Breaking News – CVS/pharmacy Goes Tobacco-Free and Stops Selling Tobacco Products

February 5, 2014 35 Comments »

I can’t say I’m not elated about the HUGE stance CVS/pharmacy is taking by not selling tobacco products starting this Fall. As the daughter of smoking parents, they know how I feel, and while I know it’s a hard habit to break, I love the reasons behind CVS/pharmacy’s big tobacco free decision and look forward to a healthier America and am so glad a great brand is taking a HUGE step in the right direction.

CVS Tobacco Free MommyB

CVS Caremark’s corporate mission is focused on helping put people on a path to better health. This morning, CVS Caremark announced that they will stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products at their more than 7,600 CVS/pharmacy stores by October 1, 2014.

“Now more than ever, pharmacies are on the front lines of health care, becoming more involved in chronic disease management to help patients with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes. All of these conditions are made worse by smoking, which is the leading cause of premature disease and death in the U.S., with more than 480,000 deaths annually. Because of this, this is the right thing for us to do and something we need to do for our customers.

Our decision to stop selling tobacco products is consistent with the positions taken by the American Medical Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, American Lung Association and American Pharmacists Association that have all publicly opposed tobacco sales in retail outlets with pharmacies.”

In addition to removing tobacco products and cigarettes for sale in their stores, this Spring CVS Caremark will be launching a national smoking cessation program with the goal of helping millions of Americans quit smoking.

Big thumbs up for this initiative and who knows maybe other drugstores will follow suit and help the 7 out of 10 smokers that want to stop smoking.

Here’s to a healthier America. Mom & Dad if you’re reading this you know what I’m thinking…….

The opinions and thoughts expressed in this post are my own. I was not compensated in any way by CVS/pharmacy to write about this. Because it is a topic that is personal and lays heavy on my heart I chose to bring this message to you. I work with CVS/pharmacy and believe they are a great brand and have been a customer for years and will continue to be especially if their direction continues to help others get healthy and stay healthy.

well that just plumb makes good sense! not only is it ridiculous for a store dedicated to health and well being to sell cigarettes but i don’t have to wait in line behind all those clamoring for after work smokes lol. it’s a win win

It just makes sense for them to make this move. Hopefully it’s the first step in right direction for all pharmacies.

I think it’s cool that CVS is doing this! As a store that’s supposed to be a ‘healthy’ or ‘get yourself healthy’ kind of place, it really just makes sense!

That is an amazing step. Especially since they are a pharmacy.

My husband was just telling me about this today. Our CVS stores here have been slowly moving that direction for a while now. First putting them behind the counter, then reducing which products were available bit by bit. Good to see they will be closing it out completely. It’s so ironic that you could get your medicine (for health) at the same place you could get your cigarettes!

I’ve heard about this but I have to say I’ve been so confused by it. All of the CVS’s I’ve ever been in don’t sell tobacco products. I guess there are some that do *shrugs*

I thought this was great news when I saw it come through my feed yesterday. I was shocked when I went to the CVS Facebook page and saw how many people were against the move. I think it’s an excellent choice!

I was so excited to hear this news this week! Tobacco products definitely don’t have a place (in my opinion) with a company that is so closely tied to healthcare.

I think it’s awesome that CVS is no longer going to sell tobacco products. I’m an on again-off again smoker of 20 years…I really wish that it was HARDER for me to buy cigarettes, it would make it easier for me to stay quit when I quit. I wish more stores would follow suit with this decision!

That’s fantastic! And LOL to the note to your mom and dad at the bottom.

You go CVS. You have to love a business who stands up for the right thing, no matter how much it will cost them financially. Some things are more important than money.

I heard about them stopping to sell cigarettes. I don’t really have an opinion on the matter, I feel like with anything in this world people will find their product elsewhere if need be so it doesn’t matter if one store or all stores stop selling it. The good is that maybe this will help some quit for sure!

I really applaud them for taking such a bold move. It takes guts and the willingness to forget money/bottomline for the sake of health.

I heard about how much revenue CVS stands to lose because of their decision, and I applaud them even more because of it! They are really showing their stance against tobacco. I like that they will be offering a program to help smokers quit too.

I love this!! I have been thinking about their reasoning, saying they thought it would actually boost sales. I agree, I think it will be great for their company, and our society.
