure we eat healthy or “on plan” or exercising. Grieving doesn’t mean we forget who we are or what our goals are, it just means that it’s okay to not be perfect and we can pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and get ready for a brand new day. Make your life mean something, for your loved ones, and for you!

Stepping off my soapbox this week, I’m not posting a photo of my self this week, but will resume next week. The great news is that I am seeing the results in the way my clothes are fitting. Even though this week was a rough one for me and yes I ate off plan, I skipped meals, I didn’t drink much water, {all the things you are NOT supposed to do in a typical week}, I still lost, and am back on plan as of today, because I matter and need to be healthy for myself and my family too.

Medifast Foods

Here are my results this week:

Beginning Weight: 168.5 lbs {I actually said it, and whoa!! I hadn’t weighed myself in a few weeks, definitely up from where I was}
Weight Lost This Week: -1 lbs {starting this week at 160 lbs}
Weight Lost Total: -9.5 lbs
Current weight: 159 lbs
My First Goal: -33 lbs/135.5 lbs {since I’m 33, I thought that was appropriate}
My Final Goal: -16.5 lbs/119 lbs {half of 33}

Foods I’ve tried so far:
Medifast Vanilla/Mocha/Dutch Chocolate(ready to-go) – {LOVE THESE}
Medifast Cheese Pizza Bites {I may have to get used to these}
Medifast Carmel Nut Bar {I really like these, although I can only have 1 a day on my current plan.}
Medifast Mac & Cheese {this new meal is a little bland but with some pepper not bad}
Medifast S’mores Bars {these taste “buttery” to me, in a good way}
Medifast Chocolate Crunch Bars {I like these}
Medifast Sloppy Joe {reminds me of chinese food, not sure about the aftertaste or texture though}
Medifast Peanut Butter Soft Serve {smells delicious, love the texture but not the taste}
Medifast Cereal Crunch Cinnamon & Brown Sugar {me no likey}
Medifast BBQ Bites {surprisingly I really like these, they remind me of Hot Fries}
Medifast Brownie {not bad, not super flavorful and a little vitamin-y}
Medifast Chocolate Chip Pancakes {the chocolate chips helped but I didn’t like the texture}
Medifast Cinnamon Pretzel Sticks {didn’t love the texture but drank with a lot of water and it was edible}
Medifast Calorie Burn Strawberry Lemonade Flavor Infuser: {Yummy!! I’m not a fan of green tea or juices really but this is great, and helps me get my water in too!!}
Medifast Cappuccino: {Not bad, I really enjoyed this and it was filling}

Energy: Feeling like I gained some of my energy back but had a few early nights due to our week’s events.
Pant size: 12ish

Bob Harper’s Smart Success Suppliments

Bob Harper's Smart Success Supplements

For those of you parents looking to give your weight loss program a “kick-in-the-pants” you may want to check these new supplements out. One of America’s favorite celebrity trainers, Bob Harper recently came up with the Smart Success program.

Bob Harper's Smart Success Supplements

This program includes Bob Harper’s Smart Weight Loss Starter Kit, Bob Harper’s Smart Weight Loss, Bob Harper’s Multivitamin and Bob Harper’s Smart 7-Day Cleanse.

Bob Harper’s Smart Success has a Smart Weight Loss Starter Kit that includes includes a DVD of Bob offering diet and motivational tips and a 30-minute smart workout and daytime formula, which contains naturally sourced caffeine to provide increased energy during the day, and oh-so-smartly, an evening formula, which is caffeine-free. {So you have energy when you need it!}

Bob Harper's Tips

He also has a Smart 7-Day Cleanse which is meant to gently flush the system of digestive waste before you begin the program. Bob Harper’s Weight Loss Formula includes key weight-loss ingredients that have been clinically proven in two gold-standard clinical studies.

One thing you may be interested in is that the supplements are vegetarian friendly, dairy-free and gluten-free, and are encased in veggie-caps. For those of you who have specific dietary requirements.

I received Bob Harper’s Smart Success products in order to give my honest opinion. Your opinions may vary.
I liked these products in general, especially the multivitamin because it was gentle on my stomach and gave me no excuses not to take it {other than occasional forgetfulness.} For me, the cleanse was pretty much like any other cleanse I’ve done, for me it doesn’t really do much by way of weight loss but I did feel like it was getting bad stuff out {which could have been more mental than anything.}

Busy Mom’s Guide: A Healthier You – BodyMedia Fit

BodyMedia Fit Link Armband

BodyMedia FitWeight, and fitness, let’s talk about it.

– How are your New Year’s Resolutions going?

Did you give up unhealthy foods for Lent?

Are you working on your whole self, health included?

No matter what the reason for making health a bigger priority in your life, the outcome will always be a good one, if done the right way. Let’s admit, there are tons of different ways to lose weight these days, but a good percentage of them are not healthy and often don’t keep the weight off either.

In these times when moms are getting busier and busier each day, taking on new projects, some working outside the home, some working from home, some homeschooling and trying to be “super-mom” it’s even harder to focus on ourselves. Don’t you agree?

Personally, I have struggled with my own weight battle since I was in the 4th grade. As I’ve grown older I’ve done my research, bought and read several magazines, articles, cookbooks, joined a weight loss program and been involved in “mommy-and-me” type workout classes. I KNOW what it takes to be a healthy, fit person, but my foundation and food issues from my childhood through early adulthood continue to take over.

I am the type of person who will always need to monitor my calorie intake, that’s just the way it is. And since having Baby C and working even more these past two years I’ve found that it’s even harder for me to do that. I found BodyMedia online after searching for a product that would help me count my calories. Not only did I find something to meet my needs in their FIT system, but other tools to help me accomplish my fitness goals.

BodyMedia Fit Link

I received the BodyMedia Fit LINK Armband to review and love the amazing features included.

[crosslist]

  • Easy to wear – The adjustable arm band is comfortable and with only a little pulling here and there I barely even noticed I was wearing it.
  • All-In-One – The BodyMedia Fit Armband monitors how many calories you’ve burned, how much quality sleep you receive, and based on your calorie intake (which you personally enter in), your calorie deficit.
  • Technology Savvy – With the LINK armband only, you are able to connect the armband measurements to the BodyMedia App to check your progress throughout the day as well as add your meals to keep track as you are on the go.

[/crosslist]

Here’s the easily accesible Online Activity Manager, which you can use with any of the Fit armbands. It’s a more detailed version of the Mobile App, you can track your “Personal Bests” in each category, set goals, track your weight and more.

BodyMedia Fit online+activity+manager

Here is a screenshot from my phone for the mobile app for the LINK armband, the left hand side is the interface that shows you all of your calorie levels, including how many calories you’ve burned through different levels of activity, and quality hours of sleep. On the right hand side you’ll see an example of one of the food search pages in the app. You can easily type in the name of your food, and be taken to a listing of several meals and foods, how easy is that?!?

BodyMedia Fit App

With the BodyMedia Fit, I’m able to keep track of what I’m putting in my body and how active I am. It’s a GREAT reminder of how unhealthy I’ve been, especially when I see so few hours of sleep. Of course with any program it will only work if you are committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and put in work. There are no EASY ways to lose weight the healthy way, only great tools like BodyMedia Fit to help keep you motivated, see results, and make tracking it all a little easier. Definitely a huge plus for busy moms like us.

What’s your experience {if any} with BodyMedia Fit? What tips do you have to stay healthy and run a busy lifestyle?

Check out the BodyMedia Fit system, armbands, and accessories on their website here: http://www.bodymedia.com/

Visit them on Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/BodyMediaFIT to see transformation and ask questions and check them out on Twitter: https://twitter.com/bodymediafit

I received the BodyMedia Fit LINK armband and a complimentary monitoring services in order to give my honest opinion about their products and services. All opinions expressed above are my own, however yours may vary.

SparkPeople – 28 Day Boot Camp DVD {Guest Review}

SparkPeople 28 Day Boot Camp

SparkPeople 28 Day Boot CampWe’re several weeks into the New Year – have you stuck with your resolution to exercise?

I’ll admit, I haven’t been consistent, but I’m making more of an effort. With a 6 month old and a 2 ½ year old, it’s not always easy to get to the gym.

Workout DVDs are a great option for home and the shorter they are with an effective total body workout, the better.

Thanks to Mommy B, I had the opportunity to try 28 Day Boot Camp with SparkPeople’s Coach Nicole.

SparkPeople.com is a free online resource that allows you to plan meals and track nutrition, find recipes, watch exercise videos, and much more. Coach Nicole, a certified personal trainer and exercise instructor, is an editor and fitness expert at SparkPeople.com.

Coach Nicole has a calm, straight forward approach to cueing you for each move and motivating you to stick with it. I know from personal experience that’s how she really is – I took some spinning classes that she instructed.

What I like most about Coach Nicole and the two ladies who are in the 28 Day Boot Camp video is that they are real. They look fit and healthy and you can relate more easily to them than the super fit, extremely thin women that often appear in exercise DVDs.

The DVD includes Coach Nicole’s 28 Day Plan which outlines how many minutes and the intensity in which you should work out along with the type of exercise (cardio, cardio-sculpt, tone and burn, and total body challenge). You simply go to the calendar and the appropriate day and play the workout from the calendar.

Or you can mix and match the workouts how you like. The DVD is set up so you can choose each of the segments individually for a 12-, 20- or 30-minute workout as well as a warm up and cool down. Check out a few clips from the SparkPeople – 28 Day Boot Camp video:

28 Day Boot Camp is one that can work for anyone. Coach Nicole and the two trainers in the video show you the moves at three different levels – beginner, intermediate and advanced. You can modify the moves to continue challenging yourself as you become more fit (or to make yourself work harder if you’re already in great shape). The only equipment needed are hand weights and a mat.

The background music is almost monotonous and doesn’t interfere with your ability to follow the DVD. I almost wish it was a bit more energetic to encourage me to keep moving. Also, there’s a clock on each segment that tells you how much time you have left. I have a love/hate relationship with counters like that – it’s nice to know how much longer you have but it can also be distracting.

Most of the moves seem fairly uncomplicated and include the usual suspects – squats, crunches, side steps, kettle-inspired moves, etc. Be careful not to overexert yourself though – there is one move that involves positioning your legs to the side and turning into the move. That particular move caused me to aggravate my lower back which resulted in pain for several days (disclaimer – I tend to have lower back pain issues that flare up here and there). Just listen to your body and choose the appropriate effort level.

Also included with the DVD are eight recipes (baked lemon rice, blueberry flaxseed muffins, and miso vegetable soup among others), tips to burn more fat and seated ab exercises (you can sneak a little exercise in while you’re working or watching TV).

Overall, I enjoyed the video and plan to include it in my rotation of home exercise DVDs. It’s a little lighter on cardio than some other videos I’ve tried, such as Jillian Michaels, but it has a great combination of cardio and sculpting moves. It also seemed that the instructors “rushed” through some of the moves and I found it difficult to keep up with their pace at times.

Regardless of which workout I selected, I found myself lightly sweating and experiencing that little bit of muscle soreness the next day that lets you know you worked hard, but didn’t overexert yourself.

You can find 28 Day Boot Camp ($16.99 list price) at Target and other retailers as well as Amazon. Visit SparkPeople.com here: http://www.sparkpeople.com to get a $3 coupon to purchase the DVD at Target.

Aurorae Yoga Mat {Guest Post}

I’ve been doing yoga at home for years now as a way to unplug, relax, and stretch out my perpetually tight back. Recently I’ve been stepping up my game, trying to really perfect poses and increase my flexibility.

Thanks to MommyB, I also got a chance to step up my yoga mat. I’d been using the same one day after day for who knows how long, and I didn’t realize how worn out it had become until I unfurled my new Northern Lights mat from Aurorae Yoga.

Aurorae Yoga Mat

Measuring 72″ long x 24″ wide, the Aurorae mat is about four inches longer than a standard mat, which doesn’t seem like much but makes a difference: I’m no longer having to hop back throughout a DVD or class so that my hands stay on the mat. Similarly, the 5 mm thickness seems incrementally cushier than normal mats but the difference is undeniable. My knees, creaky old things that don’t like repeated contact with cold floors, no longer scream after a session. And where I was once uncomfortably aware of my sit-bones and the base of my neck during the relaxation phase at the end of a session, I’m now supported and comfortable, and able to actually let go.

The mat’s thickness and grip make it much easier to really dig in your fingers and toes to support your weight, and slipping is minimal.

So strictly based on performance, we have a winner in the Aurorae mat… but wait! There’s more! The Northern Lights model also scores big points for aesthetics and eco-friendliness.

Mimicking the serenely undulating dance of the aurora borealis (but also echoing the recent ombre craze that’s been happening, at least in my mind), the Northern Lights mats come in five richly toned colors and no two mats are exactly the same. The colors are identified with certain characteristics, so that you can choose a mat that signifies the qualities you want to evoke/boost with your workout. The top of the mat is strategically emblazoned with Aurorae’s logo to create a point of focus, to aid with balance (brilliant). And in spite of its extra length and thickness, it easily rolls tight and is not noticeably heavier than my old mat.

Aurorae mats are made from PER Eco Safe material, and are biodegradable and phthalate-free. There was none of that wretched plastic off-gassing odor when I opened the package. I still flipped it over the clothesline to let it relax and air out, but I didn’t feel like I had to, to avoid breathing in chemicals.

Basically, I’ve learned that a good mat is essential to really getting the most from your yoga workout, and post-workout relaxation poses. I feel like I can perform the poses better and hold them longer without straining or slipping. The fact that the mats are eco-conscious, pretty, affordable and from a company that appears to really appreciate its customers? Incredibly awesome and totally welcome bonuses.

Aurorae Yoga

Aurorae Yoga supplies are sold through Amazon and ship for free when spending more than $25. Add it to your wish list today!

Disclosure: I received an Aurorae yoga mat to review; no other compensation was received. This mat was put through the paces of many hours of Rodney Yee DVDs and YMCA yoga sessions; therefore all thoughts and opinions are thorough, honest, and entirely my own.

FocusForward Spotlight and Giveaway {CLOSED}

Focus Forward LogoI have recently become acquainted with Just Focus Massage and Wellness, a Charlotte area wellness center who is offering a seminar called, FocusForward. Sounds pretty cool right? Let me tell you a little more about them and what they are doing with their FocusForward program.

Basically, FocusForward is a six-week seminar focused on wellness geared towards women. “At the foundation of FocusForward are the seven primary elements of wellness.” With the guidance of wellness experts each interactive session focuses not only on the physical aspect of wellness but your mental wellness. Their goal is to challenge you and recreate your way of thinking about health and wellness and empowering you to be able to make the changes to have a happy, healthy, successful life. I think that’s pretty great.

I always think about the changes I make each year, goals towards being a better me and think about the world around me. Often times we see people on The Biggest Loser or other television shows losing massive amounts of weight and it seems like it wasn’t until just recently that some weight loss centers, shows, and programs, (not even all are on this level yet) are finally realizing that being healthy is more than focusing on nutrition and exercise, it’s a mental process as well.
