Action Baby Carrier Guest Review & Giveaway

January 16, 2014 49 Comments »

There are an overwhelming number of baby products on the market. Before I had my first child, I wasn’t sure what I needed and what I (and the baby) could survive without.

I quickly learned many of the “most have items” big baby stores and some well-meaning parents will tell you that you need are not really necessary. But there is one item I wish I had known about sooner than I did – an ergonomic baby carrier.

I’ve used several brands and types of carriers with my children from the time they were infants until now (they are 2 and 4 years old). By far, my favorite has been soft structured carriers (SSC).

My 4-year-old son is not as big of a fan of babywearing as my 2-year-old daughter. She has always loved being worn and she still does. Babywearing has saved my sanity many times, particularly when she was younger as she liked to be held – a lot. By wearing her, I’ve been able to do things I need to do around the house, play with my son, run errands, etc.

There’s a very popular ERGOnomic carrier that has several versions of its SSC (lightweight, organic, etc.) and I’ve owned several of them.

While I love those carriers, as my children get older, taller and heavier, I haven’t found them to be as comfortable for me.

I’m very excited to have found the toddler carrier from Action Baby Carrier, a small, Michigan-based business that hand makes their quality carriers in the U.S.A.

Their toddler carrier is 3 inches taller in the body than their regular carrier (similar in sizing to most SSCs), the hood is an inch longer and the shoulder webbing is 2 inches smaller (because they are used mostly for back carries and this offers a tighter fit).

As children get bigger, the traditional SSCs don’t go as high on their backs or across their bottoms. I noticed a significant difference in how secure my toddlers (I tested it with both of them in it) seemed to feel in Acton Baby’s toddler carrier. The kids enjoy being in the carrier and seem to be more comfortable in the toddler carrier than a standard SSC.

Although the carrier is larger, it’s not bulky or heavy like some soft structured carriers. It’s actually fairly lightweight and it folds up to a very reasonable size.

The buckles on the carrier are strong and sturdy. The waist band is generous and is more likely to fit a plus size wearer without an extension. The body of the carrier is well-made and it comes in solid colors as well as prints. The company recently introduced four new fun prints, including the popular chevron pattern, elephants and classic cars. Their prints are classy, not “loud” and many of them are gender neutral.

Because of the additional sizing on the toddler vs. standard carrier, the weight of my children (30lbs and 39lbs) definitely felt as if it was distributed more evenly, which is very important to me as I have lower back issues.

Action Baby Carrier’s toddler carrier is designed for children 15-45lbs (their standard carrier is for 8-40lbs).

The only real negative for me with the Action Baby Carrier is that the chest strap was not as comfortable as I would like and it dug into my arm pits a bit. However, I’m hopeful that as I get accustomed to using this brand vs. others, I will learn to adjust the straps to a fit that works best for me.

Overall, Action Baby Carrier’s toddler carrier is wonderfully made in the U.S. and is reasonably priced ($114 – their standard carrier is $98). The additional sizing makes it a more comfortable fit for the toddlers and those who wear them, including men (my husband found this toddler carrier to be more comfortable than standard SSCs).

I never wore either of my babies – oddly enough, neither one of them seemed to like being in that position.

I’ve heard great things about the ABC carriers! In fact, theirs is on my list to try, specifically the toddler one because my 23 month old still likes to be worn!

That looks much more comfortable than the Baby Bjorn I had when my daughter was little. I loved wearing her out to places but she always slid down and it was not comfy for either of us.

I always wanted to wear my babies, but never could find a carrier that made me feel comfortable. This carrier looks really comfy. Thank you for sharing it.

I’ve baby carried all of my boys. That carrier looks awesome with the strap that bulks up on the side, rather then right smack in the middle of your back, which I can never reach.

I wore my son for the longest time, but once he started walking, all bets were off. I would love to be able to wear him more in stores (he’s 2) and wonder if he would tolerate this carrier!

it has a great structured look to it even as a soft-sided carrier. I’ve used tons of them and have given many more as gifts. i love how they still improve

When my three kids were little we really fully baby carried. i guess the sling I received was not comfortable, and it put a bad taste in my mouth as far as baby wearing went. Now, I regret not having the option of trying different brands out.

I love babywearing! The Action Baby Carrier sounds great – I especially love that it is a few inches taller than regular carriers to that they are more secure.

I used a Baby K’Tan carrier with both of my sons when they were little bitty, but it’s not great when they get past the infant stage. I love the idea of this toddler carrier made in the US!

I had a Baby Bjorn that someone gave us with my 1st son & didn’t really like it. I got a Boba for my 2nd & we love it. It’d be interesting to see how this 1 compares.
