Growing up I knew about severe allergies and anaphylaxis right away, although I only suffered from environmental allergies and a mild egg intolerance or “pseudoallergy”, my mother and brother both had severe allergies to medicine and bee-stings and both had injectible medications in case of an emergency.

Another experience with severe allergies was when I nannied for a great family. Their sweet boy dealt with eczema, a mild milk allergy and a severe peanut allergy, life threatening in fact. While I nannied for the family, I was taught how to very careful to check labels, keeping especially anything made from peanuts, or made with machinery or in a factory that may have nut particles, out of reach and mostly out of the home in general.

Finally, after those experiences, not realizing or knowing that I was at risk, I experienced anaphylaxis first hand.

I went to a Japanese hibachi restaurant for the first time to celebrate a special occasion with some friends. All was going well, but as I continued to eat our first courses I started to feel a little warm and a lot “off”. Internally, I started to panic as I felt my mouth begin to tingle and itch and my throat followed suit. I though to myself, “maybe you are just overreacting.” I didn’t want to say anything or spoil the night, but I feared that if I didn’t there might be an emergency at foot.

I explained my situation to friends, who, one of which was by the Grace of God a volunteer EMT. We immediately left the restaurant to sit on the curb and he raced over to a nearby pharmacy only to bring back, and make me chug a bottle of over-the-counter allergy medicine. Luckily, after a few minutes I was feeling better, my throat stopped itching, but I was left pretty shaken up as I had never expected to have a severe reaction to food.

We tried to figure out what all I had eaten and concluded (without testing) that it was probably the ginger in the soup since that was the only food item I couldn’t remember eating before in my life.

I know you’ll probably be surprised when I tell you that was not my last visit to a Japanese hiachi grill, but since we thought I could just skip the soup, we figured it was safe. Little did we know that I would have another severe reaction, causing beginning stages of anaphylaxis requiring more over-the-counter allergy medicine.

After the reaction (my husband and I semi-discretely took care of the situation at hand), we thought we could go sit and celebrate our friend’s birthday, but I couldn’t even sit at the table or restaurant due to the vapors in the air. To this day I am still trying to determine whether I am allergic to the shrimp that I ate (I rarely eat seafood, but have a small reaction when cleaning it to cook for my husband) or the safflower oil they used at the hibachi grill, but I am sure to steer clear of both.

Other than that HUGE, almost life-changing experience I recognize how important it is to teach and learn about severe allergies and anaphylaxis. We have several friends who’s children suffer from severe food allergies, and our own daughters have environmental allergies, not to mention that we recently had an allergy blood test performed on Lil’ C that came back very borderline for peanut/milk allergy (which she has food aversions to anyway) and we know that certain bug bites/stings are severe reactions for Miss A, swelling to the size of baseballs or bigger and have medicine for her reactions.

In my humble opinion, if you aren’t familiar with the causes, symptoms, likelihood, treatment of severe allergies and anaphylaxis you need to be, ESPECIALLY as a parent or caregiver.

Recently, I was able to submit some questions to football legend Jerome Bettis, aka The Bus, who lives with a severe allergy that puts him at risk for anaphylaxis. Joining forces with Auvi-Q™, he has created, The Severe Allergy & Anaphylaxis Playbook – a guide of valuable “plays” or tips to help people living with severe allergies, and their caregivers, avoid allergens and plan effectively in case of an emergency.

Check out this video for his answers to my questions, our experiences sound somewhat similar:

Hello strangers! What a whirlwind couple of weeks this has been! Here’s what’s been going on the past two weeks:

Some of you know I founded and run a local parenting website. Last week we posted our last new article as we felt led to work on other things.

Along with that change there has been another great change in our homes that has consumed a lot of time and has been very draining physically and mentally. I can’t mention the change quite yet but I’ll be sure to keep you posted once things are finalized.

Right now I am sitting at the Honda repair shop since my Odyssey decided to start leaking (pretty sure it’s just a clogged ac drain, no biggie).

And the end of school is near so there are lots of activities and parties and whatnot, exciting but hectic.

Plus, in just over a week I’ll be celebrating Miss A turning 6 years old and partying with her very own Lego Friends theme! I can’t believe it!!!

Busy busy busy!

I’ve been trying to stay on plan and of course other than running errands and cleaning the house have not had time for “real” exercise.

I’ll admit I’ve missed meals completely, eaten some foods that weren’t on plan and as usual struggled with getting enough water to drink and proper amounts of sleep.

One other thing I have noticed is that even though I love my Diet Coke I do feel more bloated than when I drink water. I need to remember too that the Medifast Essential1 CalorieBurn Infusers are great for energy AND hydration. They really do give me the boost that I used to get with my coffee especially on extra busy or sleepy days.

Unfortunately, in our craziness, my hand-me-down DSLR camera also decided it was time to go to camera heaven. I wanted to post more pictures of my progress this week, but it’ll have to wait until I get a new camera, sorry!!!

In the meantime here are some pictures of my progress in a before and during collage:

Buy one here: www.PlusMotif.com

For the healthy mom:

I love Edible Arrangements fresh selection of quality fruits. Their Mother’s Day products come in beautiful, reusable vases, and you can also add a stuffed animal or balloons as well. This gift is great because it can be delivered right to her door and she won’t have to worry about how she’s going to work off those extra calories!!!

Edible Arrangements for mom start at $29 and you can pick the bouquet of fruit that she likes best. Take a look at the wide selection here: Edible Arrangements Gifts for Mom

For the earth conscious mom:

We all have one, two, or one hundred of the plastic reusable totes, but be you be true cotton bags are adorable, washable, and inspirational. For an additional fee you can personalize the tote and add mom’s name. Best of all you can fill with a few of mom’s favorite things, like a book, bath products, her favorite candies, what a nice way to spoil her.

This tote without personalization is $28. Check out more totes and other be you be true products here: beyoubetrue.com

For the mom who loves to read:

We all need a little humor in our lives. Lost in Suburbia: A Momoir: How I Got Pregnant, Lost Myself, and Got My Cool Back in the New Jersey Suburbs by Tracy Beckerman is all about the many things in motherhood that make us laugh. Any mom is sure to relate to Tracy’s stories of kids mistaking adults for being pregnant, fishing toys out of the toilet and more!

Find Tracy’s book on Amazon.com

For the mom who wants to smile:

I know Invisalign isn’t an obvious Mother’s Day gift, however the more I chat with mom friends, other moms at my daughter’s school, and people in playgroups I hear mom’s wishing they could “fix” their smile. Some moms had braces as a child but didn’t wear their retainer, some of their families couldn’t afford braces when they were little, and some have seen overcrowding issues as they get older.

As a mom, often times we put our own health and appearance on the back burner to care for our children. If you know a mom who would be interested in making her smile shine as bright as her personality, consider arranging a consultation to see if she’s a good fit for the Invisalign treatment program.

Invisalign pricing ranges depending on the case. Average treatment is around $3,000-$5,000 but is often less depending on length of treatment. Find a doctor here: Invisalign Doctor Locator

For the mom who wants to give back:

Prosperity Candles are beautiful handmade candles manufactured by female entrepreneurs in and from distressed regions of the globe. My favorite Mother’s Day gift is the Gem of a Woman gift set that comes with a uniquely scalloped bowl soy candle and a fair trade summer scarf, both made by underprivileged women from around the globe.

Each set comes with a gift box and story card, and burns for 40 hours. There are three scents to choose from: Himalayan Bamboo, Magnolia Blossom, and Sea Mist. Each candle/scarf set retails for $54.00 Purchase yours here: Gem of a Woman gift set.

There you have it, a few great ideas for Mother’s Day gifts. Now what will you get your mom for her special day??

This is a compilation of products that I have received for review, and products that I have not personally tried out but think are a great idea for Mother’s Day. In any regard I chose these specific gifts on my own as Mother’s Day gifts that I thought would be a good fit for shoppers. Any opinions in this post are my own, honest words written with integrity.

Hooray for a great week. I don’t want to say it yet, but I may be back on track. This week I got a few workouts in, {hooray for that motivation} I stayed on plan, {minus a handful of my daughter’s goldfish crackers} and was inspired both on instagram, and by people who are doing the program themselves {you know who you are, and THANK YOU!!!}

I tried a few new Medifast foods, make sure you check my page for Medifast Food Reviews to see those. I had lean and green meals like lean turkey and broccoli, salad and grilled chicken, snacked on kale chips {yep that’s right}, and even made this delicious cauliflower pizza that is perfect for Medifasters!

So here’s to another week, closer to my first goal of 33lbs for my #journey33 and also my incentive goal, which I posted about here in my Week 18 and Week 19 recap, so let’s see how close I am to both of those goals as of this week, shall we?!?!

Even though I don’t have anything to really update in here I figured I should give you all a shout. Yes, that’s right, I’m holding at 150 (so I guess I’ve lost .5lbs) but I’m not going anywhere. Not for the lack of a good program, because Medifast works, it helped me lose 19lbs already, but I am the one that is broken.

My willpower is almost non-existant, actually I can’t say that because if that were true I wouldn’t be on the program at all, so I guess I do have some willpower when I stay on-plan. But there are true moments of weakness, when I fail the plan and eat whatever I please.

Two weeks ago, I had a couple of amazing workouts and thought to myself, “I am so on track”, yet I continued to eat in an unhealthy way. I decided that I am going to set up some short-term goals for myself as I really don’t have any accountability other than writing my progress here. I think too, it would help me personally, to have someone to “do this with”. Someone who I could be inspired by, commiserate with during the hard times, and hopefully encourage as well. But because I don’t have that I need to be encouraged by the way my clothes are fitting, and how I’m feeling, but also by incentives. Hopefully this will kick start me into the right direction again.

Here’s my first incentive oriented goal:

I truly am not ready to give up yet, but my battle is with my mind. Do you ever feel that way?? Just when I thought things were getting easier, my mind convinced me that I could have 1,2,3,4 and so on, bites of {fill in the junk food here}. I’m not accepting failure, I know I haven’t been the perfect image of health, but I know that I have been 100% real with you all, and I hope that you can appreciate that if nothing else.

I know I’m not the only one who struggles with weight, diet, and exercise, it’s evident in our world. My work will be not only to lose this weight, but to train my brain to stop thinking about “cheating” and start thinking what’s important for my body and how I want to be a healthier person in my 33rd year of life.

Sorry for the military faces, I dunno what’s going on here *LOL*

So here are my stats for the past two weeks, expect these to change at the end of this week though

Weight Prior to Medifast: 168.5 lbs Weight
Lost This Week: -0.5 lbs
Weight Lost on Medifast: -19 lbs

Are you one of the people who think that Invisalign is only for straightening teeth. I’ve even heard people say, “Yeah, Invisalign can fix crooked teeth, but not really crooked teeth right??” And to that I say, “wrong and wrong”.

When I went to Invisalign Headquarters last year I learned so much about the technology of the Invisalign program and products that even some of my own misconceptions were dispelled.

I thought to myself, “sure I have a few crooked teeth and thought Invisalign would be great to correct those issues of my overcrowding as I get older”, but little did I know Invisalign works in many other ways, and I’m living proof.

Did you know that Invisalign works for correcting:

Overbite

Underbite

Crossbite

Overcrowding

Openbite

Spacing Issues

General Straightening

Again, for me, I knew I had a few crooked teeth that could use some adjusting, but I didn’t realize my smile wasn’t as full as it could have been, and is now becoming due to my use of the Invisalign system. In my progress picture you can see the difference where my back teeth are starting to fill up my smile rather than there being a sinking space. Totally cool right?!?!

I encourage you to take a look in the mirror and consider if you want a healthier smile (straight teeth have health benefits too!!). If you think you may be a good candidate or want to improve your smile, take Invisalign’s free smile assessment: HERE.

This is the time of year when things get a little hectic in our schedules. Lil’ C celebrated her birthday last weekend, we celebrated Easter, and we had family in town, so some fun and entertaining. Unfortunately this was not a good week to stay on plan with cupcakes and other birthday treats, Easter dinner and dessert, and of course eating out with the family and our visitors.

Surprisingly though I did not gain any weight this week, and did better than I thought I would staying on plan. Medifast also just revealed a few new product additions. The first of course is their NEW Tomato Basil Bisque, I love basil so I was super excited to try this out.

I love that the Tomato Basil Bisque has sundried tomatoes and basil in it and is easy to make. The bisque has an okay taste, but something I’ll have to get used to as it’s not as creamy as the non-Medifast versions. I’m a flavor-full kind of gal so this doesn’t knock me out with flavor but definitely feels light and healthy.

Aside from this new product announcement, Medifast also announced their new Four-Week Variety Packs, which I think is really cool. They have Medifast Favorites, On-the-Go Favorites, Gluten-Free Favorites, and Chocolate Lovers. Each package has 140 meals, that add up to a little over $2.40 per meal. Not too shabby!!!

Here are this week’s stats:

Weight Prior to Medifast: 168.5 lbs Weight
Lost This Week: 0 lbs
Weight Lost on Medifast: -18.5 lbs
Current weight: 150 lbs
My First Goal: -33 lbs/135.5 lbs {since I’m 33, I thought that was appropriate}
My Final Goal: -16.5 lbs/119 lbs {half of 33}

At the end of March, CVS/pharmacy launched their new iPad app making it that much easier for customers to manage prescriptions and shop directly from our tablets, how cool is that?!?!

With the new CVS iPad app we can explore a virtual 3D CVS/pharmacy and quickly access services from the Pharmacy, ExtraCare, Photo Center and MinuteClinic, as well as browse their favorite departments to shop. Not only is this app really cool because it’s interactive, but it’s super easy to use. Plus, you don’t have to get out of your pajamas or do your hair to shop at CVS now, you can perform several typically in-person tasks from the comfort of your own home or even on the go.

Download the free CVS iPad app, and you’ll be instantly transported into what feels like your local CVS/pharmacy. Tapping on popular areas of the store from the home screen will launch mini apps (different parts of the store) including:

Pharmacy Services with Enhanced Prescription Management: With the swipe of a finger, customers can scroll through all their prescriptions in a matter of seconds and take actions including scheduling refills and viewing prescriptions available for pick-up. Caregivers can manage prescriptions for themselves and their families, using native tablet functionality such as drag-and-drop and easily sort by patient name, refill status and more. Patients can also view prescription details instantly with zoom-in detail screens and scan in refills using the iPad camera (supported on iPad 3 and above).

ExtraCare with Coupon Center: Shoppers can sign in to manage their ExtraCare savings and rewards by clicking the ExtraCare Coupon Center. The ExtraCare mini app allows visitors to check their balances or sign up for additional ExtraCare programs such as Beauty Club, ExtraCare Advantage for Diabetes and ExtraCare Pharmacy & Health Rewards. Similar to the in-store experience, customers are encouraged to make the ExtraCare Coupon Center their first stop to receive new coupons and personalized offers. On the CVS iPad app, they can view what offers are available with easy rotating display and animations, and then choose to send them directly to their ExtraCare card or print them.

Weekly Ad: Customers looking for deals or who prefer to plan ahead can view the weekly circular for their preferred location by using the GPS locator or entering their ZIP code. Additionally, customers can search the ad by category or brand, or search for a specific product and build shareable shopping lists.

Catalogue Style Shopping: Users can shop and search the full CVS.com product catalog, sorted by category. Savvy shoppers can also access weekly deals to take advantage of new offers every day on popular household essentials, beauty products, health needs and gifts.

Photo Center: App users can upload photos from their tablet camera roll to be printed for pick-up that very same day at a local CVS/pharmacy. Customers can also see various other photo products available in-store.

MinuteClinic: Users can quickly locate the nearest MinuteClinic or access a variety of informational resources on the types of services and minor illness exams offered, as well as check the various kinds of insurance accepted.

In the coming months, CVS/pharmacy will introduce support for additional tablet platforms and continue to enhance the CVS iPad app, offering additional new features that deepen the virtual shopping experience and offer informative and innovative ways for customers to interact with pharmacy services. For more information, make sure you head over to CVS.com/onthego and check it out for yourself!!

This is not a compensated post, however I have worked with CVS/pharmacy in the past. I stand behind their brand, and my family personally utilizes the services that CVS/pharmacy offers, even before our working relationship, and will continue to do so for many years.

Alrighty folks, you know I’ve been struggling with staying on plan and being motivated. Welp, I am happy to say that this week I have hit the rewind button, and I’ve gone back to week 13.

Although I am beating myself up a little for the slip up, I know that if I am too hard on myself then I will just quit, and I’m not about to quit. I just needed to refocus and get back on track. So here I am, ready to go at it again, and continue on my weight loss progress.

Although with Lil C’s birthday party and Easter Dinner, I did better than I would have off plan, but still not great. My plan is to make better choices for the rest of this week and hopefully get in some exercise too.

I will be attending Mom Prom, a Charlotte charity event, that benefits children with cancer and have a good time with friends and I’d love to look and more importantly feel good in my dress as I dance and enjoy the night, so that’s my closest upcoming goal. Hoping that’s an inspiration for me to be kind to my body.

So, here are my stats for this week, again remember I am doing a rewind, so from Week 13 to now, week 16:

Here are this week’s stats:

Weight Prior to Medifast: 168.5 lbs Weight
Lost This Week: 0 lbs (weight rewind)
Weight Lost on Medifast: -18.5 lbs
Current weight: 150 lbs
My First Goal: -33 lbs/135.5 lbs {since I’m 33, I thought that was appropriate}
My Final Goal: -16.5 lbs/119 lbs {half of 33}

Check out my thoughts on the Medifast Foods I’ve tried so far: http://www.mommybknowsbest.com/medifast-food-reviews/

Energy: More tired this week, staying up later though. Pant size: 8 (short of course)!!!
